i have to cast a dissenting vote here on sammys after a less than good experience there last night

i'll start with what went well. the smell of burgers cooking as i came in from the parking lot was excellent and gave me some high hopes for my meal. smelled like a summer picnic with dad on the charcoal grill. waitress was solidly good, answered my many questions, and allowed me to get half and half on myfries(half garlic, half sweet potato)

everything else went rather badly. for 12.00 i received an overcooked (mw when mr was requested) and fairly dry burger with shredded lettuce (at this price point, i expected a nice piece or two of leaf lettuce) one slice of cheese instead of the two i ordered and paid extra for, and no grilled onions. when i pointed out that there were no grilled onions, a dish of oil-soaked barely cooked (no browning, no charring) onions was brought to me to add . i had asked if the bun was toasted or grilled in the aforementioned many questions, was told it was toasted, but this one wasn't. thefriesbrought to me on the first try were the wrong kind, and the ones that were brought to me as a correction were cold, old, and lacking anything remotely resembling crispness

i was asked how my experience was on the way out, and was honest about it. i did not expect to be comped, but it is nice to be offered to be comped or at least discounted, and i wasn't.

it is clear to me that this place has the ability to put out much better food than i received, but on this night, that wasn't the case. i won't be returning.

burger lovers beware!. i had heard so many wonderful things about sammy's from bloggers and 365 things to do in cincinnati. so i decided, since i live in blue ash to try this local hot spot. i've been there 4 times and only once, about 6 months ago, was our food enjoyable.

my boyfriend and i kept thinking - we'll give it another chance as burger lovers. each time our burgers have been over cooked, we order them medium, and once even medium rare. each time they have been well done. the first time although it was over cooked the burger was flavorful and juicy. our past three visits the burgers have been dry and not very good. on my last visit, my burger had sat under the heat lamp so long that the egg on my burger had become chewy and rubbery. our waitress was also less helpful or accommodating. we had to get our refills from the bar.

for the price and general experience, go to a chain like red robin where you can get consistent flavorful burgers. if you want to try something new in blue ash - hit up incahoots and try the be the boss burger. yum!

the only reason to go to sammy's is for the beer orfriesand neither are worth the price! i will not be going back. i'd rather go to a burger joint that can cook my burger properly.

my new favorite burger joint. burgers are great. i really love their blue cheese burger. the garlicfriesare amazing, but make sure your date has some too because they are made with fresh minced garlic. try a pitcher of their sammy's red beer, it goes great with the burgers. one of the top 10 burgers in the area (my list).

burgers are ok, not great and not gourmet. my wife and i ate at sammy's on a cold sunday evening a few week ago. there were maybe 10 people in the restaurant counting ourselves, yet the service was slow. the restaurant is decorated like a cross between a barbeque restaurant with pine tables and a sports bar with televisions hanging everywhere you look. so don't let the "gourmet" part of the name fool you.

we each had burgers. i had the sammy burger and my wife had a teriyaki burger (or something like that). both burgers were "ok", but not worthy of the praise they have received in the press. each had good toppings, but the burgers themselves overall were nothing special. the burgers were huge, however, so we did get our money's worth in terms of quantity. however, i suggest leaving off the lettuce and tomato - they just take up space and take away from the taste of the other toppings.

my wife hadfrieswith her burger; thefrieswere pretty good. i had the slaw, which was good, but nothing special.

perhaps the problem is that i like my burger to be a juicy ground beef patty with good flavor, not a flavorless gray round slab that is just a place to stack various toppings, which is how we classify sammy's.

there are enough similar restaurants in town to try that i don't see a reason to return to sammy's.

good food; terrible service. a group of 6 of us went there on 11/20. dining room was about 2/3 full. hostess didn't have a good command of the english language & frankly, neither did our server which is a must when taking food orders & serving the public. as the customer, it was annoying to have to deal with that.
we ordered appetizers of garlicfries(a bit over the top & the form of garlic on this will give you terrible indigestion!), spinach dip (ok) and fried shrimp that were great! we asked the server if they could toss the shrimp in some medium wing sauce & bring a side of blue cheese dressing...you know, buffalo shrimp? the server didn't understand what we were requesting. we finally ordered a side of wing sauce & dressing & did it ourselves.
everyone enjoyed their sandwiches. 4 of us had burgers (tasty & a great bun), 1 ordered a grilled salmon sandwich & it looked fantastic and 1 ordered a grilled chicken sandwich.
we will go back but if the service is bad again, we probably won't go back. there's at least 5 other great burger places around town with fantastic service.

decent burger. i'd give sammy's a 5/10. it's in kind of an odd spot for a restaurant, and coming from the west on creek rd., it's very easy to take a wrong turn while trying to get there as that road changes direction and forks a number of times. i kind of used up an entire lunch break trying to find the place :/
i appreciate the variety on the menu, it shows that they're trying to be creative and truly offer gourmet burgers.
on the plus side, they actually chose formidable buns (kaiser) instead of flimsy ones that would get soggy. also, thefriesare crispy and have a slightly spicy cajun-esque seasoning. also, a rather discrete exterior hides a well-taken care of interior.
on the downside, the burgers do indeed have a bit of a funny taste to them. they almost taste like they're made of sausage or something. also, they need to add some more exotic toppings to their burgers to make them live up to the namesake of "gourmet". for instance, the chipotle burger i got should've perhaps had slices of chipotle peppers or at least fresh jalepeno slices. change the soggy shredded lettuce for some arugala. give the chipotle mayo more of a kick.
overall, not a bad burger place, but it could definitely make some improvements. also, while their burgers are relatively good, they are not worth the exorbitant prices they are listed for - a mediocre quality burger does not warrant a $9 + price tag. a decent place to go if you're in the area, but not worth hopping towns for, and certainly not deserving of being ranked in the top 50 of the city.

the final hurrah.... after being told by my cardiologist that there was an issue with my stress test.. and that i was set for an angiogram the next day.. what better way to go than to eat a grease burger.... so, since sammy's was next door to my hotel we stopped and expected really nothing out of the ordinary.. i ordered a blue cheese burger.. this was love at first bite.. .. the next day my angiogram showed absolutley nothing wrong.. so, with my hospital wrist band still on we stopped at sammy's for lunch.. this time a nathan's hot dog with grilled peppers.. totally awesome.. now, each time we visit my cardiologist in cinci we stop at sammy's.. a different burger, garlicfriesand the best taste this side of chicago and newyork.. .. for those of you who complain.. its a free country... but, this is absolutely the best in ohio.. even better than mike symon's in cleveland..

sammy's not gourmet burger. my experience at sammy's was lacking all around. but, let's forget about the poor service and talk about the mediocre burger. first, the bleu cheese burger i received was not made to order nor was it made according to the description on the menu. the meat was of average quality at best. there was no noticeable sauce and no onion ring. there was, however, an ample amount of bleu cheese. thefrieswere good, but cold. i would not go back for this pricey disappointment.

great place, great food. love this place. went with a girlfriend for girls nite. the burgers were awesome!! i was torn on what to get and our waitress was super helpful and completely guided me in the right direction. i ended up getting something not on the menu. i got the mushroom burger and substituted the sammy sauce with bbq sauce and added bacon. the flavors were wonderful. and it wasn't messy at all. i also upgraded and got the garlic and parm fries. dipped in ranch dressing i think these were quite possibly the bestfriesever!! i will definately go back and take my husband this time.

took the husband. food was still good but we went on a red's game night but the service was slow and it was so hot in there. if you have time it is fine but if you are looking for something quick you might think again.

i've eaten at sammy's severl times now and each time the food has been very good and service prompt, even when the place is packed. thefriesare good, and i especially like the garlic fries. the bf had ordered a regular burger, chili burger (twice), and the mushroom burger. he has proclaimed them all very tasty. i've ordered the veggie burger, which is grilled veggies and not a patty. i especially like the fact that the grilled veggies include zucchini, besides the typical mushrooms, onions and peppers. the buns are very soft and fresh and very tasty. they also stand up the the grilled veggies. per the bf, the large beer is too large and the small beer too small. each time i eat at sammy's i can't wait to go back.

not just the burgers are great. after hitting this place up the first time, i've been back about once a week since. burgers are definitely top notch. lots of different styles and toppings to chose from. my wife had the french onion soup and proclaimed it one of the best. i've also tried some of their fish offerings during lent and was really impressed with the crispy crust and tender fish. the garlicfriesare okay. they could be less greasy. the 32 oz. draught beers are a godsend on hot afternoons. my only gripe is that the tables near the kitchen catch occasional whiffs of sewer gas either from the bathrooms or exhaust fans. take a table by the front door or better yet, sit on the patio during the warmer months.

everything was great, but.... it was not a bad first experience here. the spinach artichoke dip was great but the chips were a little stale. the 'sammy burger' had all the right ingredients on it, including a fried egg but the burger itself, which is labeled as 'angus', was reminiscent of one of those pre-formed, processed, gray patties you'd find stacked together and packaged by the 20 at sam's club. the presentation was great as well as thefriesbut i wouldn't consider it to be one of the area's finest burger joints until they at least make an effort for hand-made patties.
