customet. 30 people from our park, alamo. palms, went to yourrestaurantlast night, sat mar 28. we had made reservations. 2 out of 28 got your special as you were out at 6:30. the poorly seasoned food was way overpriced for pork and medium portions. i would never come back for your not seasoned pork and cold bratwurst. i don't know anyone f tom our park who was happy with the food and service. only good thing was the beer.

as a follow-up toy comment about not offering tap water. (not tab water) it was the waiter at therestaurantwho told us about the lead in the pipes and the so-called requirement by the city of mcallen requiring boiling of the water. now i understand just how stingy the owner of thisrestaurantreally is and i feel almost bad for their tiny narrow minds.

no tap water?. when we arrived we were the only patrons in the house, we chose our seats and were given menus. i noticed that soda was $2.50 and they only serve bottled water. they do not serve tap water because the city of mccallen told them they could not serve tap water due to high levels of lead in the water and they had to boil the water for the tea and the coffee. seriously? lasty time i checked, boiling water with high lead content just increases the levels of lead in the water. my partner ordered a dr pepper for $2.50 and they brought him a glass with ice and a 12 oz can of pop. this probably cost them at most fifty cents! to add insult to injury a very large party that came in after us was served baskets of bread. we were brought a basket of bread after my partner had left therestaurantand i stood up to leave myself. i am sure the food is excellent but we decided not to dine. the dr pepper was sent back unopened and i paid for my (single) cup of coffee. ($2.00) my partner is latino and felt we were discriminated against because of this. he has never felt this way here in the rgv.

after struggling for some time of what to make of my experience at schneider's, i cannot remark negatively about therestaurantor quality of food; however, there is ample room for improvement.

stepping into the 6 pm dinner rush, i found it a positive sign to see all but two tables free in the main hall; however, no reservation meant we were temporarily shuttled outside and ignored for a bit. a no-show reservation freed up a table and we were eventually seated. the waitstaff seemed concerned with only certain customers (and although i won't claim bias/hate crimes like other reviews); and thus service at our table lagged a bit.

the quality of food is remarkable; and demonstrates a comfort-style homemade menu that intrigues and satisfies most palates. the appetizer selection is sub par in terms of restaurant-quality and leans more on the side of bar food. the entree selection is not immensely varied but highlights german home-style cuisine. dessert--much like the entree selection is simple, traditional and homestyle.

jager schnitzel: nicely cooked pork; crisp exterior. what major food culture doesn't have a thinly pounded out meat, battered and pan fried? no complaints
german-style potatoes: at best mediocre roasted potatoes; could have stayed under the broiler a few more minutes.
red cabbage: nicely acidic bursting with tradition dried bay leaf flavor--and in my serving a large stem.
peach cobbler: unremarkable; i'm not sure why i expected fresh peaches; but still classic
german beer in large frosted glasses? yes, please!

overall my experience was not negative; yet certainly not positive. i see ample room for improvement and it is incredibly clear management is aware of/reads these reviews. would i ultimately return? perhaps--purely in order to break the boring food scene; not because i was amply impressed by the restaurant.

what a mess!. four of us went to eat. we ordered an appetizer. then ordered our meals. after a while, i was told that they did not have the item i ordered and i had to change my order, so i did. then all the food came out except for mine. the waiter said it should be ready soon. i watched everyone else eat. the waiter stopped by and assured me that mine would be there soon. my wife finished her food. the waiter came by and assured us that mine would be there soon. the other couple finished their food. the waiter came by and apologized again. he said that when he changed the order, nobody in the kitchen prepared it, so they were just starting it. he said that we would get a free meal because of the mess up. mine finally came. at the end we asked for a couple of desserts instead of a free meal. the manager came by. the manager was rude and stated that when you come to eat at arestaurantthat cooks its food fresh, you have to expect these things to happen. absolutely no apology in any way and let us know that this is just the way it is at this restaurant. we will never go back to a place that believes it is okay for one person to sit and watch the rest of the party eat and then have them sit and watch the last person eat. the kitchen obviously messed up this time, but the manager refused to acknowledge that. such a shame to have the manager turn a simple error into a major issue that lost a customer.

the white people get all the attention. i went to schneider's german gasthaus & beergarden today and as we walked into the place i was really excited to try something new. i'm latino and i really don't like mexican food, so this was going to be a real treat for me. we sat down in the empty restaurant. we were given menus and i asked for a glass of water. i was told that i would have to buy for bottled water because of something to do with lead in the water. so i ordered soda and my partner (he's half german) ordered a cup of coffee. he was really excited to be in a germain restaurant. as i reviewed the menu and was thinking about the choices and about the water i couldn't help but think to myself if there is lead in the pipes, what about the coffee and the tea? what about the food? we were told that they boil the water for the coffee and the tea, but boiling water that has lead only increases the levels of this toxin. my partner ordered some food i decided not to order any food because i already had a bad taste in my mouth. when a large group of older people came in they were promptly served their beverages and brought baskets of bread. i then decided to leave therestaurantbecause i felt severely discriminated against because of this. my partner joined me outside and told me that the waiter brought a basket of bread and butter to our table after i had left the restautant and he had stood up to leave. he returned my soda unopened and told the staff to cancel his order and paid for his single cup of coffee. i have never felt so ignored in all my years in the rgv. it seemed like they were bending over backwards to attend to all the white senior citizens and ignoring the mixed couple who got there before any of them showed up... by the way, we always tip way better than any winter texan when we receive good service.

good food and good service. our friends and family have gone to schneider's over and over again and loved it every time. the folks are so friendly and make you feel at home. it makes me sad to read some of the negative comments about the restaurant, if somebody is in a big hurry, why do they even go out to eat. therestaurantis known in mcallen for making you feel like a friend, not just a customer. so what if you have to wait a few minutes extra... i know the food is made fresh and i enjoy visiting with my friends while i wait, maybe some people don't enjoy sitting for a while and just talking, well, i do ! the food is excellent and i have no complaints to share.
we call it going to "germany" when we go out to eat there, you should try it !
