in defense of surin west.... okay i see terrible reviews, but i have totally seen great reviews of restaurants and when i dined there, i hated it.
i am long overdue for this one, as my last 3 experiences at surin west were awesome! my boyfriend and i went for lunch one day (you get a free cup of soup with your entree). i love the spicy shrimp coconut soup. i'm always craving it about a week after i eat it. i've tried most of the lunch entrees, but the spicy beef salad gets me every time. the veges seem so fresh and the juices go so well with the salad. also, it's a great value because lunch is fairly cheap there, and the portions are excellent. my service that day wasn't over the top or anything, but i didn't feel like it was bad by any means.
my last visit to surin west was at dinner. we went to get 1/2 price appetizers (5:30 to 7 from tuesday through thurs i think), so this definitely led me to try some new things. my boyfriend loves the crab angels, and they were fantastic as usual. the eggrolls were good, nice and hot but nothing to write home about. obviously, i got a whole bowl of the soup and loved it. my favorite appetizer was the nam-sod. it's this delicious beef ground up with onions and peppers and all kinds of spices and you wrap it up in the cabbage that they bring to "devour" as the menu says. our server was really nice, didn't mind at all that we were only getting appetizers, and hadgooddrink suggestions (although the drinks are a little expensive).
anyways, i guess it just depends when you go. i advise everyone to go during lunch, or when they have specials. it is excellent food, and the value makes it even better. i've never had bad service there, but maybe i just havegoodluck as far as when i crave that spicy shrimp coconut soup;) surin west is my favorite thai place in birmingham, and i definitely recommend it to anyone!

horrible service. i want to start by saying i normally sit at the bar by myself, and the service there has always been good. i went in today with a friend and was absolutely in shock of how poor the dining room service was. the hostess seemed timid and scared of us, and was very quiet i am not sure if she even said hello.
we got our table and it was a little chilly so my friend went to get a coat (had to walk down the street) and the server was just getting to our table with water when my friend got back. i would say it was agood10 minutes waiting on this guy, and he did not apologize for his absence, inquire as to whether or not we wanted drinks other than water, or even ask how we were.
he did ask if we wanted an appetizer, and i got one of the sushi specials (#2) which did arrive before our meal, probably because we didn't see the server again until he brought the sushi, which tastedgoodand was presented nicely. however, the server never came back to check on us. he brought the soup which was also good, no real complaints there other than once again not checking to see if our meal was going well.
now on to the main course, we had chicken masaman and thai bbq chicken, apparently this man cannot carry two plates without a tray, had to sit the tray on another table then transfer our plates one at a time, i don't know if this is a policy but it looks like you have servers that don't know how to carry plates, and had my friend saying "where is mine?" when he only sat my plate down and had to go retrieve my friends from the table behind us.
we had finished our soup and stacked the plates and bowls at the end of the table, and they were left there for the entirety of our meal, and once again the server did not check on us to see if the food was good...the food wasgoodif anyone reading this was wondering...like the manager or owner for instance.
when we were finished and needing a go box i am pretty sure the manager, who was seating a table asked if we needed boxes, but he himself did not return with our boxes, instead we waited and waited and waited for our server. when he showed up he had a box and the check. i would harp on them for not offering desert but i had my money on the table because everything else took so long our hour lunch break had expired. i feel that i should also mention not a single dish got removed as we finished with them, at the end we were left with a mess of dirty dishes in front of us.
no one told us to have a nice day, thank you, or anything, either at the table when the check was dropped off or as we left the restaurant. i watched our server while waiting and waiting for service and he moves at a molasses pace, we were not the only table to be left waiting for, well, anything for a while after being sat, after agonizing over the tip and what to leave it was decided that pocket change of a few cents was all that was earned by this server...whose name appeared to be austin (which he didn't tell us, i looked on the check so i can make sure not to be served by him again.)

consistent quality food. i have eaten at several different surin's in town and they are all consistent. i usually order the chicken noodle bowl for lunch (i wish they had this on the dinner menu). the egg rolls are crisp and the sweet sauce that comes with them is very tasty. the sushi is ok. not the best i've ever had but certainly not bad either. the duck is agooddish but very spicy. usually the service is very efficient and you can get in and out in under an hour,

disappointing and overpriced. this was the worst sushi i've ever had. even worse than the kind you buy at supermarkets. shrimp tasted old and the thai noodles were soupy and tasteless. really in disbelief this place hasgoodratings.

i was looking online for a place near me to go eat, being new to the city i don't no much. i saw this place and read some of the reviews for it, a few of the people had nothinggoodto say but there is always the downers out there so i desisted to try it and see for my self. wow, was this place good!! i don't know what some of the other reviews people said are talking about. i'm from a big city and this has a lot of authentic thai food, after talking with the manger he told me about the pad thai or thai noodle as they call it the pad prick and a few more on trays they had that where really good. the staff is was deferent but in agoodway they had their own style and didn't make me feel like i was being served by robots. all in all surin west just became a regular for me and i suggest anyone looking for agoodplace to eat should go here!

delicious. food - everything was really good. my friends ordered these little mini tortilla thingies that had some type of chicken, i think rice, a few bits of corn, and a little green leaf on top with some kind of extravagant sauce. it was an appetizer, but i have no idea what it was called. for my entree, i had the thai barbecue chicken. it was so good. the shrimp fried rice that comes with it is also very delish. the chicken is really big, but very worth it. i ate all of my rice first before eating the chicken, so i only tasted agoodpart of it. and boy was it good. it fell right off the bone, it wasn't try, and it was steaming hot.
service - i think my server's name was emily, something like that. she didn't even take much time to introduce herself, as my friend's and i saw that she had about four other tables to tend to. she was an alright server, not really a joy to have around. she sorta fake smiled a lot, but that's okay too. we're here just for the food, right? also, the seating it way too close together. it got hot so quickly, geez.

hot and fresh. we had thai bbq chicken with fried rice for lunch around 2:00 p.m. restaurant had very few patrons and those it did have looked a bit off-putting. the restaurant is in an old building and the interior doesn't look inviting. however, it seemed clean enough. parking on the street at that time was easy.
our waiter was certainly not friendly, but he wasn't rude, either. the chicken was tender, although it is not bbq in the sense that we are used to. accompanying dipping sauce and fried rice were good. there were no off odors or tastes, although i could not pick out any discernible flavors, either. it wasgoodand freshly cooked.
the fare is mediocre; not exciting, but not bad. i will admit that i need to get something that would give me a better taste of thai cuisine the next time i go.

terrible. i received a coupon for surin in the mail for a "buy one get one free" entree. i read the coupon front and back, or so i thought, and went to the 280 location to use it. the waiter let us know that it was for this location at five points. we thought it'd be worth the drive since we would be saving at least $17 (so we thought) so we decided to leave and go to this location to use it. after waiting 20 minutes and being seated we were told it is more like a $10 coupon. the worth of it was only for a $10 meal, and unfortunately there were no $10 meals i was interested in. since we drove all the way we decided to stay and have some sushi since i had heard this location was better than the 280 one. boy was i wrong.

the sushi was clearly left out for a while, and since we waited for about 30 minutes to get our food it was obvious that our waiter had just left it sitting out. he was rushing with us and it took also took forever for him to take our order. compared to the 280 location the fish was really "fishy". overall it just was not a pleasant experience.

i understand that print marketing has to be somewhat deceiving to pull customers in, but when its to the point that the customer is jumping through hoops to try to get a deal at one of their favorite restaurants and it turns out that no one can bend the rules a bit to let them use a little coupon, you have completely ruined that relationship with the customer.

i used to love surin 280 but will never eat at any surin location again because of this horrible experience. it doesn't matter howgoodof a duck curry you make, but unless someone fixes this situation for me i will never invest a dime in this business again.

spicy withgoodservice.. beef salad is the best on the menu, suggest you have them cool it down on the spices or you will leave with hot lips for sure. the sushi is fresh; i have been visiting this restaurants for 5 years. my first experience was in 2007 when on a business trip to birmingham. now, i live in this city and with a city with very limited thai food / asian food this restaurants serves some of the best. service levels aregoodand food comes out fast with a very limited wait time for a table. its agoodplace for a date as well.
