where the locals eat. when i was in honolulu earlier this month, i asked several locals where the locals eat. each and everyone recommended the rainbow drive inn which, one person told me, was featured on food tv. so off we went the the rainbow. theplaceis very busy with lots of locals. you order from the window and there are a few tables to sit outside. the food is plentiful and very inexpensive; excellent value for your buck if you're hungry. for significantly less than $10 one can enjoy what in hawaii they call a plate lunch: one or two scoops of rice, macaroni salad (packed with mayo on the rainbow but delicious in hearty sort of way) and lots of meat options to choose from. they also have sandwiches but i didn't try them. service is informal, quick and efficient. a sign posted on the wall lists the main ingredients for each course (for health conscious people to make their own decisions). on the whole, a wonderful place. the food is hearty, tasty (in a homemade sort of way) and most affordable. it was a great experience to visit the rainbow.
