best portuguese tarts in sydney by a long way...

-----31 may, 2013-----

as a local we have been to this cafe for years - ever since it opened. you don't go there for thecoffeebut the amazing and consistently delicious pastries. the nanas (portuguese tarts) are easily the best in sydney. other favourites are the twisted almond scrolls and the chocolate salami. it's a busy shop as its very popular. i highly recommend it.

a haven for portuguese tart lovers. the tart shell is wonderfully flaky crisp even when it is served cold. the gooey custard filling is light without the cloying feeling. 😍

aside from the traditional pastéis de nata, they also come in chocolate, salted caramel, almond, blueberry and raspberry flavour. there are also croissants, cakes, donuts and portuguese lamingtons etc which you can stop in and enjoy acoffeewith. ☺️

seemed comparatively lightweight. the custard tart was bland except for the burnt pastry and loads of cinnamon, as was the nutty mousse thing, and thecoffeewas very weak, not much more than hot milk.

if you cannot go to portugal for a portuguese tart fix, you go to sweet belem in petersham. and you have to go early for all the traditional portuguese sweets as they sell out fast. i recently went in the afternoon, just before closing and only scored a mille feuille, which was divine. next time i pop in, it will be for morning tea. can’t wait and thecoffeeis pretty good too! #sweetbelem

i'd walked past this place a few times, always in a hurry, thinking that i absolutely had to return and check it out sometime. after grocery shopping yesterday, i thought i'd be able to make it in time before the shop closed at 5. i got there at 5.01, but they patiently let me muse over the display for a few minutes before i settled on the coconut custard.
and it was excellent. rich and decadent, one of the best desserts i've had in a long time. i got a takeaway, but thecoffeecups i saw some other patrons looked cute and authentically portuguese, so next time around i hope i'll be able to eat-in. i'm thinking white chocolate mousse for my next time.

hands down the best custard tart i’ve ever had. dense, rich but still fresh at the same time.

the pastry was crispy and crusty and delicious and maybe ever a little bit salty but maybe i was just imagining something. the filling was creamy and perfect amount of sweet with a hint of tang.

the creme caramel was also fantastic.

thecoffeewasn’t great... a little watery and too hot milk tasted slightly burnt.

seriously close to the real thing! i know maybe portuguese tarts are the stars here, but the chourizo bread is truly what makes me feel like i'm in portugal for a moment. the atmosphere is really nice, always a bit busy and the staff is very friendly. love the decoration, in particular the table tops. thecoffeecould be better though.

omg sweet belem seriously?? how have i only just found out about these amazing portuguese tarts!?

okay, technically the place isn’t perfect because thecoffeewas average, tea’s just t2, but i cannot get the portuguese tarts out of my head, so a 5 it is! they had a slight crisp and warm, soft centre – it was just ridiculous. after the first one, it’s just mandatory to get another one which is exactly what i did! at $3.30 each they’re not the cheapest, but i’m gladly going back and buying more (takeaway too so i can devour them in the comfort of my own home).

the queijada was pretty nice too but i don’t think anything can overtake the custard tart. a must try!

5.0 for the portugese tarts alone. these may not have the same instagram appeal but they hold their own with any trendy bakery creations from anywhere in sydney. they sell out fast & are made in small lots, so get here early.

as an extra bonus, thecoffeehere is also good. so is the orange cake. usually i just buy boxes of the tarts but when i have time i love to have one here with coffee, among people who come here for the cakes rather than to be seen and be trendy.

the nata's / portuguese tarts are much better quality across the road at honeymoon patisserie, and half the price. but it is definitely worth stopping in belem when they are open, for they have an amazing top end specialty cake selection, with interesting flavours, you can spend a good 5 minutes just deciding what you will order. the staff are always friendly and chatty, and thecoffeeis also good. it is also air conditioned like honeymoon, which is a rare find in the inner west, so makes for an enjoyable outing in summer.
