rim naam came highly recommended for its great food and fantastic ambience, and we decided to give it a shot on a weekend night. walking upto the restaurant, i knew we were in for something special!
the cobbled road to the restaurant snakes across the oberoi’s back lawns, through adorable little stone arches and leads to a very large, warmly-lit gazebo. despite the chaos of mg road just a few hundred meters away and the activity in the hotel itself a few feet across the lawns, rim naam is almost fairytale-like in its aesthetics. the gazebo is open on all sides and very simply decorated with lanterns and plants. the granite floor, slated wooden tables and the standard wooden chairs aren’t special in their own right, but they contribute to the casual, understated elegance of this unique outdoor location. add to that the cool bangalore weather, the greenery around and even the small noises made by the odd cricket or two all and you have an ambience of unadulterated beauty, peace and quiet. big thumbs up to the team for creating this gem!
on the recommendation of the server, we started our meal with the thai mushroom salad, about which we were highly sceptical. turned out our concerns were unfounded, because this was by far the most delicious mushroom salad i’ve ever eaten in my life! it comprised a delicious blend of white fungus, shiitake mushroom and button mushrooms, doused in a light chili, sugar and lemon dressing. while the dressing was very similar to that of a som tam salad, the mushrooms added a very robust, meaty taste and texture. moreover, the salad was tossed through with red onions, spring onions and loads of fresh mint. the mint added oodles of freshness and turned the salad from a simple blend of mushrooms into an inspiring and unique flavor combination. a winner of a dish, and probably one that will prompt me to go back to rim naam again and again!
for the main course, we went with a pad see yoo noodle dish (i don’t remember what it was called on this menu, but it was exactly like pad see yoo) and another recommended dish, the pak choy and asparagus stir-fry.
frankly, i was a bit disappointed in the stir fry. that’s not because it was a sub-par dish, but because there was nothing that special about it! the vegetables (asparagus, mushroom, and pak choy) comprised very high-quality, fresh product and were cooked to perfection with a bit of bite remaining. the little pieces of fried garlic on top added a nice zing, and the light soy-based sauce was also fairly delicious. overall, it was an extremely good plate of stir-fried vegetables but i don’t think it deserves to be a special item—where is the uniqueness factor?
the noodle dish, too, was very good but nothing extraordinary. the flat noodles were nicely cooked and tossed together with carrots, broccoli and baby corn. the soy-based sauce was tasty but not spicy, as expected, making this a nice, light dish that complemented the vegetables nicely.
if the main course was rather standard, the desserts, like the starter, took the meal to a high once again. they brought us two dishes of flavoured crème brulee—one with coconut, the other with lemongrass. both had a light yet creamy texture hidden beneath a glossy, glassy layer of caramel and it was a total foodie’s delight to break through that sugar layer and dig into the calorie-laden deliciousness underneath. the flavors were subtle and interwoven through the classic dessert with ease, such that they didn’t see at all odd or forced, as i had feared they would—who would have though coconut/ lemongrass and crème brulee would marry so well together? it’s a pleasant surprise to find a dessert that i actually like on a thai menu, and this was truly exceptional.
overall, the meal was rather excellent and elevated to a new level by the ambience. the service, too, was exceptional—polite, helpful and pleasant—and i have a feeling this would make an excellent choice for a romantic meal on a special occasion. while the main course may have been a bit uninspiring, the starters and desserts show rim naam’s potential and i’d definitely like to give it another shot to see what else they can deliver.
is there a big hole in my pocket? sort of. at inr 3,500 for two people, rim naam is definitely not cheap but well worth it for what they offer. i can’t wait to go back!
