excellent german food and great service. this is aplacewe will return to again and again!! we ate in the beer garden where the music volume was just right, the lighting ample but subdued. while we ate we enjoyed watching some children dancing and playing. our waitress recommended a beer for my husband that he really liked. he had the beertrucker and loved it!! i had the schnitzel which was also very tasty. we shared the peach cobbler and are now miserably full but it was great!!

awesome staff. we called the day before to make a reservation for 10 people. since it was going to be a holiday (cinco de mayo), we wanted to be sure they would have the room. when we arrived they had out table ready for us. we had the very best waiter. his name was nick. he knew the menu like the back of his hand. with the liqour flowing we bacame a loud bunch, he not only took our order and put up with us, he also joined in on the fun. i can;t say enough good things about this restaurant. we have been coming here for over a year now and we have never been disappointed. if you don't mind waiting awhile for real home cooked german food, this is theplaceto go. the service and food are always a treat . keep up the awesome work.

hidden gem. was in mcallen on business and found thisplacehad good reviews on the "spoon". pulled into parking lot to be cautious on the short walk through an alley to get to the place. don't let this stop you - fantastic german food and beer and all homemade. really nice setting and everyone was very friendly. portions were huge and the check was small. this will be a "must go"placeif i ever make it back down (and they take amex).

what a surprise to find this gem in mcallen! authentic german food by the border of mexico!. this is kind of hard to find for its tucked away and the google map system is wrong. if you want to meet a lot of winter texans, this is theplaceto come. everything from service to the atmosphere could rival anything in new braunfels or fredericksburg texas. schnitzel done right, spatzel done right. would come back if i visit mcallen again.

enter these coordinates into your gps. i have corrected this on urbanspoon

a friendly family-style meal. i visited schneider's for the first time last friday night, 8-16-13 at about 2020. there were several people there but it was not crowded or noisy. there were about five people sitting at the outdoor bar. there was some irish singer doing a good job of singing popular oldies.

i started off with a medium-dark beer suggested by the knowledgeable waiter. i didn't catch the name of it but it was not a strong, bitter beer, it was quite good actually and it was served in a foot tall glass.

i had the beertrucker steak ($14.50) which is a pork steak one inch thick and about six inches across covered with a dark beer gravy and onions. it was served on a hot oval-shaped cast iron skillet on a wood plank. the steak included a side dish covered with veggies. this was a full-sized plate; about half of it was fried potatoes with the skin on; very good, and there was at least three other veggies including shredded carrots, coleslaw, and thin cucumber slices in an oil and vinegar dressing that was very good. the coleslaw is made in the german style without mayonnaise. normally i never touch the slaw but this was good stuff and i ate it all.

i got to sample the apple strudel ($6.50) which is a piece about three inches wide and at least six inches long, it is covered with whipped cream and has vanilla ice cream on the side. it is enough for two people to share and it is not too sweet and quite good.

all food in their kitchen with the exception of sauerkraut is made from scratch if not every day, the day before depending on what type of food it is. according to hartmut, the local climate does not allow sauerkraut to be made properly here and it takes about two weeks to ferment. everything else is made fresh.

the house salad ($7.50) and the goulash ($10.50) looked very good. the goulash is cubed beef served in a large bowl with tomato-onion gravy.

the owners hartmut and ursula schneider come out to visit and are very friendly. they'll explain menu items to you and make recommendations. all our wait staff was friendly.

sitting outside here is more like visiting someone's home and hanging out with friends and family in the backyard and less like a traditional restaurant. the owners remember your name and treat you like close friends and family on your next visit.

they even had a friendly cat wandering around the yard!

this is a casualplaceworth visiting and i plan on trying out more of the menu; one of the schnitzels or the goulash on the next visit. i'll try the rest later!

the bestplaceto eat like you mean it. thisplaceis no joke. i went for the first time three weeks ago, finished my second visit two days ago. thisplacehas amazing food and the waitress really knew how to pair the beers with the food. about the beer, they have an absolutely awesome heifeweizen and it you can order it in a liter size. personally, thats awesome, i hate having to order 2-3 beers during a meal, just give me the beer an call it a day!!!!!
also, about the whole discrimination thing, thats ridiculous. i'm about as dark as a guiness, so is my brother. we arent rich, we arent regulars, we just showed up and had some great service all around. my last name is guzman, the owner came and personally asked how our meal was. classy, i wish i had more experiences like scheiders!!!!!! i will definitely be back.

what a mess!. four of us went to eat. we ordered an appetizer. then ordered our meals. after a while, i was told that they did not have the item i ordered and i had to change my order, so i did. then all the food came out except for mine. the waiter said it should be ready soon. i watched everyone else eat. the waiter stopped by and assured me that mine would be there soon. my wife finished her food. the waiter came by and assured us that mine would be there soon. the other couple finished their food. the waiter came by and apologized again. he said that when he changed the order, nobody in the kitchen prepared it, so they were just starting it. he said that we would get a free meal because of the mess up. mine finally came. at the end we asked for a couple of desserts instead of a free meal. the manager came by. the manager was rude and stated that when you come to eat at a restaurant that cooks its food fresh, you have to expect these things to happen. absolutely no apology in any way and let us know that this is just the way it is at this restaurant. we will never go back to aplacethat believes it is okay for one person to sit and watch the rest of the party eat and then have them sit and watch the last person eat. the kitchen obviously messed up this time, but the manager refused to acknowledge that. such a shame to have the manager turn a simple error into a major issue that lost a customer.

read about the 2.50 surcharge for sharing on here after getting excited about the great reviews. decided to call and confirm in case its a disgruntled customer lying. the employee who answered confirmed that it is a surcharge added to a regular entree if you decide to share. it isn't a larger plate mind you just because you share, i've worked in the restaraunt and bar business for over a decade and this is one of the dirtiest tricks i've ever heard of, and i've worked in some sneaky places. there is no reason for this other than to scam you out of money for not spending more money, this sounds like gentlemens clubs that require a drink minimum, but at least there your paying for an actual drink! not just because. anyways just a warning to others scroll all the way down and read the other reviews. a customer should never have to pay extra for nothing, dunno if in germany this is standard but this is america and here we don't charge extra just because your friend, kid, or significant other wants to taste your dish that's effing retarded! they aren't getting my business, i hope they shape up or they won't be in business too long. i just hope the water and discrimination other reviewers mentioned isn't true because otherwise thisplaceshould be shutdown on that alone. besides i'm sure they could not operate with lead in the water that's not fppd safe since you use water to cook and clean and the places nearby don't have this problem....just more suspicion of bad business....

the white people get all the attention. i went to schneider's german gasthaus & beergarden today and as we walked into theplacei was really excited to try something new. i'm latino and i really don't like mexican food, so this was going to be a real treat for me. we sat down in the empty restaurant. we were given menus and i asked for a glass of water. i was told that i would have to buy for bottled water because of something to do with lead in the water. so i ordered soda and my partner (he's half german) ordered a cup of coffee. he was really excited to be in a germain restaurant. as i reviewed the menu and was thinking about the choices and about the water i couldn't help but think to myself if there is lead in the pipes, what about the coffee and the tea? what about the food? we were told that they boil the water for the coffee and the tea, but boiling water that has lead only increases the levels of this toxin. my partner ordered some food i decided not to order any food because i already had a bad taste in my mouth. when a large group of older people came in they were promptly served their beverages and brought baskets of bread. i then decided to leave the restaurant because i felt severely discriminated against because of this. my partner joined me outside and told me that the waiter brought a basket of bread and butter to our table after i had left the restautant and he had stood up to leave. he returned my soda unopened and told the staff to cancel his order and paid for his single cup of coffee. i have never felt so ignored in all my years in the rgv. it seemed like they were bending over backwards to attend to all the white senior citizens and ignoring the mixed couple who got there before any of them showed up... by the way, we always tip way better than any winter texan when we receive good service.

fustrated with the limited variety of restaurants in my area, i proposed to my family that we try something new for a change, to which they replied excitedly. i stumbled across schneider's and was immediately hooked on the fact that it wasn't the satme ol' stuff--it was german! i mean, how neato is that? schneider's is a very casual, down-to-earth kind of place. the service is superb! everyone is just kind and warm--so much so, that when my mother got cold, they offered her a blanket (we were sitting outside). if that's not thinking about your customers, i'm not sure what is. anyway, the food is delicious and cooked in such a way that it resembles the typical "grandmothers loving meals". i personally loved my chicken "cordon bleu". i would recommend thisplaceto anyone who is tired of the same old stuff and just wants to taste something deliciously new.

amazing!. amazingly delicious food, great service, the beer was flowing good, and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the other patrons. owners are sweet people who talk to all the bar customers like they are family, very 'warm feeling inside'placeto be. @ badservice, that happens anywhere you go, and there was probably a simple kitchen mistake made...with a user name like "badservice", you sound like the type to complain about everyplaceto eat at. ignore the negative nancys, thisplaceis exactly what the valley needed!
