we headed over to the friendly toast at the crack of dawn (ok, 8am) to try and beat the rush. while we were seated right away, the place filled up by about 8:30am. our server was awesome, really on top of everything. our food came out quickly and he made sure that we had everything we needed. the restaurant is located in kendall square, ingoodcompany with bon me and state park. the decor is kitschy and sure to spark somegoodconversation (think your great aunt suzie’s place). there’s a serious hipster vibe here (don’t forget your skinny jeans).

great breakfast and smoothies!. was looking for the best breakfast place in boston during my visit (had tried the deluxe town diner), and i made an excellent choice! got in with a friend at around 9am on a saturday, the place was half full. we each started off with their fresh fruit smoothies, raspberry and strawberry respectively, which were refreshing and actually had real fruit in them. i ordered the sklarmaggeddon an omelette with fresh walnuts, bacon, sausage, ham and i think mushrooms? served with homefries and your selection of homemade toast - i opted for the special toast of the day, brocolli and cheese. the omelette was loaded with the perfect combination of ingredients - i thought i could finish it but it was too much! homefries were standard, but the toast was really spectacular. you could tell it was fresh from the oven, very soft and chewy. my friend had the costa rican, which appeared to be a version of huevos rancheros, and had eggs with salsa, sour cream, bean and guacamole? also served with homefries and your choice of toast. she opted for the cinnamon raisin. she was also wowed by everything - i usually don't like cinnamon raisin toast, but i tried some of hers and it was reallygoodas well. by the time we were finished (around 10am), the place was packed with a line out the door. i can definitely see why as it's a hidden gem that serves stellar breakfast food. i can see why it won breakfast place of the year. the decor was also super funky like an old school diner that was renovated and the service was also very attentive and friendly. the only downside is that it's hard to find (in the corner of plaza at 1 kendall square). also it doesn't seem to be very wheelchair friendly (i had a large luggage which i had to lift up about 15 stairs as i didn't see a ramp).

still, the toast wasgoodenough that i’d like to go back. and the mojito milkshake on the menu is also sounding like it is worth trying as well.

prettyy good. fun, kitschy decor helps keep you visually stimulated while you wait for a table and/or the food. service isn't bad if you don't mind the hipster vibe that can at times seem a bit (perhaps unintentionally) pretentious. the food is prettyyy good. i guess i'd describe it as chunky or clumsy. the portions are a little too big and bulky, the homemade bread isgoodbut the slices are intrusively thick, the eggs and sauces are all just sort of plopped on top of eachother. it's very.. heavy handed. i guess that's just their style, it's just a little too heavy. i mean it does satisfy a general craving for salty, fatty breakfast foods, but... y'know when you're hung over and you're hungry but the thought of too much food just makes you feel kind of sick? that's sort of how i felt lol. fun place though and brunch is hard to find so i'd go again if i were in the area. just be prepared to wait for a table on the weekends.

yummy & fun. my husband and i visited boston last week and the friendly toast was our last stop before the airport. we got there around 9:15am and had to wait only about 5-10 minutes. there were tables available for large parties, but not us two.

the decor is funny and the staff was generally pleasant (if not the quickest in the world). the menu is very large, but we chose a special for the day, the tijuana benedict. it was really verygoodwith jalapeño toast, two poached eggs, chorizo sausage, and onions/peppers. it was topped generously with hollandaise sauce, which i didn't really care for. the home fries (side) were out of this world! i would definitely order it again, sans hollandaise. the sauce was too much, but the rest was spot on!

when we were leaving (about 10:30am) the line was out the door and the wait was 30+ minutes.

get there early!!!

reality check - fun - but sloppy and overrated.. i can't give the friendly toast a strong endorsement. i have had one verygoodmeal there, and two subsequent ones that were not so good. decor is the strong point - its an eccentric, fun breakfast/lunch joint. each time i have gone, presentation and cooking have gotten sloppier. bread and eggs are excellent. however, the pancakes are tasteless except for a bitter baking soda aftertaste. my friend's pancakes were served partially burnt - the waiter seemed unabashed. in fact a lot of the servers seem to be fighting hangovers. the bread and eggs remaingoodand abundant. but the gingerbread waffles are dry and pretty tasteless despite fancy sauce and whipped cream. watery and bad coffee is a notable weakness. basicallygoodservice. not a great value - you will end up paying more than you expected for a sloppily prepared mix ofgoodand not-so-good food, and bad, pricey coffee.

trendy but not overly so, this great little diner is tucked in among the surrounding tech office parks. wide range of choices from vegan on up with a nice bar up front.goodcoffee, great black bean breakfast burrito with avacado lime sauce. and i'm not even a vegetarian. gets busy but staff is friendly. a definite must try if you're ever in the area.
