great food and sushi. i have been to surin west many times, and it doesn't disappoint. the food is great and the sushi is excellent. the better time to go is lunch because you get more bang for your buck.

great thai food. this restaurant is in the heart of 5 points, and is one of the best gems of birmingham. it is a bit pricey. the food portions are great, and so is the sushi. i would definitely recommed it to anyone who likes chinese or japanese food. the chicken noodle bowl is the best. also the take-out is a great option for businesses. highly recommended.

great introduction to thai food. first thai food experience, and glad this was it. the rock and roll maki was nice and fresh, and my tofu and broccoli stir fry was great (they cooked the tofu perfectly! kudos for that alone!) it's neat, too, that the rice comes in its own dish to keep it nice and hot and allow you to serve however much you want as you want it. pricing is reasonable for the amount of food you get. also, the service was great, the restaurant interior is pleasant, and you can watch the chefs prepare the sushi if you sit in certain areas (which i did and it was very cool).

in defense of surin west.... okay i see terrible reviews, but i have totally seen great reviews of restaurants and when i dined there, i hated it.
i am long overdue for this one, as my last 3 experiences at surin west were awesome! my boyfriend and i went for lunch one day (you get a free cup of soup with your entree). i love the spicy shrimp coconut soup. i'm always craving it about a week after i eat it. i've tried most of the lunch entrees, but the spicy beef salad gets me every time. the veges seem so fresh and the juices go so well with the salad. also, it's a great value because lunch is fairly cheap there, and the portions are excellent. my service that day wasn't over the top or anything, but i didn't feel like it was bad by any means.
my last visit to surin west was at dinner. we went to get 1/2 price appetizers (5:30 to 7 from tuesday through thurs i think), so this definitely led me to try some new things. my boyfriend loves the crab angels, and they were fantastic as usual. the eggrolls were good, nice and hot but nothing to write home about. obviously, i got a whole bowl of the soup and loved it. my favorite appetizer was the nam-sod. it's this delicious beef ground up with onions and peppers and all kinds of spices and you wrap it up in the cabbage that they bring to "devour" as the menu says. our server was really nice, didn't mind at all that we were only getting appetizers, and had good drink suggestions (although the drinks are a little expensive).
anyways, i guess it just depends when you go. i advise everyone to go during lunch, or when they have specials. it is excellent food, and the value makes it even better. i've never had bad service there, but maybe i just have good luck as far as when i crave that spicy shrimp coconut soup;) surin west is my favorite thai place in birmingham, and i definitely recommend it to anyone!

horrible service. i want to start by saying i normally sit at the bar by myself, and the service there has always been good. i went in today with a friend and was absolutely in shock of how poor the dining room service was. the hostess seemed timid and scared of us, and was very quiet i am not sure if she even said hello.
we got our table and it was a little chilly so my friend went to get a coat (had to walk down the street) and the server was just getting to our table with water when my friend got back. i would say it was a good 10 minutes waiting on this guy, and he did not apologize for his absence, inquire as to whether or not we wanted drinks other than water, or even ask how we were.
he did ask if we wanted an appetizer, and i got one of the sushi specials (#2) which did arrive before our meal, probably because we didn't see the server again until he brought the sushi, which tasted good and was presented nicely. however, the server never came back to check on us. he brought the soup which was also good, no real complaints there other than once again not checking to see if our meal was going well.
now on to the main course, we had chicken masaman and thai bbq chicken, apparently this man cannot carry two plates without a tray, had to sit the tray on another table then transfer our plates one at a time, i don't know if this is a policy but it looks like you have servers that don't know how to carry plates, and had my friend saying "where is mine?" when he only sat my plate down and had to go retrieve my friends from the table behind us.
we had finished our soup and stacked the plates and bowls at the end of the table, and they were left there for the entirety of our meal, and once again the server did not check on us to see if the food was good...the food was good if anyone reading this was wondering...like the manager or owner for instance.
when we were finished and needing a go box i am pretty sure the manager, who was seating a table asked if we needed boxes, but he himself did not return with our boxes, instead we waited and waited and waited for our server. when he showed up he had a box and the check. i would harp on them for not offering desert but i had my money on the table because everything else took so long our hour lunch break had expired. i feel that i should also mention not a single dish got removed as we finished with them, at the end we were left with a mess of dirty dishes in front of us.
no one told us to have a nice day, thank you, or anything, either at the table when the check was dropped off or as we left the restaurant. i watched our server while waiting and waiting for service and he moves at a molasses pace, we were not the only table to be left waiting for, well, anything for a while after being sat, after agonizing over the tip and what to leave it was decided that pocket change of a few cents was all that was earned by this server...whose name appeared to be austin (which he didn't tell us, i looked on the check so i can make sure not to be served by him again.)

love the sushi!. every time i go here i not only look forward to the sushi, but to the coconut soup that is served before the meal. it is always consistently delicious. moreover, the sushi is some of the best around.

surin baskets!!!!. i love the surin baskets the most for an app. super crunch is always on the order and a piece of cheese cake. too many things to order i never know what to get. wish there was better parking in southside. can we park behind the building somewhere for takeout? i usually go to mountain brook location just for the sake of finding a place to park.

great deal for lunch. this is an excellent place for lunch. $7 menu, and $2 off if you get a uab coupon. the food is decent, but the service is horrible. don't plan to eat in an hour.

however, this is not thai food. the food is no way spicy or really flavorful. since when does thailand have sushi? anyway, it is not authentic thai!

terrible service. same tired staff. i still eat there for lunch a lot because the food is so good. i think they have the best sushi in town. they let you bring your own wine for a small cork fee, which is a nice touch.

consistent quality food. i have eaten at several different surin's in town and they are all consistent. i usually order the chicken noodle bowl for lunch (i wish they had this on the dinner menu). the egg rolls are crisp and the sweet sauce that comes with them is very tasty. the sushi is ok. not the best i've ever had but certainly not bad either. the duck is a good dish but very spicy. usually the service is very efficient and you can get in and out in under an hour,

worst service i've had in a long time. the wait was incredibly painful. our soup did not come up until 1 minute before our entrees, so we had to down the soup in order to start on our entrees. mine and my friend's sushi did not come up for 1 hour, then i had to cancel mine and he had to take his home. my other friend's second beer never came up.

i overheard the same sort of frustrations at tables around us.

i recommend you don't go here unless you've got nothing but time on your hands.  the current lunch  model doesn't work for people with 1 hour lunches.  you need at least 1.5 to eat here.

food is good, however.

food wasn't too bad. panang red curry was a nice combination of sweet and spicy. what they need is better service. our food came out in two waves with half the table having to wait to eat for the others to get their food. the coup de grace was when i received a back and lap full of curry when they were taking our plates. i did get an apology and a dessert offer however we were leaving. no offer to take my meal off the check or pay my dry cleaning bill. i will be heading to another one of birmingham's thai places now.
