since our last hawaii vacation, whenever we reminisce about it, rainbow would always be part of it. it wasn't only about the fun food, sitting and eating with the locals, the picnic styled like benches and tables but the whole ambiance. so no surprise, after our arrival at the honolulu airport and securing our rental van, off we went to rainbow. what agreatbeginning to our vacation!!!!

retro cool. had the mix plate - mahi, chicken and beef - and it was awesome and agreatdeal. if you're a tourist and a triple-d fan - it's worth the short bus ride from waikiki. prepare to wait in line and don't expect fancy service or ambiance. eat at the outdoor picnic tables, or take it back to the hotel :)

yikes!!. my boyfriend picked this one. we both had the mix plate which included a sampling of fried fish, fried chicken (getting the theme here) and a slab of pork. it tasted less than average and a really waste of calories. the picnic tables were not kept clean. all around it was not an enjoyable experience. for agreatoutdoor dining experience i recommend heading to the north shore and dining at one of the many shrimp truck along the road.

popped in for dinner from recommendation from driver who dropped us off at hotel. the food is simple fare but the menu had a lot of offer for most diners. the rainbow burger isgreatvalue and the chilli fries are throughly enjoyable. it's a popular spot for those dining in and taking away glad i got the chance to check this place out.

great experience if you are after a local hawaiian diner experience. this is not "fancy" food but more comfort food of hawaii. they make agreatchilli - comes on chips or taters. we were told to try the locomoco and it was delicious. runny eggs sunny side up mixed with a rich gravy over 2
patties and fluffy rice! it comes with an extremely creamy mayo macaroni salad too! get all of it on your fork! the mixed meat platter was an okay experience, comes with beef, chicken, fish, coleslaw and macaroni salad. locomoco is definitely the winning dish to try.

where the locals eat. when i was in honolulu earlier this month, i asked several locals where the locals eat. each and everyone recommended the rainbow drive inn which, one person told me, was featured on food tv. so off we went the the rainbow. the place is very busy with lots of locals. you order from the window and there are a few tables to sit outside. the food is plentiful and very inexpensive; excellent value for your buck if you're hungry. for significantly less than $10 one can enjoy what in hawaii they call a plate lunch: one or two scoops of rice, macaroni salad (packed with mayo on the rainbow but delicious in hearty sort of way) and lots of meat options to choose from. they also have sandwiches but i didn't try them. service is informal, quick and efficient. a sign posted on the wall lists the main ingredients for each course (for health conscious people to make their own decisions). on the whole, a wonderful place. the food is hearty, tasty (in a homemade sort of way) and most affordable. it was agreatexperience to visit the rainbow.

this is a neat place. i am visiting from california and asked a few people off the street where i could find a good local hawaian place -- the majority seemed to say rainbow however they warned me it was a far walk. since people agreed this was the place to go, i took the chance and walk there -- took about 10 mins from the castle ocean hotel. the walk was worth it. i ordered a mixed plate for $7.25 and the portions was enough to feed me and my wife. i noticed that most people would order "to-go" so they would get their orders in a box -- i guess they were anticipatinf they wouldnt finish it. this place has agreatambience and friendly people. i hope people will enjoy it as much as me. oh i was tempted to order their corned beef hash with eggs for $6.00 but i'll have to save that for another day if i have time.

stay away from the hash. i've heard nothing but good things about this place so it was withgreatjoy that i decided to give them a try. it was breakfast time, so i got the egg/hashbrown/rice plate.

service was quick and an understanding of english by the staff seemed strained - but friendly.

it was basically sticky/dry white rice, some strange egg square that was supposed to be scrambled eggs, and omg the hash was awful. (btw, my friend who i gave the food to thought it was "good"). i think it was $6.

i have never tried corned beef hash from a can (only "homestyle" - real meat, real potatoes, etc.) and i probably will never again. i like my eggs hot, made with cream/milk/butter, fluffy etc. i like my rice non sticky and full of flavor (prefer spanish rice, my version of course) and i like my corned beef hash homestyle (real meat, fresh potates, etc.).

i'll probably go back but only if someone else really wants to go and they're going to buy my lunch/dinner.
