a group of 11 of us dined here for a friends birthday, i was really looking forward to it, as i hadn't been there before. we arrived at about 7.30, it took a really really long time for them to get our orders, to be fair, we were so busy chatting we didnt really notice though. the food arrived at around 9.30, and was utterly delicious, i had the pan fried grouper, it was just beautiful. the food was not the problem. we constantly had to ask the wait staff to show us menus, or catch their attention to order drinks, we did not have a dedicated wait person, and there seemed to be absolutely no coordination between the staff.
simon gault brought out a dessert platter personally for our friend which was wonderful, but no one brought us dessert menus, we finally waved down someone, and ordered dessert, but after 30mins, i had to go, so cancelled my dessert.
at the counter, the bill was $950, so not sure how they came up with that, when the real total was less than half of that.
simon gault apologised personally for the stuff up, which was appreciated, but i felt like these continuous mistakes and chaos on the floor really ruined my friends birthday.
it was like it was their opening night, i expected much more.

after being turned away from crab shack as it was packed with a half hour wait, my friend and i with two babies in prams headed to shed 5 on a whim. had no idea what kind of restaurant we had walked into, but realised right away that this was no casual dining like the crab shack. we just wanted a quick but tasty small meal before the saints game. i was very impressed with how accommodating the staff were considering this was no place for two mammas and their big bulky prams and two babies under 5 months. we shared a few entrees and it was lovely. i will be back for a full meal with my partner minus the baby.

we booked into shed 5 for our wedding anniversary, as apart from being the few top restaurants being open on a monday night, our previous lunch dinning experience last year was very good. we were greeted and seated with an introduction from our waitress who was looking after us for the night. service was impeccable. starters of oyster kirkpatrick was as described with a very tasty grilled topping, venison cutlet was nicely finished and plentiful for an entrée. the duck and ox tongue was initially disappointing as we couldn't find the tongue, when we approached the waiter he advised he would look into it, our waitress then arrived and advised it would be under the duck, under closer examination it was not there at all, the waitress apologised and arrived with an extra portion of ox tongue which was very flavoursome, although the juices from the duck would have completed it nicely. the pork was average a little on the tough side and no crackling but abundance of fat. after finishing a sparkling water with our wine the waitress took the empty bottle away and replace with a fresh one, at $9-00 a bottle it would have been courteous to ask if we required another bottle rather than just deliver it to the table. we shared a dessert of home made ice cream and profiteroles which were a lovely finish.
overall a nice dining experience apart from the main initially being incomplete which you would not expect from this class of restaurant. the price was good value for money and no hesitation in going back for lunch or dinner.

overlooking the stunning wellington harbour, shed 5 occupies a historic building which is now wellington’s premier seafood restaurant. when i recently returned for a trip to visit my friends in the city i used to call home, we dined at this luxurious waterfront restaurant and had an incredible dining experience!

the four of us arrived on a monday evening around 8pm to a busy restaurant & bar and warm, lively atmosphere. the restaurant is incredibly spacious, with decor of dark wooden beams and crisp white tablecloths creating a beautiful, classic look, and large windows showing off the gorgeous views of the harbour.

we were seated by a waitress who was friendly, attentive and patient all night long, and more than happy to explain & elaborate on menu choices for us and to share what was on offer. we started with wines before ordering our mains – mine a sparkling rosé.

because shed 5 specialise in seafood, much of their menu is seasonal. one of my friends and i chose the same main, salmon fillet, but with two different sides: 01. with roasted moroccan carrot & chick pea salad / fried halloumi / dates / coriander / lemon vinaigrette / garlic & herb labneh / spiced tomato mascarpone, and 02. with calamari & warmed nicoise salad – green beans / potato / tomato / olive / soft egg / shallot vinaigrette / anchovy & caper butter. i have to say my main was absolutely delicious! i loved the crispy skin of the salmon and juicy, succulent meat and every part of the side, but especially how the crispy halloumi and sweet, chewy dates complemented it.

my dessert was lime & coconut panna cotta with pineapple & macadamia toffee crumble, fruit salad, mango lassi foam and textures of passion fruit. it was wonderfully flavoured: sweet, but balanced with a creative combination of complementing flavours & textures. not to mentioned aesthetically presented!

we shared our food amongst the group, including my friend’s entree, half a dozen oysters, which were extremely fresh, clean, crisp & succulent, and my friend’s tuna main which was all our favourite of the night. he also ordered dessert with me, a summer berry trifle, which unlike my dessert was sweet but rich complemented by the tangy taste of strawberry, raspberry & blackberry.

overall, it was a very memorable dinner at shed 5. coupled with my first dinner in wellington in a year, shed 5 made this dinner extra special with their impeccable customer service, welcoming character and of course, amazing & skilfully made cuisine. i’d highly recommend shed 5 if you are looking for a glamorous dinner with some of the best seafood you’ll ever experience.

salmon fillet $31.50 (x2)

duck risotto $37

summer berry trifle $16.50

lime & coconut panna cotta $16.50

prices excluded: our wines, tuna, half dozen oysters

my friends and decided to have fine dining there instead of going to the crab shack because they provide truly fresh seafood. the food quality is really high. we had salmon and king fish cooked with puree and cheese. they tasted amazing. but the entree did not worth the price given its too salty flavor.

came here during the beginning of march during our trip down to wellington.
the service was lovely - although there were a little too many flies in the bar which really needed to be dealt with. there was also quite a long wait time for the food, although the waitress did reassure us that the food would be out soon.
we ordered the eye filet and the pork schnitzel, i loved the pork chop, and thought the apple slaw was very refreshing in contrast with the hearty pork.
the eye filet was good, however, was unsure with the pairing with the kumara underneath - it didn’t seem to have the refreshing feeling that the apple slaw had for the pork.

overall enjoyed the experience here, would love to come back if i’m down in wellington sometime again.

it is an old shed and i was welcomed with friendly smiles which is why the five stars. the food was average. i had a risotto, the seafood was surely fresh but the rice were mushy, the plating was a little rough for this fine dining restaurant.

came here for lunch and it was ok. i didn’t really know what to order as there didn’t seem to be dishes that were mid size. so i got the whitebait fritters. i’m not a fan of asparagus but that wasn’t their fault. lovely restaurant though with nice vibes and setting.

a star for the food quality, but actually it worths half if i can give, tastes are common but not the price. another star for the environment, maybe that’s the reason why the prices are not so adorable, we pay for atmosphere but not the food. the last star for the services even though the speed of serving was slow.

had a lovely dinner at popular shed 5. the scallops were small and delicate, the tuna with wontons were delicious- the wontons should be offered as a side dish - they were fantastic. oysters are always a winner.the chowder is a good portion for a starter. def recommend the choc cake & pear & ginger dessert.

beautifully located seafood restaurant in the heart of wellington’s waterfront.

great wine list: super range across price and style. we had a good local chardonnay and a glass of pinot noir with the cheese plate.

initially disappointed with the limited lunch menu, but the oysters were sublime, and tuna salad was great. the ceviche was ok, probably needed a little more finesse with the knife and a more acidic flavour. calamari was ok. vegetables were a bit ott: greens with soggy bacon and really strong blue cheese crumb.

the cheese plate was fantastic: a really good (and amusing) menu, beautiful presentation and incredible cheese. even the cheese to biscuit ratio was perfect: which is extremely rare.

service was solid, but staff didn’t really seem able to explain the dishes they put down.

i would go back for dinner to try the market fish.
