an order for 2peopleon a friday night (3/4/16) took two hours. not exaggerating. the other tables around us took a similar amount of time as well. my food was just ok. my date ordered potato soup and it was honest to god refrigerator cold. i don't know, it's possible that it is supposed to be a 'cold' soup, but i doubt it. yuck!

i heard the waitress telling other tables that they were out of many menu items that they wanted to order. the kitchen is advertised as being open until 10pm, but they completely ran out of food and had to close for the night at 8:30pm. not sure what's going on there.

customet. 30peoplefrom our park, alamo. palms, went to your restaurant last night, sat mar 28. we had made reservations. 2 out of 28 got your special as you were out at 6:30. the poorly seasoned food was way overpriced for pork and medium portions. i would never come back for your not seasoned pork and cold bratwurst. i don't know anyone f tom our park who was happy with the food and service. only good thing was the beer.

a friendly family-style meal. i visited schneider's for the first time last friday night, 8-16-13 at about 2020. there were severalpeoplethere but it was not crowded or noisy. there were about fivepeoplesitting at the outdoor bar. there was some irish singer doing a good job of singing popular oldies.

i started off with a medium-dark beer suggested by the knowledgeable waiter. i didn't catch the name of it but it was not a strong, bitter beer, it was quite good actually and it was served in a foot tall glass.

i had the beertrucker steak ($14.50) which is a pork steak one inch thick and about six inches across covered with a dark beer gravy and onions. it was served on a hot oval-shaped cast iron skillet on a wood plank. the steak included a side dish covered with veggies. this was a full-sized plate; about half of it was fried potatoes with the skin on; very good, and there was at least three other veggies including shredded carrots, coleslaw, and thin cucumber slices in an oil and vinegar dressing that was very good. the coleslaw is made in the german style without mayonnaise. normally i never touch the slaw but this was good stuff and i ate it all.

i got to sample the apple strudel ($6.50) which is a piece about three inches wide and at least six inches long, it is covered with whipped cream and has vanilla ice cream on the side. it is enough for twopeopleto share and it is not too sweet and quite good.

all food in their kitchen with the exception of sauerkraut is made from scratch if not every day, the day before depending on what type of food it is. according to hartmut, the local climate does not allow sauerkraut to be made properly here and it takes about two weeks to ferment. everything else is made fresh.

the house salad ($7.50) and the goulash ($10.50) looked very good. the goulash is cubed beef served in a large bowl with tomato-onion gravy.

the owners hartmut and ursula schneider come out to visit and are very friendly. they'll explain menu items to you and make recommendations. all our wait staff was friendly.

sitting outside here is more like visiting someone's home and hanging out with friends and family in the backyard and less like a traditional restaurant. the owners remember your name and treat you like close friends and family on your next visit.

they even had a friendly cat wandering around the yard!

this is a casual place worth visiting and i plan on trying out more of the menu; one of the schnitzels or the goulash on the next visit. i'll try the rest later!

great food friendly atmosphere. for living in germany for 8 years my family and i found schneiders to be one of the most comforting restaurants here in the valley. we kept getting recommendations to try it out and we were very pleased with the service. their food is authentic german and delicious. their beer on tap is great. the wait staff is friendly and the owners are very welcoming. i would definitely keep going back and recommendpeopleto do so as well. especially if you want to try something different to eat.

the whitepeopleget all the attention. i went to schneider's german gasthaus & beergarden today and as we walked into the place i was really excited to try something new. i'm latino and i really don't like mexican food, so this was going to be a real treat for me. we sat down in the empty restaurant. we were given menus and i asked for a glass of water. i was told that i would have to buy for bottled water because of something to do with lead in the water. so i ordered soda and my partner (he's half german) ordered a cup of coffee. he was really excited to be in a germain restaurant. as i reviewed the menu and was thinking about the choices and about the water i couldn't help but think to myself if there is lead in the pipes, what about the coffee and the tea? what about the food? we were told that they boil the water for the coffee and the tea, but boiling water that has lead only increases the levels of this toxin. my partner ordered some food i decided not to order any food because i already had a bad taste in my mouth. when a large group of olderpeoplecame in they were promptly served their beverages and brought baskets of bread. i then decided to leave the restaurant because i felt severely discriminated against because of this. my partner joined me outside and told me that the waiter brought a basket of bread and butter to our table after i had left the restautant and he had stood up to leave. he returned my soda unopened and told the staff to cancel his order and paid for his single cup of coffee. i have never felt so ignored in all my years in the rgv. it seemed like they were bending over backwards to attend to all the white senior citizens and ignoring the mixed couple who got there before any of them showed up... by the way, we always tip way better than any winter texan when we receive good service.

don't know how the cook makes it, but i will have it again.

good food and good service. our friends and family have gone to schneider's over and over again and loved it every time. the folks are so friendly and make you feel at home. it makes me sad to read some of the negative comments about the restaurant, if somebody is in a big hurry, why do they even go out to eat. the restaurant is known in mcallen for making you feel like a friend, not just a customer. so what if you have to wait a few minutes extra... i know the food is made fresh and i enjoy visiting with my friends while i wait, maybe somepeopledon't enjoy sitting for a while and just talking, well, i do ! the food is excellent and i have no complaints to share.
we call it going to "germany" when we go out to eat there, you should try it !

2 1/2 stars. my family and went to schenider's last friday and to be honest, i expected more. the food was ok, but the service left a lot to be desired. there was a big party of about 20peoplethat was getting most of the waitresses' attention. after we sat down, we waited about 10 minutes before they brought us menus and took our drink order. on the plus side, the schnitzel and the red cabbage were very good. the spaetzle was ok, but under-seasoned. the beer was cold and it hit the spot. my son devoured the child's bratwurst plate and he said it was delicious. on the downside, some of the pan fried potatoes were overdone and slightly burned, the potato dumplings were too doughy, and the service was slow. although the prices were reasonable, i don't know if we'll be returning to schneider's anytime soon.

amazing!. amazingly delicious food, great service, the beer was flowing good, and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the other patrons. owners are sweetpeoplewho talk to all the bar customers like they are family, very 'warm feeling inside' place to be. @ badservice, that happens anywhere you go, and there was probably a simple kitchen mistake made...with a user name like "badservice", you sound like the type to complain about every place to eat at. ignore the negative nancys, this place is exactly what the valley needed!

bad service. the service at schneider's was the worst i have ever had to put up with. some of thepeoplein my party received their food and were finished before the rest of thepeoplereceived theirs. i paid $33 for three draft beers, because when i food finally came i was not interested in holding the rest of the party up while they waited for me to eat. my recommendation is if you want german food in mcallen, set down until it passes. don"t go to schneider"s.

excellent food. i lived in germany for 10 years in the army. i had the jager schnitzel and it was as if i had returned to germany. for all youpeoplewho share get the ladies portion or quit complaining. the place has to make a profit it is not here for you to be a cheap skate. there are man size and ladies size portions, if you don't want the man size it is not fair to buy the man size and share. again the place has to make a living. so suck it up the food and atmosphere are great.
