horrendous service....abusive, unprofessional staff,. do not go here unless your idea offunsunday morning brunch is long wait followed by abusive staff.......read on.

got there sunday morning at 10:15 a.m. for breakfast. told the wait was 25 minutes. finally got seating at 11:05 (may be not in their control...read on). placed the order at 11:10 a.m. i had a coffee to start, another member had hot tea. waitress, who supposedly was also a manager # 1, came around again at 11:40 to inquire if i wanted more coffee. i told her that i will just wait on the food and inquired how long will it take. soon, she said. she did not even ask if the other members wanted anything. another 15 minutes passed no food. so i went up to the cashier's desk and asked to speak to a manager. a lady seating at the counter said that she is the manager (manager # 2). explaining the situation to her, about the wait before and after seating. she mentioned that sunday morning wait before seating can be unpredictable and i can understand that. however she also thought that the wait after the order was too long and went in to check in the kitchen. walked right out with two orders in her hand followed by two orders in manager # 1's hand. manager # 2 said that she apologizes for the wait and will take care of the bill. i indicated that it was not necessary. as we started to eat, the original waitress (manager # 1) returns with maple syrup and says that she has been very nice to us(not asking the rest of the group if they wanted anything, not apolozising for the delay in the order, not even showing any concern or respect for customer's time even after the inquiry on the status of food when obviously it was ready to be served in the kitchen based on quick turnaround after speaking with manager # 2) and started to verbally abuse me. i asked her to leave the table, she would not. i got tired of her audacity and threatening look and went up to manager # 2 (while she was watching all these drama). she mentioned that this is manger #1's last day and she will not return to work next day. i had no desire to get into their history so i requested if we can have someone take care of our table and she said she would. by this time, members of the group were so disgusted with the whole experience and wanted to leave. she returned two minutes later and said that she is getting a different story from the original waitress. at this point, we were disgusted with their internal tensions and sniping staff and were ready to leave and her and decided to leave anyway.

members of group included very level headed college students attending prestigious universities as well as a successful engineer. this is the first experience of this kind in over twenty five years i have been living in usa (and we have travelled all over usa and world) and it stands out as the rest of the experience in cambridge area was nothing but pure joy. this experience, however needed to be shared with the hope that it will help people as well as the staff at the restaurant realize the error of their ways.

prettyy good. fun, kitschy decor helps keep you visually stimulated while you wait for a table and/or the food. service isn't bad if you don't mind the hipster vibe that can at times seem a bit (perhaps unintentionally) pretentious. the food is prettyyy good. i guess i'd describe it as chunky or clumsy. the portions are a little too big and bulky, the homemade bread is good but the slices are intrusively thick, the eggs and sauces are all just sort of plopped on top of eachother. it's very.. heavy handed. i guess that's just their style, it's just a little too heavy. i mean it does satisfy a general craving for salty, fatty breakfast foods, but... y'know when you're hung over and you're hungry but the thought of too much food just makes you feel kind of sick? that's sort of how i felt lol.funplace though and brunch is hard to find so i'd go again if i were in the area. just be prepared to wait for a table on the weekends.

go for the setting. great ambience, great location (parking is ample and garage is right across the street). as a long time resident of the area who just moved away i was a little sad to have done so having this place close now.

that being said, the food isn't great. it's barely ok. my hashbrowns were overcooked and burned, my meal wasn't seasoned very well. we went on a friday morning and barely anyone was there so i know it wasn't due to rush.

i can't help but love everything else about it - they food selection, the coffee cups, the cute tables. i'll be oging back for sure but mostly because it's hip andfunand makes me smile, not because i'm hungry.

retro-kitschfunand food!. i went to brunch at the friendly toast with friends, and enjoyed a rich meal and friendly service. the atmosphere is completely over-the-top retro kitsch, and the food is unapologetically rich. the four of us shared the king pancake, two chocolate chip and banana pancakes smeared with peanut butter, and topped with whipped cream and bacon. i ordered "the bus boy," which had a list of ingredients scrambled into eggs and served with toast. my husband ordered green eggs and ham, which were quite good.

the friendly toast is delicious, generous, and not for those seeking simple food and decor. the food is very good, and the service is friendly and efficient.

reality check -fun- but sloppy and overrated.. i can't give the friendly toast a strong endorsement. i have had one very good meal there, and two subsequent ones that were not so good. decor is the strong point - its an eccentric,funbreakfast/lunch joint. each time i have gone, presentation and cooking have gotten sloppier. bread and eggs are excellent. however, the pancakes are tasteless except for a bitter baking soda aftertaste. my friend's pancakes were served partially burnt - the waiter seemed unabashed. in fact a lot of the servers seem to be fighting hangovers. the bread and eggs remain good and abundant. but the gingerbread waffles are dry and pretty tasteless despite fancy sauce and whipped cream. watery and bad coffee is a notable weakness. basically good service. not a great value - you will end up paying more than you expected for a sloppily prepared mix of good and not-so-good food, and bad, pricey coffee.

great for a huge brunch. the platters are big, and you'll end up polishing off all of it and feeling pretty full because all the food is so delicious and homestyle. (if you see a description like "some --- served over one piece of toast," know that their 'toast' is actually a really thick slab of loaf roughly 8 inches square.) friendly toast has a lot of classic waffle/french toast/sandwich type items, interesting quesadillas/rice dishes/omelettes, and some really strange sounding combinations. like 'kitchen sink quesadilla': sweet potatoes, pecans, cheese, spinach, balsamic glaze, with coconut shrimp on the side??? (it was so good)

if it's not that busy, the service is excellent, but during rush hour once it took over an hour for our food to come out and then we got some undercooked chicken. the decor is incredibly kitschy and you can spend a while makingfunof pieces on the wall while you wait for food, although the overall atmosphere works with their diner theme.
