the most delicious portuguese tarts around. amazingcakesand pasties as well. in fact everything from here is beautiful. great to take away for dessert at home or eating in too.
make sure you don’t turn up on a day they’re closed. i made this mistake once and it was devastating!

have had a variety ofcakesfrom here and all were well executed but you really come here for the portuguese tarts.

the crisp flakey pastry cupping the unctuous custard with a caramelised top? best in sydney.

ivanhoe and lenni raved about the portuguese tarts from sweet belem so this bakery was included as a food pit stop in petersham. surprisingly, this was up the road from the tiny giant so our walk to here came to an end within 2 min.😂. the cafe has a vast display of pastries, cakesand tarts that all looked mouth-watering. i ended up picking a sampler pack of various portuguese tarts, including their original cinnamon tarts and ones with raspberry and passionfruit, and some baked chocolate tarts that lenni loved.

after reading a few reviews on here about the fabled portuguese tart i really wanted to try thecakesfrom here! i got up early to make sure i didn't miss out on any of them. i went a bit overboard with buyingcakesbut since friends were coming over i didn't feel so bad. the selection i bought were belem tarts (portuguese tarts) which had light flaky pastry and a creamy egg filling and still warm as could feel the heat coming out of the cake box, portuguese lamington which had a nice like cake with an egg jam filling covered with chocolate and coconut, jesuitas (traditional puff, egg jam, almonds) which like the portuguese tart, shares the delicious flaky pastry and creamy egg filling, baked chocolate tart which had a really short chocolate pastry and a not too sweet chocolate filling, lime & coconut mousse which was light and fluffy and on a coconut base, and pastel de amendoa (almond & hazelnut tart) which had a crisp tart and a delicious filling. overall very pleased that i visited here and sure to be back to eat in the store.

i have loved this place since i first came and after so many years and change of hands, i still love it. there is such a huge array of goodies here, fromcakesto tarts to pastries with a few savoury ones amongst all the delectable sweets. the favourites are their portuguese tarts & nutella filled ones. but i also love their donuts - a more dough fried bread with with salted caramel or dulce de leche. the mille feuille is also amazing with generous amount of custard as is the almond and hazelnut tart. actually everything is great and served with a smile!

5.0 for the portugese tarts alone. these may not have the same instagram appeal but they hold their own with any trendy bakery creations from anywhere in sydney. they sell out fast & are made in small lots, so get here early.

as an extra bonus, the coffee here is also good. so is the orange cake. usually i just buy boxes of the tarts but when i have time i love to have one here with coffee, among people who come here for thecakesrather than to be seen and be trendy.

sweet belem tarts. for years i thought portuguese tarts were a new-age asian delicacy made by quirky taiwanese young-trepreneurs in pop-up outlets found in the streets of chinatown and the basement of the world square shopping centre in the cbd.

on the lively grub street of petersham stood an ordinary looking shop that resembled an old traditional baking house with aluminium venetian blinds on their glass window. a glass cabinet filled with rows ofcakesand pretty looking desserts filled up about half the shop, with only a couple of table-tops (looked like greek-inspired art to me) and chairs around. it was a very quiet afternoon, thanks to the rain that dampen the mood of summer.

the sweet balem tart, from what i have heard, was the main attraction. my first bite onto the light and flaky pastry changed my mind completely about what good portuguese tarts taste like. the custard tart was rich but not overly sweet to the extent where one would have their eyes wide shut. the cinnamon powder sprinkled on top left a sweet flavor on the tongue and a wonderful aroma to the pastry.

it is not often i would pay for $3 for a pop in this side of town, but for this fresh-out-of-the-oven pastry and its light and flaky texture, i would go for seconds.
