the friendly toast

i went to the friendly toast in kendall square (cambridge) last week for my co-workers birthday. she is also gluten free and i am so glad she introduced me to this place!! before this, i hadn’t orderedpancakesin a restaurant since 2008! i was really happy seeing that they offer gluten free pancakes. they have all kinds of delectable gluten freepancakes– blueberry, chocolate chip, m&m, toffee crumble, coconut with cashews, chocolate chips and drizzled with coconut sauce (my mouth is drooling just typing that!). i ordered one pancake, and it was huge; it was the size of my plate! it was so fluffy and delicious! i didn’t want to stop eating because it was just that good, but i was so stuffed and i only got ¾ through the entire thing. breakfast is served all day, which means you can havepancakesfor lunch or dinner! most of the egg dishes are gluten free, as are many of the sides; we had homefries. homefries are one of my favorite breakfast items but i did not like the

waited an hour after we orderedpancakesand. a waffle left without eating

dont call it friendly toast call it burnt toast. there is no french in the french toast all it is is burnt cooked bread. thepancakesare great as well as the mojito milkshake.

love the retro decor! the pumpkinpancakeswere very satisfying. next time i would ask for less chocolate chips since this may have taken away the true flavor of the pumpkin.

this place is really neat! my husband had the hash and mexican mash breakfast -- it was awesome! i had the pumpkinpancakes(yuck with no pumpkin flavor) and homefries (yay! delicious). our server was weird, but overall the experience was great.

friendly food at friendly prices. weird and quirky but the friendly toast serves up a great breakfast at a very "friendly" cost. the chocolate chippancakeswere awesome (and huge i might add, you only need to order one!). it was oozing with chocolate chip melty goodness!!! you gotta love dessert for breakfast. as the name suggests, they also make a variety of homemade breads which they cut into super thick slices of toast. from what we tried, you can't go wrong with any of the offerings whether they be sweet or savory!

retro-kitsch fun and food!. i went to brunch at the friendly toast with friends, and enjoyed a rich meal and friendly service. the atmosphere is completely over-the-top retro kitsch, and the food is unapologetically rich. the four of us shared the king pancake, two chocolate chip and bananapancakessmeared with peanut butter, and topped with whipped cream and bacon. i ordered "the bus boy," which had a list of ingredients scrambled into eggs and served with toast. my husband ordered green eggs and ham, which were quite good.

the friendly toast is delicious, generous, and not for those seeking simple food and decor. the food is very good, and the service is friendly and efficient.

yum!. the servings are generous. they have your standardpancakesand waffles, and then they have creative and delicious variations. it is at the top of my list for breakfast-food outings.

reality check - fun - but sloppy and overrated.. i can't give the friendly toast a strong endorsement. i have had one very good meal there, and two subsequent ones that were not so good. decor is the strong point - its an eccentric, fun breakfast/lunch joint. each time i have gone, presentation and cooking have gotten sloppier. bread and eggs are excellent. however, thepancakesare tasteless except for a bitter baking soda aftertaste. my friend'spancakeswere served partially burnt - the waiter seemed unabashed. in fact a lot of the servers seem to be fighting hangovers. the bread and eggs remain good and abundant. but the gingerbread waffles are dry and pretty tasteless despite fancy sauce and whipped cream. watery and bad coffee is a notable weakness. basically good service. not a great value - you will end up paying more than you expected for a sloppily prepared mix of good and not-so-good food, and bad, pricey coffee.
