sweetbelemseems popular,always someone in there

my rating is what i ordered i believe because there is too many sweet options in here

tried the pineapple cake, strange texture and taste, not sure if i tasted any pineapple!

the chila tart was strange also,it looks like strings of shredded coconut but it isn't. it's sticky and stringy and has a strong taste which my taste buds didn't enjoy i

so far, pretty bad experience but i'll re review if i come back

if you cannot go to portugal for a portuguese tart fix, you go to sweetbelemin petersham. and you have to go early for all the traditional portuguese sweets as they sell out fast. i recently went in the afternoon, just before closing and only scored a mille feuille, which was divine. next time i pop in, it will be for morning tea. can’t wait and the coffee is pretty good too! #sweetbelem

it’s said that sweetbelemhas the best portuguese tart in sydney. so here i am. a lot of customers in the weekend morning. the tart was delicious, the filling was running and silky. but what gave me a surprise was the flourless chocolate cake. it was kinda like a lava cake but not that running, just keep the moisture texture, really impressed.

this time we picked up the flourless orange cake and the mille feuille. i wasn't a big fan of the heavy cake which was soaked in syrup. it was a very moist, almost wet. in contrast, the mille feuille was delightful with vanilla custard sandwiched between layers of flaky, crisp pastry.

decided to drop by the legendary sweetbelemas we were in the neighbourhood. the pastry counter looked very enticing but as we'd just finished brunch, we settled for an egg tart each. compared to other portuguese egg tarts, the thick layer of custard was quite firm and not as sweet which i liked. the crust was also not overly flaky so much neater to eat. my friend's tart was slightly warm out of the oven and that was nicer than the room temperature version i had. the staff were brisk and efficient.

they called the custard tarts at sweetbelemthe most authentic ones but i begged to differ. the tarts were nowhere as authentic or tasty as those which i had tried in belem, lisbon or porto. too sweet and the authentic ones would not have cinnamon powder sprinkled over them.

located in petersham, sweetbelemreminded me of the portuguese tarts i had in lisbon! flakey exterior, warm soft custard which melts in your mouth. highly recommended.

ivanhoe and lenni raved about the portuguese tarts from sweetbelemso this bakery was included as a food pit stop in petersham. surprisingly, this was up the road from the tiny giant so our walk to here came to an end within 2 min.😂. the cafe has a vast display of pastries, cakes and tarts that all looked mouth-watering. i ended up picking a sampler pack of various portuguese tarts, including their original cinnamon tarts and ones with raspberry and passionfruit, and some baked chocolate tarts that lenni loved.

we stumbled on sweetbelemabout 5 years ago based on a clip from food safari. i was a fan of portuguese tarts up to that point, at least what i had sampled at other patisseries in sydney. after my first bite here, i realised that others were a poor imitation and this was simply a different level. it's hard to explain how much better they are here, you'll just have to experience it yourself. if there are better places in sydney, let me know - i'm dubious but open to recommendations. the pastry for me is probably the easiest element to point out; it is multi-layered like filo or millefiori, unlike any other portuguese tart shell i have had, with a delightful crunch and crumble in your mouth. they make a lot of other pastries here and we have tried a few, most good or very good. but to my mind, you must begin at these tarts. and if never get past them, for me they are enough to keep you satisfied.

i don't normally even like portuguese egg tarts, but the one at sweetbelemis fantastic! we also took away the chocolate and caramel tart, which was lovely - though i would have preferred a slightly softer crust.

after reading a few reviews on here about the fabled portuguese tart i really wanted to try the cakes from here! i got up early to make sure i didn't miss out on any of them. i went a bit overboard with buying cakes but since friends were coming over i didn't feel so bad. the selection i bought werebelemtarts (portuguese tarts) which had light flaky pastry and a creamy egg filling and still warm as could feel the heat coming out of the cake box, portuguese lamington which had a nice like cake with an egg jam filling covered with chocolate and coconut, jesuitas (traditional puff, egg jam, almonds) which like the portuguese tart, shares the delicious flaky pastry and creamy egg filling, baked chocolate tart which had a really short chocolate pastry and a not too sweet chocolate filling, lime & coconut mousse which was light and fluffy and on a coconut base, and pastel de amendoa (almond & hazelnut tart) which had a crisp tart and a delicious filling. overall very pleased that i visited here and sure to be back to eat in the store.

omg sweetbelemseriously?? how have i only just found out about these amazing portuguese tarts!?

okay, technically the place isn’t perfect because the coffee was average, tea’s just t2, but i cannot get the portuguese tarts out of my head, so a 5 it is! they had a slight crisp and warm, soft centre – it was just ridiculous. after the first one, it’s just mandatory to get another one which is exactly what i did! at $3.30 each they’re not the cheapest, but i’m gladly going back and buying more (takeaway too so i can devour them in the comfort of my own home).

the queijada was pretty nice too but i don’t think anything can overtake the custard tart. a must try!

just thinking about sweetbelemstarts my mouth watering. on a trip to lisbon, some portuguese friends took us tobelemto catch a ferry over to an island for a seafood eating extravaganza. but first they insisted we visit pasteis debelemto try their natas (portuguese egg tarts). it was one of those out of body eating experiences that i have never forgotten. hot gorgeous perfectly caramellised egg tarts straight out of the oven, in a beautiful old café with hand painted blue and white tiles on the walls. at 11am in the morning, we were surrounded by old men eating a dozen natas at a time and washing them down with what looked like sherry. extraordinary! sweetbelemdoes not benefit from quite that experience but they do the best natas that i've tasted in sydney, and are the only place that i buy them :)
