such a large dining space with an amazing and lively atmosphere!
the service is amazing and the staff are so friendly and welcoming as well!
the food is honestly so delicious. we tried the curry puffs, tom yum soup, pad se ew, massaman curry and and barbecue pork! my favourites were no doubt the tender barbecue pork with the amazing dipping sauce and the tom yum soup which had the right balance of sour, salty and chilli!
have to admit, it’s on the pricey side but it is so worth it. will be back again to try the rest of the menu without a doubt!

if you dont book you will have to wait!!. i like this place, it's one of the best thai restaurants i've been too but the only thing is the price. it's more expensive than other places and being in newtown where there are so many thai places (over 20 when i walked around and counted), it's still always looks booked out.booking recommended otherwise you will wait for a long time. the range of food is also better than your average thai place. highly recommended

this place is a great place to dine. the food is good but whati i love most is the clean and decorative surrounds.
whilst they tryand jam them in sometimes and it can get overcrowded this place is always a nice experience.

deliciously decorated and fed. no thai restaurant in sydney as spacious as thai pothong, that's for sure. i was delighted to see the restaurant nicely decorated with thai antiques, paintings and elephant statues. the waiters were polite and presentable. we opted for mixed entree, chicken cashew (signature dish), red duck curry and tofu choo chee. the chicken cashew was tasty, as well as tofu choo chee. the red duck curry was subtle and spicy. never had one like this before. worth your saturday lunch :)

a great restaurant in newtown. spacious, clean and decor is very 'thai', without being tacky or too over the top. the food here is flavoursome and varied. pricing is a tad more expensive than other thai restaurants, but really worth it. the one factor that makes dining here a pleasure, is no doubt, the staff. although very busy, they are always friendly and welcoming. i have always received good service, every time i've dined here. highly recommend and will definitely continue to come back.

very good service. best service in newtown. fast service, good portion of food. average taste (i've been to many other thai restaurants with much better food but far worse service). a little bit expensive but will surely go back.

this restaurant has the best service i've encountered in sydney! all of the staff are very attentive and very friendly, it makes for such a nice night. the food is also delicious and the banquet meals great value and more than enough for everyone. i've been here with a large group of people a couple of times and would come back again and again. we love thai pothong!!! thank you so much for the lovely night :)

why not go to a better place?. i've been here a few times, usually with bigger groups.

the last time, a big work occasion, was fine, all in all.

but i still don't see why people don't put in a little more effort to have great thai food instead of standard mediocre thai food. meanwhile, you take your chances with service.

a while back, this was my experience:

'today, sunday for lunch, my colleagues and i stepped out of a workshop to grab a quick lunch. the restaurant had a number of tables in it, but wasn't too busy, and there were lots of staff. what looked like the head waiter took our order... we received our rice a few minutes later. and then we waited. and waited. when we noticed that other tables had received food, a colleague asked about the food. 'i'm sure it's coming,' he said. but didn't check with the kitchen. another ten minutes pass and it's the end of our lunch break. i demand that he check with the kitchen. when he comes back, he said that "they" didn't put in the order. what was even more stunning was that he didn't apologise to us, he just scurried away into the kitchen (perhaps to cancel the order, as we were getting up to leave). so, the only thing we got in an hour was rice, and a coconut juice, which our colleague had to ask for 3 times. you'll see from my other reviews that i'm fair, and usually generous with my ratings, but for not only the mistake but the unbelievable rudeness, thai pothong: you get my worst score ever. i very rarely feel like i've had a faultless dining experience, but that is what i got at thai pothong. wow. service was incredible- our waiter was attentive and friendly and intuitive to our needs. we brought our own bottle of wine and he still always ensure to keep our glasses full and remembered my friend puts ice in hers and took care of it for her.
the restaurant is big and busy and there is a vibrancy in the buzz of happy patrons but it is never too noisy to maintain a comfortable conversation. we had a table by the window and it was lovely.
we started with some cocktails which were insanely delicious!
the food was out-of-this-world good!!
we started with the tofu and mushroom rice paper rolls, prawns in betel leaves and chilli scallops. the prawns in betel leaves were the highlight- so many delightful flavours and textures!
for mains we got the coconut seafood curry and the red duck curry with coconut rice. everything was incredibly delicious and carmen and i practically licked the plates clean! the coconut rice was perfection and the depths of flavours in the seafood curry were amazing. the red duck curry was simply yum!
we didn't order dessert but we were brought a complimentary coconut ice-cream with jelly pieces and fresh lychee and orange. would recommended thai patong to anyone! just remember to book because it is crazy popular for a reason!

i went to thai pothong in newtown for the first time two years ago, and since then i've been keen to go back and so made a booking for mother's day lunch (and i'm glad i did, the line was out the door with no booking!). fried rice thai pothong has to be one of the most ornately decorated restaurants i've been to, as soon as you walk in you are greeted by two gigantic, metal dinosaur-like figures. it may not be to everyone's taste, but i liked it- made me feel like i back in bangkok. pad se ew despite the restaurant being busy we had very quick service, our orders were taken promptly and the food arrived just as quick. the food was as delicious as i remembered (although the green curry was pretty average), and the spicy dishes actually had a bit of a chilli hit. we ordered the green curry, chilli prawns (spicy, creamy and delicious!), pad se ew (another tasty dish, although a little oily), thai fried rice, chilli hot basil chicken (can you tell we like our chilli? this dish was a crowd

not even worth considering. this place used to be my absolute favorite thai restaurant but the quality of food and service has dropped ridiculously low.
