sad. such a disappointment. after being a patron for over thirty years when ever my wife and were in town we thought when we moved here eighteen months ago there was at least one good and consistent place we liked to eat at. we love chinese food and have eaten at chinese restaurants up and down the coast and all over b.c. and alberta. the silver dragon was always near the top of ouur favorites.
the last three visits have been plagued with awful service and inconsistent food.
the singapore noodles, a standard dish, all of a sudden was a mixture of spicy noodles and noodle totally void of any spice. about half and half.
their beef tenderloin, which i believe is some of the best anywhere, was really good as usual but we ate it at at home as the waitress forgot to order it and then when it did arrive we had already finished the rest of the meal.
the salt pork is not their best dish but is usually quite edible. again we never got the dish until we had finished the rest of the meal. the waitress has mixed our order with another.
as we paid the bill we were asked how everything was. when i told the man he just looked off into space and ignored us until we left.
i don't know, anymore, if i would advise people to go there. their peking pork has always been my wife's favorite while i preferred their palace style chicken. the singapore noodles had always been a mutual love until the last few times. their soups have been consistently excellent. almost anything on the menu has been so good over the years, but, the way we have been treated and served the last three times we ate there has turned us to search for somewhere else to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!again they still expected a tip for the service and food. if tipping is mandatory then raise the prices but don't expect extra for lousy performance.

brace for my sharing = ). for as long as i can remember since arriving in canada at the age of 8 years old; silver dragon has been serving calgarians, their families, and friends, for decades. although the stairs to their dining room no longer seem as long to me as when i was a child; i still gladly climb them in anticipation of the warm, friendly service, and of course the delicious food.

from dimsum with my grandparents to dinner with friends, volunteer appreciation events, galas and banquets; silver dragon has never failed to impress me with the high and honest standards they hold themselves to in providing a stellar dining experience.

try paying attention to how tentative and professional the employees are, and how accommodating the kitchen is in aligning with all requests and needs. i made a reservation to host oversea guests and upon taking my reservation they asked where my guests were from. from there, they proposed a custom menu with dishes appealing/ derived from the guests' native hometown. the result without say, impressed and warmed the hearts (and tummies) of my guests. this was an above and beyond gesture that silver dragon did not "have to do"_ but did.

indicative by the medals on the wall, and media coverage; the head chef has earned international accolades and still to this day cooks most dishes himself_ for over five decades. each and every member of silver dragon takes pride and holds themselves accountable for the experience they help provide. the gentle elderly lady you see helping top off your hot water (for tea) and clear your empty dishes is actually the chef's wife, and owner.

they are meticulous about ensuring no details are overlooked and graciously embrace improvement opportunities shared with them. they are quick to "fix" and put to action what is required/ brought to their attention.

if i am unable to dine-in, i will order take out. the last time i placed an order was on the night of superbowl and just through the packing of the food, i can tell silver dragon wanted to quality ensure not only the food, but our enjoyment of it (sauces separately, etc.) even if remotely. ... it's all in the details = )

needless to say, i really enjoy eating at silver dragon and continuously recommend it to everyone.

now in case you wondered ... i should stress that i do not in any way, shape or form, own any shares or am employed by them = )
just truly and genuinely wanted to share with you, goods eats and a gem in yyc.

happy eating, and cheers!

good and bad.... silver dragon was a rather good restaurant that everyone in my family enjoyed. we especially enjoyed their crispy rice and ginger beef, that i personally enjoyed with a chawan of jasmine tea. yet the one thing my grandmother fondly remembers is having all of the family members sit around the large tables, and enjoy a good meal with socialization. yet i find that the food has gone down hill, which is saddening. even the family members who haven't had the food from the restaurant have stated that it isn't the best. the service also varies between waiters, but overall it is okay in terms of service.

went for dim sum and really enjoyed it. food presented as fresh and flavourful. staff was extremely attentive; which i had been worried about from previous reviews. we were seated in the room beside the main dining room. the only odd thing was that our section was completely caucasian and the main dining room was primarily asian.
would def return.

the service was awful and food was only ok! first the old guy that took our order repeated it so many times it was like he was teaching it to us, then we were served appetizer which took a minute to eat and we sat and waited for 45 mins for our main to be told it would be two minutes after we asked if it was coming! it was about another 5! then they got one of the dishes wrong, then some other guy came and said we shud have asked for it the way we wanted it and we said we did! then he went to one of our waiters and gave out to him! then the guy came and apologized , then we got the dish as we had ordered just as we had finished our mains and didn't really want it! it looked worse than the first time they had brought it!and then ten minutes later they collected the dishes and brought the bill and did not even ask if we wanted dessert, won't be going there again!

on par, very expensive thou. this place has good chinese food, it is more westernize allowing them to charge more. this place is good for small family dinners, but fail during large events, i have had events here with 15+ tables and they are not equipped nor properly managed to hold events like that. the dim sum is the same stuff you can pick up in the stores beside them and make them fresh at home.

vegan friendly my flaming arse. this place, vegan friendly? biggest joke of the century. came here for a business lunch and it was difficult finding anything without pork in it, let alone meat. want to ask the the servers what doesn't have meat? good luck with trying to communicate your dietary requirements. if you're someone who can't/doesn't eat meat or pork, well you might as well not eat when you come here.

when i saw egg fried rice, i lit up. "oh, there's something a vegetarian can eat!". nope, even the bloody egg fried rice has pork bits. seriously, what's with these people and pork?

my meal for the afternoon ended up being fried broccoli and tea. who wants to waste their time and money eating fried broccoli for lunch? the broccoli was probably fried in the same disgusting pork oil, but i decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and ate it - mostly out of starvation actually.

sometimes i eat seafood, shrimp especially. not an option here - even their shrimp comes covered in more pork! pork and shrimp, the perfect combination. it must be a good idea to put pork on anything edible. i'm surprised there wasn't pork covered ice cream for dessert.

if you like eating creatures that eat their own feces and dead children, then the silver pig is the place for you. welcome to the pork heaven of calgary and anathema to all vegetarians, vegans, jews, and muslims.

.... please somebody please tell how these guys keep winning consumer awards..... cold over priced dim sum. the resturant was half full during middle if lunch hour......anyone want to tell me where to find good dim sum dt???....extremely poor value for dumbed down cantonese cuisine. this resturant is all hype with decor, complete with consumer award and a medal. once you climb and steep stairs you see a nicely decorated resturant and all the waiters are in the traditional uniforms. but everything stops there. as for being an authentic chinese resturant i would say it has really dumbed down its dishes. almond chicken $ 14.75 was a thick piece of chicken breast pounded out with a thick greasy batter on a bed of shredded lettuce. the chicken taste bland. the sauce was bland and im not really sure they used almonds as a topping. it was powdery and indistinguishable. stuffed tofu 15.95 was tofu with a small dallop of shrimp paste on top of the tofu. bland....tasted more like the pan. it was the exact display and taste for steamed fish with the soy sauce base. special fried rice 11.25 was rice with egg and few shrimp and chai sui small and nothing to write home about. also blahsah. pork loin 15.25 also small and warm to cool and bland with a number of fatty pork pieces. since the rice was so small we had to add a bowl of steamed rice $2. the wait for this wonderous meal was 40 min in a half full resturant. everything came at once and it was luke warm. the service was hostile and barely there. we never saw our waitress but as soon as cash was brought out she decended upon us like vulture in lightening speed. she never asked how the food is because even if you tell them. i am sure they don't give two hoots. i would never return to this overpriced joint. the food speaks volumes. if you have cash to burn and don't mind bland food you should come here.

meh. overpriced dishes that were pushed around and around. no wonder there were so few people.

i had gone there last week for the very first time after reviewing this location. i had no idea how to order or what was going on. we waited a while till we asked for the menu because we have never had dim sum. it was a bit confusing at first , but the our server was very rude and the customer service sucked !! he decided to be nice when we were done eating and about to pay, it's a nice place but the service is horrible.

i was there for my son's birthday dinner
we ordered 6 dish and one of them just look like it has been sitting on someone else table for long time.
horrible experience !!
that is not the end
when we pay the bill on our table, we put one 10 bill as a tip in the middle of the table.
the waitress who is in 50's (lolls like)brought handheld wireless debit machine and she was watching me while i am paying the bill include my pin number and tip amount. of course i put "0" for tip since i left ten dolor bill on the table and all of sudden she was almost yelling at me
"why you don't tip me"?
we explained and show her that ten dollar bill on the table and she just yanked it from the table and gone without any apology !!
horrible service
it was just ridiculous and couldn't believe my eyes and ear
never going to go there again
as soon as golden inn reopen, i will go there as usual!
