schneider's german gasthaus & bier garten

awesome staff. we called the day before to make a reservation for 10 people. since it was going to be a holiday (cinco de mayo), we wanted to be sure they would have the room. when we arrived they had out table ready for us. we had the very best waiter. his name was nick. he knew the menu like the back of his hand. with the liqour flowing we bacame a loud bunch, he not only took our order and put up with us, he also joined in on the fun. i can;t say enough good things about this restaurant. we have been coming here for over a year now and we have never been disappointed. if you don't mind waiting awhile for real home cooked german food, this is the place to go. theserviceand food are always a treat . keep up the awesome work.

we made reservations for 10 on a wednesday night.  our table was mot  ready.  we had to put 3 tables together ourselves and find chairs .  theservicewas the worst and when we paid the bill they automatically charged 18% gratuity because there were more than 6 people.  i thought a tip was suppose to be  for good service.    they served our salads 1 min before the meal arrived.  the server was never around.  1 person in our group had his meal served minus the meat because it was not ready till we were almost all finished our meal.  he was not happy.  the server was never near unless we went looking for her but guess what she new she was getting 18% so why give goodservice!!!
the food however was good.  they were  not busy that night so no excuse for bad service.  we will not return as there are many choice places to eat in the mcallen area.

what a surprise to find this gem in mcallen! authentic german food by the border of mexico!. this is kind of hard to find for its tucked away and the google map system is wrong. if you want to meet a lot of winter texans, this is the place to come. everything fromserviceto the atmosphere could rival anything in new braunfels or fredericksburg texas. schnitzel done right,spatzel done right. would come back if i visit mcallen again.

i sat at the bar eating rouladen, drinking a franziskaner, and talking to ursula one of the owners. don't expect the prettiest restaurant just expect friendlyserviceand outstanding food.

the best place to eat like you mean it. this place is no joke. i went for the first time three weeks ago, finished my second visit two days ago. this place has amazing food and the waitress really knew how to pair the beers with the food. about the beer, they have an absolutely awesome heifeweizen and it you can order it in a liter size. personally, thats awesome, i hate having to order 2-3 beers during a meal, just give me the beer an call it a day!!!!!
also, about the whole discrimination thing, thats ridiculous. i'm about as dark as a guiness, so is my brother. we arent rich, we arent regulars, we just showed up and had some greatserviceall around. my last name is guzman, the owner came and personally asked how our meal was. classy, i wish i had more experiences like scheiders!!!!!! i will definitely be back.

authentic german food!!. not only is the restaurant jut like home, the food is absolutely delicious!! i have not had food like this since i was last home in germany visiting my family !! you have to try this restaurant , it is just simply perfect , great food, greatservice, and warm and welcoming place the minute you walk thru the door .we will be regulars !!! loved it !!!!!!!!!!!

after struggling for some time of what to make of my experience at schneider's, i cannot remark negatively about the restaurant or quality of food; however, there is ample room for improvement.

stepping into the 6 pm dinner rush, i found it a positive sign to see all but two tables free in the main hall; however, no reservation meant we were temporarily shuttled outside and ignored for a bit. a no-show reservation freed up a table and we were eventually seated. the waitstaff seemed concerned with only certain customers (and although i won't claim bias/hate crimes like other reviews); and thusserviceat our table lagged a bit.

the quality of food is remarkable; and demonstrates a comfort-style homemade menu that intrigues and satisfies most palates. the appetizer selection is sub par in terms of restaurant-quality and leans more on the side of bar food. the entree selection is not immensely varied but highlights german home-style cuisine. dessert--much like the entree selection is simple, traditional and homestyle.

jager schnitzel: nicely cooked pork; crisp exterior. what major food culture doesn't have a thinly pounded out meat, battered and pan fried? no complaints
german-style potatoes: at best mediocre roasted potatoes; could have stayed under the broiler a few more minutes.
red cabbage: nicely acidic bursting with tradition dried bay leaf flavor--and in my serving a large stem.
peach cobbler: unremarkable; i'm not sure why i expected fresh peaches; but still classic
german beer in large frosted glasses? yes, please!

overall my experience was not negative; yet certainly not positive. i see ample room for improvement and it is incredibly clear management is aware of/reads these reviews. would i ultimately return? perhaps--purely in order to break the boring food scene; not because i was amply impressed by the restaurant.

fustrated with the limited variety of restaurants in my area, i proposed to my family that we try something new for a change, to which they replied excitedly. i stumbled across schneider's and was immediately hooked on the fact that it wasn't the satme ol' stuff--it was german! i mean, how neato is that? schneider's is a very casual, down-to-earth kind of place. theserviceis superb! everyone is just kind and warm--so much so, that when my mother got cold, they offered her a blanket (we were sitting outside). if that's not thinking about your customers, i'm not sure what is. anyway, the food is delicious and cooked in such a way that it resembles the typical "grandmothers loving meals". i personally loved my chicken "cordon bleu". i would recommend this place to anyone who is tired of the same old stuff and just wants to taste something deliciously new.

loves it! i keep ordering the same thing because it's just so scrumptious! the jägerschnitzel. i also order a side of red cabbage. amazing! love german beer, spaten! owners are great! goodservicefrom wait staff. if you love hearty, homemade food you owe it to yourself to try them. german food is like comfort food, not too ethnic. seriously delicious!

great food.. love the food here. the jager schnitzel is awesome. i can't wait until it cools off so i can spend more time here. i do agree theservicehas left a bit to be desired in the past, but anyone with a business in the valley can attest, good help is hard to find. the owners have always been open to honest criticism and made right with us when there was a problem on one occasion we visited.

wow!. all you haters who are out there, i will do my best to combat you, you are just like high school bullies! schneider's is an awesome german restaurant with authentic, homemade food! if it is not your taste, leave the negative comments to yourself!

aweseome!!. seriously, if you want something different from mexican food, this is the place!!! the food is out of this world, the critics are crazy!! i had the best food and the bestservicein the rio grande valley!! haters!!! go to taco bell or burger king where you can have it your way!! if you want some awesome home cooked, fresh food, come visit schneider's!!

2 1/2 stars. my family and went to schenider's last friday and to be honest, i expected more. the food was ok, but theserviceleft a lot to be desired. there was a big party of about 20 people that was getting most of the waitresses' attention. after we sat down, we waited about 10 minutes before they brought us menus and took our drink order. on the plus side, the schnitzel and the red cabbage were very good. the spaetzle was ok, but under-seasoned. the beer was cold and it hit the spot. my son devoured the child's bratwurst plate and he said it was delicious. on the downside, some of the pan fried potatoes were overdone and slightly burned, the potato dumplings were too doughy, and theservicewas slow. although the prices were reasonable, i don't know if we'll be returning to schneider's anytime soon.

bad service. theserviceat schneider's was the worst i have ever had to put up with. some of the people in my party received their food and were finished before the rest of the people received theirs. i paid $33 for three draft beers, because when i food finally came i was not interested in holding the rest of the party up while they waited for me to eat. my recommendation is if you want german food in mcallen, set down until it passes. don"t go to schneider"s.
