excellentgermanfood and great service. this is a place we will return to again and again!! we ate in the beer garden where the music volume was just right, the lighting ample but subdued. while we ate we enjoyed watching some children dancing and playing. our waitress recommended a beer for my husband that he really liked. he had the beertrucker and loved it!! i had the schnitzel which was also very tasty. we shared the peach cobbler and are now miserably full but it was great!!

awesome staff. we called the day before to make a reservation for 10 people. since it was going to be a holiday (cinco de mayo), we wanted to be sure they would have the room. when we arrived they had out table ready for us. we had the very best waiter. his name was nick. he knew the menu like the back of his hand. with the liqour flowing we bacame a loud bunch, he not only took our order and put up with us, he also joined in on the fun. i can;t say enough good things about this restaurant. we have been coming here for over a year now and we have never been disappointed. if you don't mind waiting awhile for real home cookedgermanfood, this is the place to go. the service and food are always a treat . keep up the awesome work.

hidden gem. was in mcallen on business and found this place had good reviews on the "spoon". pulled into parking lot to be cautious on the short walk through an alley to get to the place. don't let this stop you - fantasticgermanfood and beer and all homemade. really nice setting and everyone was very friendly. portions were huge and the check was small. this will be a "must go" place if i ever make it back down (and they take amex).

what a surprise to find this gem in mcallen! authenticgermanfood by the border of mexico!. this is kind of hard to find for its tucked away and the google map system is wrong. if you want to meet a lot of winter texans, this is the place to come. everything from service to the atmosphere could rival anything in new braunfels or fredericksburg texas. schnitzel done right, spatzel done right. would come back if i visit mcallen again.

enter these coordinates into your gps. i have corrected this on urbanspoon

a friendly family-style meal. i visited schneider's for the first time last friday night, 8-16-13 at about 2020. there were several people there but it was not crowded or noisy. there were about five people sitting at the outdoor bar. there was some irish singer doing a good job of singing popular oldies.

i started off with a medium-dark beer suggested by the knowledgeable waiter. i didn't catch the name of it but it was not a strong, bitter beer, it was quite good actually and it was served in a foot tall glass.

i had the beertrucker steak ($14.50) which is a pork steak one inch thick and about six inches across covered with a dark beer gravy and onions. it was served on a hot oval-shaped cast iron skillet on a wood plank. the steak included a side dish covered with veggies. this was a full-sized plate; about half of it was fried potatoes with the skin on; very good, and there was at least three other veggies including shredded carrots, coleslaw, and thin cucumber slices in an oil and vinegar dressing that was very good. the coleslaw is made in thegermanstyle without mayonnaise. normally i never touch the slaw but this was good stuff and i ate it all.

i got to sample the apple strudel ($6.50) which is a piece about three inches wide and at least six inches long, it is covered with whipped cream and has vanilla ice cream on the side. it is enough for two people to share and it is not too sweet and quite good.

all food in their kitchen with the exception of sauerkraut is made from scratch if not every day, the day before depending on what type of food it is. according to hartmut, the local climate does not allow sauerkraut to be made properly here and it takes about two weeks to ferment. everything else is made fresh.

the house salad ($7.50) and the goulash ($10.50) looked very good. the goulash is cubed beef served in a large bowl with tomato-onion gravy.

the owners hartmut and ursula schneider come out to visit and are very friendly. they'll explain menu items to you and make recommendations. all our wait staff was friendly.

sitting outside here is more like visiting someone's home and hanging out with friends and family in the backyard and less like a traditional restaurant. the owners remember your name and treat you like close friends and family on your next visit.

they even had a friendly cat wandering around the yard!

this is a casual place worth visiting and i plan on trying out more of the menu; one of the schnitzels or the goulash on the next visit. i'll try the rest later!

after struggling for some time of what to make of my experience at schneider's, i cannot remark negatively about the restaurant or quality of food; however, there is ample room for improvement.

stepping into the 6 pm dinner rush, i found it a positive sign to see all but two tables free in the main hall; however, no reservation meant we were temporarily shuttled outside and ignored for a bit. a no-show reservation freed up a table and we were eventually seated. the waitstaff seemed concerned with only certain customers (and although i won't claim bias/hate crimes like other reviews); and thus service at our table lagged a bit.

the quality of food is remarkable; and demonstrates a comfort-style homemade menu that intrigues and satisfies most palates. the appetizer selection is sub par in terms of restaurant-quality and leans more on the side of bar food. the entree selection is not immensely varied but highlightsgermanhome-style cuisine. dessert--much like the entree selection is simple, traditional and homestyle.

jager schnitzel: nicely cooked pork; crisp exterior. what major food culture doesn't have a thinly pounded out meat, battered and pan fried? no complaints
german-style potatoes: at best mediocre roasted potatoes; could have stayed under the broiler a few more minutes.
red cabbage: nicely acidic bursting with tradition dried bay leaf flavor--and in my serving a large stem.
peach cobbler: unremarkable; i'm not sure why i expected fresh peaches; but still classic
german beer in large frosted glasses? yes, please!

overall my experience was not negative; yet certainly not positive. i see ample room for improvement and it is incredibly clear management is aware of/reads these reviews. would i ultimately return? perhaps--purely in order to break the boring food scene; not because i was amply impressed by the restaurant.

great food friendly atmosphere. for living in germany for 8 years my family and i found schneiders to be one of the most comforting restaurants here in the valley. we kept getting recommendations to try it out and we were very pleased with the service. their food is authenticgermanand delicious. their beer on tap is great. the wait staff is friendly and the owners are very welcoming. i would definitely keep going back and recommend people to do so as well. especially if you want to try something different to eat.

the white people get all the attention. i went to schneider'sgermangasthaus & beergarden today and as we walked into the place i was really excited to try something new. i'm latino and i really don't like mexican food, so this was going to be a real treat for me. we sat down in the empty restaurant. we were given menus and i asked for a glass of water. i was told that i would have to buy for bottled water because of something to do with lead in the water. so i ordered soda and my partner (he's half german) ordered a cup of coffee. he was really excited to be in a germain restaurant. as i reviewed the menu and was thinking about the choices and about the water i couldn't help but think to myself if there is lead in the pipes, what about the coffee and the tea? what about the food? we were told that they boil the water for the coffee and the tea, but boiling water that has lead only increases the levels of this toxin. my partner ordered some food i decided not to order any food because i already had a bad taste in my mouth. when a large group of older people came in they were promptly served their beverages and brought baskets of bread. i then decided to leave the restaurant because i felt severely discriminated against because of this. my partner joined me outside and told me that the waiter brought a basket of bread and butter to our table after i had left the restautant and he had stood up to leave. he returned my soda unopened and told the staff to cancel his order and paid for his single cup of coffee. i have never felt so ignored in all my years in the rgv. it seemed like they were bending over backwards to attend to all the white senior citizens and ignoring the mixed couple who got there before any of them showed up... by the way, we always tip way better than any winter texan when we receive good service.
