why not go to a better place?. i've been here a few times, usually with bigger groups.

the last time, a big work occasion, was fine, all in all.

but i still don't see why people don't put in a little more effort to have great thai food instead of standard mediocre thai food. meanwhile, you take your chances with service.

a while back, this was my experience:

'today, sunday for lunch, my colleagues and i stepped out of a workshop to grab a quick lunch. the restaurant had a number of tables in it, but wasn't too busy, and there were lots of staff. what looked like the head waiter took our order... we received ourricea few minutes later. and then we waited. and waited. when we noticed that other tables had received food, a colleague asked about the food. 'i'm sure it's coming,' he said. but didn't check with the kitchen. another ten minutes pass and it's the end of our lunch break. i demand that he check with the kitchen. when he comes back, he said that "they" didn't put in the order. what was even more stunning was that he didn't apologise to us, he just scurried away into the kitchen (perhaps to cancel the order, as we were getting up to leave). so, the only thing we got in an hour was rice, and a coconut juice, which our colleague had to ask for 3 times. you'll see from my other reviews that i'm fair, and usually generous with my ratings, but for not only the mistake but the unbelievable rudeness, thai pothong: you get my worst score ever. i very rarely feel like i've had a faultless dining experience, but that is what i got at thai pothong. wow. service was incredible- our waiter was attentive and friendly and intuitive to our needs. we brought our own bottle of wine and he still always ensure to keep our glasses full and remembered my friend puts ice in hers and took care of it for her.
the restaurant is big and busy and there is a vibrancy in the buzz of happy patrons but it is never too noisy to maintain a comfortable conversation. we had a table by the window and it was lovely.
we started with some cocktails which were insanely delicious!
the food was out-of-this-world good!!
we started with the tofu and mushroomricepaper rolls, prawns in betel leaves and chilli scallops. the prawns in betel leaves were the highlight- so many delightful flavours and textures!
for mains we got the coconut seafood curry and the red duck curry with coconut rice. everything was incredibly delicious and carmen and i practically licked the plates clean! the coconutricewas perfection and the depths of flavours in the seafood curry were amazing. the red duck curry was simply yum!
we didn't order dessert but we were brought a complimentary coconut ice-cream with jelly pieces and fresh lychee and orange. would recommended thai patong to anyone! just remember to book because it is crazy popular for a reason!

i went to thai pothong in newtown for the first time two years ago, and since then i've been keen to go back and so made a booking for mother's day lunch (and i'm glad i did, the line was out the door with no booking!). friedricethai pothong has to be one of the most ornately decorated restaurants i've been to, as soon as you walk in you are greeted by two gigantic, metal dinosaur-like figures. it may not be to everyone's taste, but i liked it- made me feel like i back in bangkok. pad se ew despite the restaurant being busy we had very quick service, our orders were taken promptly and the food arrived just as quick. the food was as delicious as i remembered (although the green curry was pretty average), and the spicy dishes actually had a bit of a chilli hit. we ordered the green curry, chilli prawns (spicy, creamy and delicious!), pad se ew (another tasty dish, although a little oily), thai fried rice, chilli hot basil chicken (can you tell we like our chilli? this dish was a crowd

ordered: barramundi curry $24.90, pad thai $19.90 and lamb cutlets $25.90. the restaurant is massive, they have a downstairs area, always really busy and staff are very friendly. my favorite dish was the lamb cutlets it was so succulent and flavorsome with its honey soy glaze. the pad thai was also good but def overpriced for what it is. the barra curry had a fantastic flavor but the fish was a little tough. we asked for takeaway for our leftovers and they kindly added extraricefor us too.

had the green curry chicken today and it’s the best ever green curry i have had in sydney☺️ full of flavor and i like the authentic chili touch in it. good for people who love authentic thai curry! the staff are all nice and friendly. very attentive and help with addingriceand water even though it’s a busy weekend night. the decor is appealing too not like some other casual thai places, full of spaces if you are a big group! the steamed jasminericeis endless which is also a bonus for $3. with the yummy green curry i can easily have two bowls. not to mention thericeitself is high quality. i also like the buddha statue displayed in the restaurant. highly recommend this place no wonder it’s the highest rated thai in the town.

guorium🧪 will definitely love here!!

the first impression here is the fancy luxury golden decoration!!! lol! what? giant iron men and traditional thai buddhas are placed together!?!?!? rofl.

its serving is soooooooo*1000 fast! i think only after several minutes, all the dishes we've ordered were ready. that fantastic!!! also, the waiters and waitress are so lovely and friendly. i think thai people generally are more friendly!

steam chilly scallop - 4/5 i am not a seafood lover so i can tell how good or bad they are but my friends they enjoyed.

coconut seafood  -4/5 seafood mix with yellow curry sauce is elegantly presented in a 'real fresh coconut bowl' the idea and the presentation is good and must be a selling point of this dish.

soft crab friedrice- 5/5 this is the most delicious friedricei've tried. normally, thai friedricein sydney is really sweet or over-dressed. but there, all good! perfect friedricewith chestnut!!

sea food tom yum soup - 4/5

lastly, roast beef salad - i am too full to try the last dish anymore..... but my friend, she loves it, and she almost finished the whole dish by her own.

it could be the biggest thai restaurant in sydney. beautiful ambiance & wonderful customer service. food has a modern twist & all well presented. 😃

the little entree dishes were delicious and prepared with details & attention. my favourite was the golden egg pastry tartlets. the deep fried tartlets were light & crispy, there was no nasty greasy aftertaste. the filling was flavoursome. betel leaf prawns were nice, not only delicious but fun as you roll it up and stick in your gob piles of thai spicy goodness. the only fault i found was the sauce in the mixture was too strong & salty that it overpowered the freshness of the prawn. 😌

last but not least, stickyricemango dessert was the star of the meal. it was beautifully fanned out with slices of mango to form a lovely rose. not just the look, the salty balance of therice& mango with the rich coconut cream was perfect to this dessert. 🤩

lots of decor, big space and 2 big transformers at the entrance to entice the passerby to stop by. having just finished watching a play, we stopped by for some quick food. little did i know that this place was super expensive. had the black bean beef $19, red panang duck curry $23 and 2ricebowls $6. for the price, i expected alot and thankfully it delivered. both dishes were very nice but needed more of it. thericewas a bit raw in some parts. your paying extra (compared to other thai joints) for the ambience and service. would i come back? nah.

amazingly good food. excellent friendly service (constantly have water andricerefilled). can get busy on weekends, and we had a party booking that took a long time to bring our order (partially my fault for refusing to take the banquet menu). have been many times, and couldn't recommend it more.

one of my favourite thai restaurants in sydney. i make a point to visit whenever i am in the area.

it's a little more expensive, but great ambience especially for kids.

very large dining area good for larger parties, but be careful, on busy nights you may have to get the banquet (which is still good, but i prefer the variety of ordering my own things).

curries are excellent (especially the red duck curry), noodle dishes are also great. have not had anything bad from here yet

as a lover of food, i am never disappointed when i decide to eat at thai pothong. i am always greeted by the staff and the warm environment. even if i do not have a table reservation i do not have to wait long to be allocated a table. the food is very tasty and is plated very nicely. the timing for the food is also very quick. it is around a 5-15 min wait for everything to arrive, including drinks and entrees. in addition if the food is taking a bit longer then usual i am informed by the waiter and asked if that is fine with me. in addition the waiters always make sure that you havericeon your plate and your glass of water is always full haha. finally i like the creativity of the establishment. they have many decorations that symbolise the thai culture and they also provide you with gift vouchers with every visit that you can use to purchase gifts from their gift store. highly recommend and will be back there again!!
