ate there 5/7/12. loved the speakeasy vibe, and straightforward menu. had a few house cocktails, all expertly crafted. started with the beet bruschetta (rustic and satisfying), seared scallop w/ farro (divinely tender scallops), and the shaved brussels sproutsalad(light and wonderful). the staff were wonderfully accomodating and service-minded. our main meal was the duck confit (creamy-textured beans offset delicious duck), and the pan-fried pork shoulder (oh! it's a pulled pork "crab" cake with the most decadent grits ever). you should go. we're going back. get the bête noir.

this is one of my favorite spots for dinner in new orleans. the atmosphere is easy and quaint. the charm of new orleans can be seen all over this place. chef alex harrell serves up drool worthy dishes time and time again. my personal recommendation is the shaved brussels sproutssaladand the braised beef cheek. eat here. you won't regret it.

my wife and i had dinner here on a friday night and had a wonderful meal. it was a fabulous restaurant but, we found a couple of things that we wished were a little different.
the hostess stand is towards the back of the restaurant, where their al fresco dining is, which is fine, but there is nothing in the front of the house, or in the street that lets you know that. we saw several people trying to figure out how to get into the restaurant, as we were figuring it out ourselves. some signage would be nice at the entrance to let patrons know where to find the hostess. the other issue we had was it is extremely dark, i mean really dark (forgive my picture quality). we had to use our cell phones to read the menu. i like a nice ambiance like the rest of you guys, but this was more like a bat cave, and the candle on the table was a tiny disposable one and was just not enough to read what they were offering.
that being said, i can say that the dinner was very good. i ate the veal sweetbreads and they were some of the very best i have ever eaten. i took a picture for you all and it was not of the quality i would want to post, due to the lighting. i next chose the seasonal marketsaladand it needed salt, quite a bit of it. i do not ask for salt in restaurants of this quality, since they frequently do not have it on the table, but it improved it a huge amount. i would say it was so-so before and good after, but not mind blowing.
what was mind blowing was the beef cheeks! oh man.....these should be on your bucket list! it was a flavor explosion and my wife conceded to me that i out ordered her by a huge amount. the beef melted in my mouth and i ate every bit of it.
my wife ordered the pot de cream and i am not a huge dessert person, but i easily gobbled down half of her dish. it is rich, with whipped cream on top, but a great texture....somewhere between mousse and cheese cake.
i would recommend sylvain to anyone that is a foodie, you can find wonderful dishes, and pretty affordable prices, particularly if you are a little adventurous. thesaladwas the only thing in my meal that was not wonderful.
the only thing that took points off my rating was just how dark the main dining room was and the aforementioned salad.

a hidden gem. sylvain's was recommended by a local woman on our flight. it was incredible, simple, elegant and casual all in one. we started with the goat milk ricotta, kale pesto and butternut squash bruschetta. i cannot wait to try and recreate it at home! my mom and i split the fried chicken sandwich, it was huge! the chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. juicy and not greasy at all with giant sweet pickle chips. my friend had the shaved brussels sproutssaladand was thrilled with her choice as well! i would absolutely put this on my top 5 best chicken sandwiches ever!

nervous nelly becomes foodie. let me start out by saying that i am in no way a "foodie." new and "different" foods actually kind of scare me. if my momma didn't cook it at home, i generally assume it will be weird and taste bad. so, when my friend suggested going to sylvain, i checked out the menu and promptly broke into a cold sweat.

beef cheeks?
sweetbreads?
beet bruschetta?

my other concern going in was that i am currently eating paleo/gluten-free. the dishes seemed so "fancy" and "crafted", and each had some item that was a no-no for me, but i thought it might be offensive for me to ask the chef to change one of his dishes to suit me.

shortly after sitting down, my concerns began to diminish and, i'll cut to the chase here: i had a lovely experience and some of the best food i've ever eaten in my life.

before going to sylvain, i did what any nervous nelly would do, i got on line and spent 3 hours reading reviews. among the small amount of negative comments, there were a few common ones: too noisy. arrogant servers. reservation/wait time issues. tasteless or dry food.

my experience was that the place was no noisier than most restaurants. the music was just loud enough to kind of hear over the conversations going on in the room. my friend and i were able to hear each other just fine and had a lovely conversation. though the room was packed, we really felt like we had our own little space, very intimate and lovely. we arrived early for our reservation but they sat us anyway and even moved us to a nicer table by the window. the server was very kind. we had lots of questions and he answered them all for us. he was not put off at all when i asked about possible gluten-free substitutions for potatoes/grits/rice. he talked to the chef and came back with a few suggestions.

we ordered the brussel sproutsaladand thesaladof the night: shaved squash, zucchini and red onion with feta in a red wine vinegar dressing. it was garnished with mint, which totally made thesaladfor me. my friend wanted thatsaladand i was leery about uncooked squash...but it was divine! the mint was so unexpected and wonderful and the flavors blended together in the most delicious way. the brussel sproutsaladwas also very good. there was a touch of lemon in the vinaigrette that was surprising and, again, made the salad.

for our main course, we ordered the beef cheeks and pork shoulder. the chef prepared a sautee of spinach, onion and blackeyed peas for me instead of potatoes. i am not exaggerating when i say that the beef cheeks were the best thing i've ever eaten in my life. from the moment i put my fork through the meat, i was in love. cutting the beef was like cutting a roasted marshmallow. it was unbelievably tender. by itself it was to die for, but with the spinach sautte...well, i just sat there and groaned in delight. didn't miss the potatoes at all.

my friend's pork shoulder was very good as well. but, my favorite thing on her plate were the greens. i don't eat greens. i've tried them a few times and they were always too bitter for me. these greens would convert a veggie hater. seriously, they are that good.

new and different food like this might just turn me into a foodie!

so, the upshot is, don't hesitate to try sylvain. forget the negative comments on here. if those issues did arise, they've clearly addressed them. everything was stellar and i'll definitely be back!!

delicious ****but noisy. had dinner there sat.11-12-11. the food and service is great, the place is cute and has an interesting menu. heirloom tomatosaladwith spicy sprouts was sublime. decent prices because the quality of the food is so high. wonderful tuna entree and husband's entree of beef cheeks were melting in the mouth. great service, friendly and efficient.
major problem: so noisy you may feel assaulted. i know that noisy restaurants are the hip thing but if you can't talk to your dinner partners it detracts from the meal...
