contemporary vibe evident upon entering. much attention clearly paid to interior details. pleasant but possibly bordering on trying hard imo.

for starters, spinach and ‘shrooms were great. the bruschetta medley not so; one had only a thumbnail-sized prosciutto ham on it.

the rest of our orders were good but not great — sonoma salad, tartufo pasta, truffle mac n’ cheese and wagyu pares. the latter was a tad too sweet, and the fried rice didn’t exactly pair well with it for me.

the staff need better training; we kept asking for water refills and dishes were served rather far apart. the manager was hardworking though. i’ll allow that their new and hope service gets better, especially given the higher price point.

second review: august 2018 - 5/5

one of my childhood best friends, e, visited us a few weeks ago during her summer break from her masters in taiwan, and of course, we opted to meet for a quick catch up.

we decided to go to up town center, since this place has pretty much every cuisine you can think of! 💕 i was pondering on where to eat, but e and a asked me which restaurants i've tried already, since they prefer the tried and tested ones. 😅 one restaurant came to mind... fat seed! 😋 during my first visit, i wanted to try so many dishes, but my tummy can only take so much. fat seed is actually one of the restaurants i'd be willing to visit again and again so i can try their other dishes! 😍 here's what we ordered:

✅ for e: the fat seed benedict with homemade maple bacon slab (php 295) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
for egg lovers, this one is a sure hit! 💖 the poached egg carefully placed atop their juicy and moutheatering maple bacon slab and brioche bun is just too good for words! it also comes with a light side salad to complement your meal.

✅ for a: wagyu pares (php 305) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
if you want a comforting meal, then this is for you! melt-in-your-mouth wagyu cubes in tasty sauce, beef broth that hugs you from the inside, and garlicky fried rice that's sure to fill you up! they serve it in these metal containers that remind me of where my mom puts my baon when i was in elementary and high school. 🤗 how nostalgic!

✅ for me: the fat seed signature porkchop (php 395) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
honestly, this is one of the prettiest dishes i've ever had! in fact, it was so pretty, i actually became hesitant to dig in! 😁 this intricately plated dish was so good, i was smiling from ear to ear after just one bite. 🤤 the thick cut beer brined porkchop was juicy and flavorful, and the mustard sauce and miso enhanced its flavor even more. pair it with the mild tasting sweet potato puree, and you'll surely devour the entire plate's content in no time! 😉

as usual, service is top-notch! my friends also loved the ambiance as much as i did during my first visit. 💖 indeed, the fat seed is the perfect place to eat and chill. their menu items are carefully crafted to ensure that your hearts and tummies will be full and happy after each visit.

a couple of weeks ago, i received a recommendation from bella for a cafe in up town center. one look on the items they serve -- and i'm sure josh and i would enjoy it here. 👌 a couple of days after that, i saw one of my high school batchmates post this on his page, and i took it as a sign that we have to visit this place as soon as we can. 😊

we finally visited the fat seed cafe + roastery two weeks ago, since we had to visit up town center to watch the shape of water. 😊 when we arrived, we were in awe at how nice the place is. 😍 we quickly sat down and browsed through their magazine type menu (plus points for this super cute menu too!), and got the following for our lunch:

✅ for sharing: mushroom fritters (php 175) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
okay. so we both loved this! as in we can't stop munching on them. it's actually a seemingly healthier alternative to your usual sinful chicharon. it's still fried, but at least it's lesser evil. 🙊 we loved how they were crunchy, but has a distinct chewiness when you get to the middle, and you can still taste and feel the mushroom in it. 😍 so so so good! i hope they can come up with another dip though. ketchup is good, but it lacked oomph.

✅ for me: buttermilk fried chicken with ube waffle in salted egg sauce (php 325) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
i was choosing between this and the quinoa bowl, but thought i'd splurge that day. 😁 i made a good choice, because the chicken thigh fillet was big and juicy, and the waffles were fluffy. the salted egg sauce was a bit sweet for my liking, though. something i realized as i popped the last bite of chicken and waffles in my mouth -- it's truly as sinful and scrumptious as it looks. 🙊🙈 no regrets, though! 😍

✅ for josh: the fat seed benedict with homemade maple bacon slab (php 295) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 (4.5⭐)
i was able to try a bite, but i wasn't able to fully savor the flavors, which was why i asked for a review from him. here's what he had to say: "it was absolute heaven for me. the eggs were cooked perfectly, with the runny yolk that coats everything in rich, creamy sauce. the bacon slabs were thick and juicy, while the salad and salad dressing add that needed crunch and tanginess to the ensemble 👌. my only gripe is how it lacks in the salty department. the eggs were not seasoned enough and the bacon was cooked with maple syrup so it was more sweet than salty. a touch saltiness would've made the dish perfect. 😋"

✅ for josh: colombia single origin v60 specialty coffee (php 150) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
josh was giddy to try the coffee here. 😍 he loved it! according to him, the aroma was very enticing and the flavor had a chocolate taste with fruity undertones. 😋 as for me, i just took a sniff and i already felt that it was too strong for my liking. 😆

service is great and memorable. all the staff were trained well, and you can feel that their willingness to serve is genuine. 👍 they are attentive at all times, too. 😍 the ambiance was very homey but a bit hipster. 😆 the interiors were as instagrammable as their scrumptious food!

the fat seed is definitely the place to be when you love coffee, a chill ambiance, and picture worthy food. 😊 i hope there will be more noise about this restaurant, because they deserve it. 😍 i heard they recently lauched their full menu already, so i'd definitely come by to check it out again soon!
