taste of texas

when we arrived, we were asked to go to a waiting area which was really spacious. it can be a separate restaurant by itself because of its area. there are free drinks available as you wait, and the most interesting part is that there are saddles where you can sit on while waiting, and drinking your beverage. it was so cool! the restaurant is also very roomy. there is an area with a high ceiling. there is also an area with a long table which is probably suitable for a more private dining experience.

when we were seated to our reserved table, the waiter asked for our appetizers. we had the texas quail bites. these are grilled marinated quails wrapped in bacon with a thin slice of jalapeño and these come with a spicy ranch dressing and a dr. pepper barbeque sauce. this was the best appetizer for me. there was so much flavor in every bite! there was a lot of things going on at the same time! there was perfect heat, sweetness, and saltiness altogether. and just in case you guys missed it, it was bacon-wrapped. i believe i have said enough.

another appetizer we had was the jalapeño stuffed shrimp. these are large fried shrimps, battered and stuffed with monterey jack cheese and a slice of mild jalapeño for some heat. this is served with a cilantro-tomatillo sauce. given that i am allergic to shrimp, i typically do not eat much of these. but after tasting this dish, i just had to give my angry belly 3 of these. unlike other shrimp dishes which rely heavily on their sauces, this one is very flavorful in itself and i do not even know how they do it. i don’t want to question it. i just want to eat it. excellent dish! that’s coming from a guy who’s allergic to shrimp.

after finishing our appetizers, we were asked for our steak orders. i had the bone-in filet which will set you back $59.95 and i went for the option where i can wrap the side of my steak with a strip of bacon topped with jumbo lump crab meat with hollandaise sauce. this costs an additional $9.95. the bone-in filet is a 14-ounce “bone-in” center cut filet. it’s much more flavorful because it is aged on the bone. and another cool thing with the taste of texas is, if it’s your first time in their restaurant, you can go to their kitchen and handpick your meat yourself. they will put a number on it so that you will know that it’s your chosen meat on your plate.

while our steaks were being cooked, we were prompted to have our salad buffet. their salad buffet has a lot to offer. from different kinds of cheese, to root crops, greens, mushrooms, and even caviar.

and here comes the main event. the certified angus beef steaks. i had a hard time taking photos because i was too excited to have a bite! i hope these would do for you guys. the steak was very tender. most importantly, there was no need for any sauce. the flavor was all there. i put the crab meat on one side and the bacon on the other side. then i found myself marveling at the fact that i have 3 delicious animals on my plate. it was a joy to eat. glorious, in fact. i wish i could have this meal again with the other angry bellies next time.

to be honest, i think this dish ruined all other steaks for me. it seems like things will never be the same way again when it comes to steaks. that’s probably the only downside.

guys, seriously, if i give the bone-in filet of the taste of texas 5 out of 5, it would be a huge understatement. it won’t do the dish any justice.

i apologize to the folks at the taste of texas, but i can only give a rating of 5. definitely worth a try, everyone! no doubt, i will come back!

overpriced and underquality!! great ambiance nice decor, but that's not enough in a food town like houston. much better steaks at many steakhouses like pappas bros, perry's, capital grill, flemings, etc, etc.

very texas. the prices are equal to a ruth's chris or morton's but the atmosphere is very down home texas. great place to take out of towners if you want to give them a taste of texas.

perhaps i should try again?. with so many options in town i have only tried this place twice. once with a large group and once with just 4 people. while the atmosphere is relaxing to a country boy like myself, i did not like my steak either trip. everyone else in our party seemed to like it, but i just did not think my steaks were good at all. i wanted to like it here, but it was not even ok. they weren't too keen on making it right on my last trip, so i pretty much filed them in the "do not return" box in my head. in my opinion there are many better choices for a steak in houston - starting with my back yard.

fine dining quality w/ casual setting. delicious steak! they have a salad, cheese & bread bar. a little weirded out w/ the decor @ first, but it has grown on me. my first impression was a very clean newly opened ryans but with delicous food, great drinks & awesome service:)

finally, we come to the good-old american steakhouse, and taste of texas is the place to go for juicy angus beef. once you have selected your entree, you can even venture into the ‘butcher shop’ to choose your steak. i doubt your average diner could tell the difference between two un-cooked pieces of meat, but why pass up the chance to make your dining experience feel even more gourmet?

service was good and the salad bar was comprehensive however the porterhouse was just okay. after dinner we had the desert served in the glass boot. it was tasty but the cinnamon was overpowering.

terrible customer service ever received. we drove long way come to austin and went here since everyone seems recommend this place. however, the food servicing is extremely slow, and we had to wait an hour to get the steak after calling the waiter. we were so exhausted abs almost fall asleep at the table. i don’t have any problem with the food itself just the customer service. and on top of the poor service, the sr. manager didn’t even offer a single apology after i explained to him how long we’ve been waiting and how tired we were. all i wanted was a single apology and they didn’t even say sorry how long they had customer to wait until to the point can’t even drive back home because of tiredness! as 5 star steak house, the customer service is 0 star!

a must stop in houston

this place is a one of a kind restaurant in the houston area. it’s a single location privately owned place that caters to the customers.

the menu had excellent options but of course they are know for steaks. you can go in the kitchen and personally pick your cut of meat which is really cool!

the steak was cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth! the brussel sprouts was a good complimented the steak and were flavorful and tasty.

lastly, i had some cinnamon ice cream that is made by blue bell only for taste of texas. they bring it out in a homemade toffee bowl that goes perfect with the ice cream, this is a must try... you won’t be disappointed!

the staff is very friendly and the service is great!

you have to try this place!

we ordered one medium ribeye and one medium filet mignon. the waitress took a note on the meat we chose. however, both of the meat came as well-done not even medium-well. they offered to replace the meat but we didn't have much time for another meat. so we had to eat grey meat. if there was an overcooking problem with only one of the meats i would understand. but i can't understand how such a well known steakhouse could burn both meats. another problem is extremely slow service. we waited for 50 minutes for the meats.

pretty good as usual. i always get the stuffed jalapeños with cilantro sauce. the cheeseburger was not too bad but five guys taste better to me. the salad bar has a lot to offer. service was good and our server was very polite and prompt.
very good but too pricy. you can find similar tasting stakes in the city for cheaper.

we went to the taste of texas last night for a birthday celebration. i wanted it to be special and we both decided this would be a nice place to go to. it was supposed to be right p there with  ruth chris, not. it was more like an upscale outback steakhouse only  more expensive. we were not impressed. dinner was over $200 for 2 people! salad bar was definitely not up to par. it was not what we considered fine dining. it was noisy; it was not as clean. crowded about an hour’s wait, and to tell you the truth the steaks were not as good as what we can make at home, when we buy the steak at either central market or costco's dedicated meat counter. the prime rib was awful.  the ambiance definitely was not conducive for a date night, as you could barely hear the person you were with. neither one of us want to go back. definitely overpriced for what you get.
