myself and my wife came here for lunch on the first day of our honeymoon after a long bumpy flight and what a find! the service was impeccable, a young gentleman was more than happy to give us perfect advise on what winery's were a must do and his input made our stay in launceston. the food wasgoodwe had a deconstructed caesar salad as well as the tempura fish of the day both of which were cooked very well and the tasmanian sparkling topped off everything. all in all a great experience and a must do when in launceston. thank you and we will be back!

fantastic! service from a pretty young crew very good. entrees tartare and a calamari dish. both great at $16 &$17 each.goodvalue. main duck and pork side of broccoli. don’t thing the cherry complimented the duck, felt a bit old fashioned to me. dessert was the standout dish. chocolate bavarois was amazing, salty, sweet and just perfect in every way.

i think this is a reallygoodrestaurant definitely worth visiting if you’re in launceston. the service was great and at the level of a fine dining restaurant but the ambience was comfortable. for starters, the hot smoked salmon churros, beef tartare and whipped cod roe were really good. for mains, the octopus pasta and the market fish (grilled) were also both great fresh flavourful dishes. definitely happy to come back again!

i have never given any restaurant such a low score until i dinned in this “popular & well-known” restaurant. it was a disappointing and unhappy experience, especially during the holiday trip.

i booked this restaurant because the pretty high score (4.7/5.0). the waitress guided us to the very back and corner of the restaurant which is just next to the bathroom. the weather temperature was 30 degrees, but it shouldn’t be high enough to make people get sweat. however, all the windows and the rear entrence door were closed, therefore this made people feel like be in a sauna house. actually the windows could be lifted to open to let the breeze in but the waitress didn’t provide this option to help us to solve the problem. we opened the window and other dinners around us actually said thank you and felt much cooler with the incoming breeze. but the above mentioned is not the only reason for me to give such a score.

because we still had an afternoon trip to do, hence we didn’t want to eat too much for lunch. i pointed on the menu and told to the waiter that i want to order the white fish and chips with curry mayo. he took the note and then asked my partner what he wanted. my partner said clearly that he would like to order the chips & curry mayo as the side but because i already ordered the main with the chips so he wouldn’t have that one.

but after all the waiting, what i got is totally different from what i ordered, i was provided the market fish with the slow roasted pumpkin. to be honest, this dish looked so nice and yum, and probably was much better than the fish and chips, but i didn’t touch it at all and told the waiter that i got the wrong dish. the waiter flicked through his order note pad & said your ordered the market fish, which to be honest is a little strange, considering i pointed to the dish on the actual menu. then i had to repeat all the conversations to make him aware he made mistake.

the kitchen took away the wrong dish and provided me the correct one ( please refer to the picture i posted with the review) that’s the reason to make me give 1/5 to this restaurant. as what you can see from the picture, there was only one piece of fried fish in this dish. but i saw the table next to us, they ordered the same dish but they had two pieces of fish! i couldn’t believe then i checked the food pictures posted by others on zomato. apparently two pieces of fish with the chips should be the “standard” qty in this dish.

i regret to see the kitchen obviously did this to make up the lose of the wrong dish provided, but who caused this is their staff who couldn’t take orders correctly. the value of being handed half of what should have been the standard meal as per menu serving, left me with a feeling of being targeted for my complaint, to pay the full amount but only got the half of the dish is a little bit ordinary in my view.

i believe the reason that the restaurant gets a high score of the customers reviews is not only because of the taste of the dishes but also part of them coming from the service andgoodhospitality. unfortunately, stillwater is short of one of the elements, which is a very important aspect of agoodrestaurant.

hospitality is one of the main industries in launceston, even the whole tas. hopefully, this kind of experience won’t happen again to anybody who decides to dine with them. however, i will never go back to this restaurant and would not recommend any of my friends to go there as well, which is a shame considering the view and the general decor of the restaurant is good.
tasmania is a beautiful place and i would suggest everyone to go there at least once if not several times.

stillwater, a contemporary tasmanian cuisine – titled one hat from thegoodfood guide 2018. during our stay in launceston we had the opportunity to try lunch and dinner at stillwater. lunch wasgood(4/5) but dinner topped it (5/5)! if it wasn’t because of our driver who recommended still water to us again for dinner, we would have left still water with 4/5 from our lunch experience. read more to see why…

housed in a refurbished old flour mill. came for breakfast as this was the closest to where we were staying. service is quitegoodand the food was amazing. the red bowl was the best but the others were at par. the omelette was a perfect fusion of western and asian cuisines.

the granola was divine. coffee was fabulous. strongly recommend this place.

my family and i were in launceston during the christmas break and really wanted to try this place after hearing all thegoodreviews. we had breakfast here. there wasn't a table for 5 available right away as the restaurant was packed. we had to wait for a bit and then was offered the bar table which we took anyway. the service was friendly and the food was super yummy. we had an enjoyable breakfast there and also had a look at the art gallery upstairs.

our visit to stillwater was so delightful. went there for lunch and we were delighted to be seated by the window overlooking water view on a clear sunny day. we ordered the fennel risotto and the crispy ocean trout with frekkeh. my risotto came perfectly cooked and tasted so good, it came with chunks of chorizo. my partner was having the ocean trout, the skin came slightly burnt but it was still acceptable. flavour wise it was good, he enjoyed the frekkeh texture.
reccomended for agoodlunch or dinner. love the ambiance and the place. would definitely visit when in launceston. another bonus is a lovely gourmet providore upstairs making the visit a complete rounded lovely experience.

the restaurant serves fantastic food in a relaxed setting by the water. our mains took 45 minutes to come out which was disappointing given the expectations we had based on reallygoodreviews. luckily the quality of the dishes was high. the chocolate meringue with coffee cream was the star of the show!

okay so this is the fancy place if you want to come for a big dinner to celebrate your tasmanian achievements (school, work promotion, birthday, anniversary).
you can look over the river which generally contains silt so many locals find this to be a talking point here at stillwater. or should i say siltwater?
last time i came here the waiter was very big on stressing that there was chocolate dirt in my dessert.

have insider info that the service staff here are expected to be held to a very high standard and they sure are, but it's a bit overbearing sometimes. this information has spoiled the siltwater experience for me, because i feel like i can see the stress in some of the waiters' eyes. keep up thegoodwork, waiters. boss? chill out.

the food isgoodfor tassie standards (you have meats, vegetarian. etc) but these days tassie has raised the foodie bar so stillwater may have to get off its laurels and get into action. this place will probably always have an old money clientele that are loyal to the (chocolate) soil, anyway. so i don't see much likelihood that they will shake themselves into action.

i would not come here unless someone else was paying... can't see that happenning any tim e soon

came for breakfast which was very tasty, however i think the extra $5 they whack on to each meal due to the pedigree of the restaurant is a bit uncool. service was fine and friendly and food was tasty, but just asgoodas the other breakfasts we had in launceston

our tasmanian travels came full circle in january as we arrived back in launceston after a whirlwind food trek to the (a rather smokey) north, centre and south of the island. this lovely river-city is home to the stillwater restaurant. the restaurant is located inside the historic ritchie’s [flour] mill constructed in the 1830s and on the bank of the tamar river. this day was sunny, warm with a hint of smoke from the tasmania fires started by lightning strikes the week before.  we arrive at the beautifully restored mill and easily find a park. we are greeted by the friendly start and migrate to the centre of the restaurant where we could view the original timber rafters and the river.  it’s agoodstart.
