a nice addition to mo-town.sargassodoes many things very well. and just doing one thing well is difficult. the menu is inventive, the preparation is solid, the staff is helpful, and the restaurant itself is comfortable. there were a few problems we noticed, but nothing even close to problems that would keep us from going back very soon.
our table went through the maine lobster spring rolls, angliotti, and fried oysters for apps along with a peppercorn romaine salad. there were empty plates all around but we did notice the spring rolls had been left in the oil too long and were on the edge of burnt on the ends. the massive oysters were milky, meaty, and mild with light batter. the dish really was best when you got a bite of oyster, parmesan, and romaine together. the angliotti with candied leek sauce were everything you hope when ordering pockets of pasta stuffed with mashed potatoes. the dressing on the peppercorn romaine salad was nicely spicy and creamy.
for entrees, we did the table dance to ensure there were no repeats. while it's on the menu...get the pork chop stuffed with stilton, currants, and pistachios. really, just go order it now. veal marsala with fontina & sun-dried tomato ravioli was good, with a slight heavy hand on the salt. ahi tuna was fresh, ordered rare, and prepared as ordered. subbing broccoli rabe for the beans it came with was no problem and kept the sister-geek happy.
desserts were quality as well. peach upside-down cake with ginger ice cream, a classic vanilla creme brulee, and a mini chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. the ginger was just a tocuh granulated in the ice cream, but the cake was so moist it wasn't a bother. empty plates at the end of the meal and happy moans of full bellies.
