schneider's german gasthaus & bier garten

the white people get all the attention. i went to schneider's german gasthaus & beergarden today and as we walked into the place i was really excited to try something new. i'm latino and i really don't like mexican food, so this was going to be a real treat for me. we sat down in the empty restaurant. we were given menus and i asked for a glass of water. i was told that i would have to buy for bottled water because of something to do with lead in the water. so i ordered soda and my partner (he's half german) ordered a cup of coffee. he was really excited to be in a germain restaurant. as i reviewed the menu and was thinking about the choices and about the water i couldn't help but think to myself if there is lead in the pipes, what about the coffee and the tea? what about the food? we were told that they boil the water for the coffee and the tea, but boiling water that has lead only increases the levels of this toxin. my partner ordered some food i decided not to order any food because i already had a bad taste in my mouth. when a large group of older people came in they were promptly served their beverages and brought baskets of bread. i then decided to leave the restaurant because i felt severely discriminated against because of this. my partner joined me outside and told me that the waiter brought a basket of bread and butter to our table after i had left the restautant and he had stood up to leave. he returned my soda unopened and told the staff to cancel his order and paid for his single cup of coffee. i have never felt so ignored in all my years in the rgv. it seemed like they were bending over backwards to attend to all the white senior citizens and ignoring the mixed couple who got there before any of them showed up... by the way, we always tip way better than any winter texan when we receive good service.

loved it. i am german and just steping into schneiders was like being home it smelled like a german restaurant .the food was awesome the staff was great, german beer on tap german music was playing . i will be back again and again

fustrated with the limited variety of restaurants in my area, i proposed to my family that we try something new for a change, to which they replied excitedly. i stumbled across schneider's and was immediately hooked on the fact that it wasn't the satme ol' stuff--it was german! i mean, how neato is that? schneider's is a very casual, down-to-earth kind of place. the service is superb! everyone is just kind and warm--so much so, that when my mother got cold, they offered her a blanket (we were sitting outside). if that's not thinking about your customers, i'm not sure what is. anyway, the food is delicious and cooked in such a way that it resembles the typical "grandmothers loving meals". i personally loved my chicken "cordon bleu". i would recommend this place to anyone who is tired of the same old stuff and just wants to taste something deliciously new.

great change from the bland. my wife and i have been here twice and we highly recommend stopping in. ursula is always a great host with outstanding beer... the outside area has a firepit and covered areas if needed...can't get enough of this place...

loves it! i keep ordering the same thing because it's just so scrumptious! the jägerschnitzel. i also order a side of red cabbage. amazing! love german beer, spaten! owners are great! good service from wait staff. if you love hearty, homemade food you owe it to yourself to try them. german food is like comfort food, not too ethnic. seriously delicious!

yummy!. my family and i have been to schneider's several times and we are never disappointed with the food. it's been fresh tasting and made to order, which i can't say about many places around the valley. the food is rib sticking and flavorful and the wait staff have always been helpful in making menu choices. i'm sorry that not everyone has had as great an experience and me and my family. prost!

great food.. love the food here. the jager schnitzel is awesome. i can't wait until it cools off so i can spend more time here. i do agree the service has left a bit to be desired in the past, but anyone with a business in the valley can attest, good help is hard to find. the owners have always been open to honest criticism and made right with us when there was a problem on one occasion we visited.

tomaten käse schnitzel. i ate the tomaten kaese schnitzel the other day and can say it is about the best meal i have had.
don't know how the cook makes it, but i will have it again.

good food and good service. our friends and family have gone to schneider's over and over again and loved it every time. the folks are so friendly and make you feel at home. it makes me sad to read some of the negative comments about the restaurant, if somebody is in a big hurry, why do they even go out to eat. the restaurant is known in mcallen for making you feel like a friend, not just a customer. so what if you have to wait a few minutes extra... i know the food is made fresh and i enjoy visiting with my friends while i wait, maybe some people don't enjoy sitting for a while and just talking, well, i do ! the food is excellent and i have no complaints to share.
we call it going to "germany" when we go out to eat there, you should try it !

wow!. all you haters who are out there, i will do my best to combat you, you are just like high school bullies! schneider's is an awesome german restaurant with authentic, homemade food! if it is not your taste, leave the negative comments to yourself!

aweseome!!. seriously, if you want something different from mexican food, this is the place!!! the food is out of this world, the critics are crazy!! i had the best food and the best service in the rio grande valley!! haters!!! go to taco bell or burger king where you can have it your way!! if you want some awesome home cooked, fresh food, come visit schneider's!!

i am german and find the food authtic and very tasty. the staff are friendly and heipful. i have introduced several friends to scchneiders and most introduce other friends to the place

2 1/2 stars. my family and went to schenider's last friday and to be honest, i expected more. the food was ok, but the service left a lot to be desired. there was a big party of about 20 people that was getting most of the waitresses' attention. after we sat down, we waited about 10 minutes before they brought us menus and took our drink order. on the plus side, the schnitzel and the red cabbage were very good. the spaetzle was ok, but under-seasoned. the beer was cold and it hit the spot. my son devoured the child's bratwurst plate and he said it was delicious. on the downside, some of the pan fried potatoes were overdone and slightly burned, the potato dumplings were too doughy, and the service was slow. although the prices were reasonable, i don't know if we'll be returning to schneider's anytime soon.

amazing!. amazingly delicious food, great service, the beer was flowing good, and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and enjoying the other patrons. owners are sweet people who talk to all the bar customers like they are family, very 'warm feeling inside' place to be. @ badservice, that happens anywhere you go, and there was probably a simple kitchen mistake made...with a user name like "badservice", you sound like the type to complain about every place to eat at. ignore the negative nancys, this place is exactly what the valley needed!

bad service. the service at schneider's was the worst i have ever had to put up with. some of the people in my party received their food and were finished before the rest of the people received theirs. i paid $33 for three draft beers, because when i food finally came i was not interested in holding the rest of the party up while they waited for me to eat. my recommendation is if you want german food in mcallen, set down until it passes. don"t go to schneider"s.

i have never eaten there, but it is the only place i could find in mcallen with a good german beer on tap. the beergarten needs some work, but it is a good place to kick back outside and soak in some nectar. if you go in the summer nighttime bring a citrella candle for the bugs!

great place. friendly folks, great food and best of all...german beer!
