silver dragon restaurant

i have a few coworkers that really like dim sum at silver dragon in chinatown...o i thought it was about time i gave them another shot – but for dim sum instead of dinner...i love this place as it’s a good traditional place. they give you a stamp card and they stamp the price range of the dish you order, and they actually come around in carts. my modern places give you a menu and you select what you want to eat, and it’s not traditional at all. so, once the first few carts came by, our table was filled.

love it here!. i have been going to silver dragon for over ten years and i still think it is authentic and delicious. some of the staff struggle with english, but i've always been able to get any requests. it might be pricier than other restaurants, but it is consistent and fresh, which is all that matters to me. the place is usually packed with a lineup at the door, so it appears as though others feel the same way. there are so many great places to eat in calgary, with few that i return to time and time again; however, silver dragon is one place i'll never stray from.

wow massive expensive. ordered ginger beef, salt and pepper squid and a small wonton soup.... 56$. no rice no nothing. not including delivery.... out too lunch.....

terrible food. i just ordered $140 of food and the only thing that was edible was the wonton soup, the chowmein was crunchy but also mushy, the seafood was overcooked and too chewy rice was overcooked, won't order from here ever again.

worst service and after manager got mad because of low tip. today i went to silver dragon with my few friends for my friends fair well party. when i ordered my food and mentioned that i am alergic to egg, the server said ya...ya...ok but i received my order with egg sitting on the top. i asked him to replace the order and server got so mad at me and told me that i just asked him for one itemisinstead of both. i was shocked that because if im alergic, how could eat egg in second item. he replaced my food but never came back to ask anything. after the food we asked for bill and he on the pin pad he just me the the options to pay 20%,22% or 30%. i asked him to enter my amount only so i can pick the tip options. i decided to pay only 10% tip. server start taking to manager in chinese n in few minutes manager came to my table and embraced me in front of everyone for low tip. wow...i was shocked because so many other customers start looking at me.

high price, hawking for tips, horrible service. visiting from edmonton, hoping to get some good chinese food for dinner with the family.

but the food was not up to par with the nicely designed restaurant.

we had ordered a steamed rock cod, but when it came our, the fish was clearly not fresh, and definitely from frozen.
the teppan chicken we ordered should sizzle like other places but the chicken was luke warm from a plastic bowl transferred onto a cold black plate.

and at the end, my god.

he took our card and put it into the machine. then he hawked over my mother as she got to the tip screen. he was incredibly pushy with the tips. and my mother gave it to me across the table.
it doesn't take a genius to choose 12, 15 or 20% tip. or choose other.

he even stuck around when i typed in the pin.

pressured to tip? waiting for dishes to be cleared or tea to be refilled. i don't believe a tip should even be considered. even then, the host would clearly check up on the whole caucasian group beside is and only came to us to grab our order.

seriously. the food is not good and even if it's all fancy, the dessert is from a can. for high quality price, you don't get high quality food.

beware of the other reviews for this place. the horrible service is real.

things aside, they did have good fish maw soup and sizzling rice with vegetable sauce.

really, really bad service!. we were going on a family trip to banff and decided to call and make reservations at the restaurant for 14 people. this was done 4 days in advance. on the day of, we reach the restaurant 10 mins ahead of time, only to find out, they had not set aside a table for us. after 10 mins, the hostess comes up to us and tells us that there are 2 tables for us, but they are separate. when we tell her, that the whole family wants to sit together, she starts waving and gesticulating wildly, and tell us to get lost. finally, another gentleman comes up to and tells us they are putting together 2 tables for us. later on when we were seated, the filled a wrong order of prawns for us. so we told them the order was wrong, but since we had already eaten 2 prawns from it, they first refused to replace it with the right order, and when they finally did agree, it was only on the condition that they give us 2 prawns less! i don't think i have ever heard that anywhere. the staff were really rude and stingy to a point where it was absurd! i really don't think they should be in the service industry at all. the food was pretty mediocre. probably never going to go back there again..

worse place ever for food and service, avoid at all cost!!!. it is simply the worse place ever for both food and service. it is pretty rare for a place to excel so badly at both at the same time.

the waiters are just simply rude. i am chinese and they are just rude and spoke very little mandarin chinese and english. the dishes are terrible, not edible by any standard. when asked, the waiter simply replied " this is not calgary !"

the worse of all is, the waiters add the tips themselves !! without asking first. i went with a group of 3. no service during a non busy time. with no service given, they think they deserve 15%. total crooks.

i should guessed when i first walked in when i noticed that the place is empty despite the fact it being the only chinese restaurant in banff.

the comments below for the positive reviews are fake by the staffs/owner, i am an actual dinner from 3 days ago. i will advise as many people as possible in my work and my social circle about this horribly managed place.

advice for the owner: change your chiefs and fire all the waiters and change your management asap !!!!

i come from a chinese heritage and we've always gone to silver dragon. dim sum is one of our favourite treats and it wouldn't be the same anywhere else. it almost always busy when we go so you can tell by the hustle and bustle that it's great

good food. first visit was a good one. quick tasty and lacking the usual heaps of msg.
price is good for banff as well.

some of the best chinese dishes in town. delivery service is inconsistent and the guy taking orders clearly doesn't want that business because he's usually telling you it will take 2 hours. sometimes he puts me on hold and hangs up. are you doing delivery business or not?

dim sum good but long wait for a table. a very long wait for a table and having people waiting on the stairs is dangerous and awkward. they might be better off having people waiting downstairs and having a mic system ... i don't know... it was too hard for us to wait b=with a baby, 4 adults and 2 kids on the stairs so one person waited and the rest of us went for a walk... only problem then is that they wanted everyone there to be seated

dim sum was tasty and variety was good. only complaint is that they use dark soy sauce to serve to customers and i prefer light soy sauce. (very minor complaint)

perfect. i'm not sure why anyone wouldn't be happy here. perhaps they don't understand premium chinese food.

all ingredients used are high quality. every dish i've ever had is perfectly done. i've been going since i was a child, and will never forget this place.

the hot & sour soup is perfect.

the price is worth it for what you get.

also, try something different here. they have such a large assortment of dishes. there literally is something for everyone.

awesome!!. great food and worth the price. premium chinese food. every time i come to banff i eat there.

also, the one in calgary is amaaaazing.

what an awesome dim sum experience! excellent variety, all the things you would expect to see and even some you might not. from my previous experience the service here is better than most and one waitress went our of her way to search for one dish we really wanted, only to turn up apologetic and empty handed, not to be beaten she showed up five minutes later with it, she hadn't forgotten! you are sure to be impressed!
