i’ve been coming to quanthanhfor years and years. not sure why but i prefer the take away option with these guys. having said that every time i place an order i am told it will be ready in 15 minutes. this is never the case no matter how busy it is. it is always 20-30 minutes. this is the only negative thing i can say about quan thanh.

besides that the food is amazing, the rice paper rolls are up there with the best in brisbane. if you haven’t been to this place you are missing out!

quanthanhwas always packed that one time i gave up waiting on this restaurant and ate in trang.

there are so many menus to choose from and i kinda got confused the first time i came here since they provide chinese food as well. tried the sliced rare beef noodle soup. it was the classic beef pho flavour with savoury broth and generous portion of both noodles and beef slices. the price was also fairly decent and made me want to try other menus!

it was our first time at quanthanhand we dined on a weekday lunch. we were greeted and seated quickly and served cold water while deciding what to order.

we decided to share a pork bbq wonton noodle soup ($14.40) and a broken rice with combination ($16.40). food was very tasty and servings were huge! we had plenty for lunch and even had more to takeaway for dinner. fantastic value for 4 meals!

we were anticipating a nice lunch and some pastries and coffee at choquette patisserie today. walking to the store front at noon, we could see it was closed. not happy!

we make our way to quanthanhand help ourselves to a table. cold water and menus are provided promptly and we place our order. phuong tran's combination pho ($13.90) arrives steaming hot. tasting the beef broth i say it is bland. phuong says it is average compared to what is offered in inala/sunnybank and that the meat serving is small. she is still happy to rate her meal 4.0/5.0

my beef brisket and tendon claypot ($15.90) looks appetising but this is not a proper claypot meal. the cooked rice, beef and eggs are precooked and simply scooped into this cold claypot and microwaved. my meal is certainly not cooked over a stove as the claypot is barely warm. the food is palatable but i feel scammed!
rating: 3.0/5.0

the fried quail ($8.90) is so tiny and is overdone. quail prices at the saigon are $5.80 and at cam ranh $5.50! this dish is overpriced and disappointing.
rating:3.0/5.0

the vietnamese iced coffee is average at best and rates 3.5/5.0! while i was happy with the friendly service, this was a lacklustre and disappointing vietnamese meal.

quanthanhis basically the tastier version of trang down the road, popular enough to have two entirely separate restaurants focusing on different cuisines right next to each other.

we usually tend to go more often for vietnamese dishes, their food is always very flavourful and in very good portions for the price. i think similar to trang it's always full because it's never not worth it, it's a way to have a good dinner or lunch out without breaking the bank.

our favourite dish is definitely their braised beef noodle soup, it's very hearty so be warned that it's not really a lot like pho; the broth is fatty and rich, the meat is always incredibly tender and so are the vegetables. be very careful, it will stain your clothes!

service is decent, they almost always have someone at the door to ask if you'd rather have dine in or takeaway, the staff is friendly enough, it's understandable that they're usually in a rush with the amount of people they have to serve. the decor isn't that fantastic either, you're definitely going for the food.

overall, if you just want to have a decent dinner in a very lively restaurant without paying too much, then this place is quite good.

i remember my family and i being regularly frequenters to west end's vietnamese restaurants. and it was always between quanthanhand trang's. how amazing it was to see how everything looks so bright and different!
quanthanhhas two restaurant-buildings, separated by an independent bottle shop. it was certainly bustling on a monday night.

we ordered a range of dishes incl. pho, rice paper rolls, bun bo hue, pork laksa, com tam bi suon and morning glory.
i had the rice paper rolls and bun bo hue. both were full of flavour and satisfyingly equal in portions of carbs and protein (often at other places, i find rice paper rolls and/or noodle dishes are heaped with noodles with only a few morsels of other ingredients).

service was quick and efficient. my family and i left with content stomachs and fond memories of the delicious comfort viet food, which have not changed over the years.

i have been craving the vietnamese beef noodle soup (pho) for weeks and have tried the soup at a couple of different places but every time walked away disappointed. this morning, we decided to go back to cafe o mai at annerley but unfortunately the cafe was closed. we decided to take a drive to west end and stumbled upon quanthanhand i'm so glad that we did because their beef noodle soup was what i have been craving! it was full of flavour. the service was great and of course, can't have vietnamese food without the vietnamese iced coffee! would definitely go back to this place

despite wonderful service, my quanthanhdining experience can only be described as average.

fair or not, i came to quanthanhin search of brisbane's best curry puff. i have not read anything where they themselves claim they have great curry puffs, but several zomato reviewers highly recommended them and i recall reading one review entitled, "i dream of these curry puffs".

naturally, i began with the curry puffs (the choices were beef or vegetable, so i chose beef). the outside was visually appealing and had good flavor and texture, but the filling was very disappointing. the flavor was bland and the texture was akin to eating a mouthful of grated coconut, which i suspect was likely grated cabbage. the flavor and texture didn't work for me and i only ate two of the four puffs. the curry puff rated a 2.5-3.

next i sampled the malaysian chicken satay. the chicken was a bit dry and the flavor was bland. the sauce helped with the dryness, but the flavor of the two combined wasn't great. i ate one of the satay and had the other packed up with the curry puffs to take home. the malaysian chicken satay rated a 2.

at this point i was zero for two at quanthanhand decided to pull the plug on my meal. the service was wonderful (4), but the food was just not very good.

based on the recommendations, i feel like i need to return at some point to try some mains and give them a shot at redemption. it just wasn't meant to be on this evening.

the search for a great curry puff continues...

this is an unusual restaurant being that on one side of a bottle shop there is quanthanhwhich serves chinese and malaysian, and on the other side it serves vietnemese as quanthanh!. we choose the viet side and sat at a outside table. we had for entree wontons and some shredded beef paper rolls, both very tasty. for main we both decided on king prawn clay pot , unfortunately what came out was very disappointing and unusual. the dish was filled with tofu and the sauce tasted bland and made no justice to the prawns. i have had many clay pot in vietnam and here, and this was the worst sorry to say. i would like to think the rest of the dishes they served are far better as many people were eating there. we will go back and give some other a try though.

after reading the reviews, we decided to drop by quanthanhfor our dinner. we ordered the broken rice with combinations from the vietnamese menu, and a char kway teow from the chinese menu. not being very familiar with vietnamese cuisine other than pho, i have to admit that we are not very used to the unique taste and texture of the egg cakes and shredded pork. but serving was generous for the rice. as for the char kway teow, while we find the taste acceptable, it was too dry for our liking, which makes the noodles stick together in clumps.

it was one warm autumn’s evening we had a rather long and tiring week and decided something comforting yet nourishing was needed to revitalise us and soothe our appetites – the words vietnamese pho sprang to mind and my companion wholeheartedly agreed (especially as he had been a victim of the flu) with that in mind we set off for west end. having been to trang’s we felt it was time to try the other vietnamese establishments along hardgrave road, with its bright lights and the din of bustling diners, quanthanhimmediately caught our attention.

very impressed, this place deserves the rating it has. staying with my wife in hospital this last week, and i wanted to get her a treat instead of the usual hospital food. so i thought a good bowl of pho will do the trick. on reading the ratings it was quanthanhor the alternate a few doors down. i went with the less busy one, to speed things along. so when i got back and unpacked it all, i was blown away by the quantity. there ended up being enough for my wife, me and my mother in law, who was there also. the broth was beautifully flavoured and had just a little punch to it. the crispy skin chicken was nicely done and all the other elements went together well. the vegetarian spring rolls were also lovely.
i can't wait to go back for a dine-in experience under better circumstances.

one of the most cherished favourites, not just in west end, but probably the whole of brisbane, quanthanhis one of those gems which seems to have been untouched with time. it is just as popular with the vietnamese population as it is with the non-vietnamese population, and at any instance that business is open there will be a whole lot of people dining happily, gobbling up all that they have to offer. the simple reason, the food is simple sublime.

my friend in particular felt like something with noodles and cited vietnamese as what she particularly had a hankering for. having a decent knowledge about the offerings around west end, there were a few places on the main stretch that would offer noodles and a couple of vietnamese places as well; however, for the real experience and darlings, hardgrave road was where to go. that was quite a walk all the way from the bus station, but that was nothing too daunting for her. thus, it was a walk through the familiar streets of west end - seeing new places, and finding where others were - up to the final location, hardgrave road and all its asian glory.

like anything on this stretch of the street, you are not here for the looks of the place. it has an atmosphere to it, a really relaxed one, and they manage to put many tables in without cramping the customers. most are out on the patio, and a few are inside. the atmosphere is a rowdy one, and turnover is really quick. there are now two sections of the restaurant, with a bottle shop between them which helps that quan than is byo.

the service is like something out of a chinatown restaurant. demeanour is not the key focus, but more so the delivery of the food and services that makes it what it is. well not the most friendly, at all times they keep up quite a polite face. the tempo never rests, and is always super efficient. if something isn't available, they will come and inform you apologetically; the food is brought out really quickly, though not efficiently - more so when the food is ready (there is something a tad more charming about that mode). a beat is never missed - drop the chopsticks on the ground and they will rush out, take them to the kitchen and return with a fresh pair.

the long story short is that you are in good, capable hands here.

this menu is massive, and i mean massive. there are two double-side a3, laminated sheets acting as menus. and man, are you spoiled for choice with them. they have one menu that has the original vietnamese cuisine, and the other one is a combination of malaysian and chinese. on either one, you will be hard-pressed even trying to whittle down the best choices to - let's say - a dozen, since there are all kinds of classics on there, plus more different sorts of dishes and whatever meat tickles your fancy, they will have it - and seafood does not cost noticeably more either. chef's specials be darned, as even then it sounds all too good. dozens of returns are necessary to even get a taste of the whole selection; this is why it works as a place to take a lot of people.

regardless, eventually you can find a few things and share between the folks. serving sizes are substantial, which makes this a haven for anyone on a budget and it is a guarantee that you will leave with a contented stomach.

beginning the meal, it was getting a couple of entrees. my friend went for one of her favourites, thai fish cakes, and the one i eyed off was salt and pepper quail. both of these entrees were tasty. the fish cakes were fish cakes, not much to describe about them. they came in a serving of four, and with a small tub of sweet chili sauce on the side. the fish was tender, really hot and mixed with quite a bit of vegetables - it passes well.

going about the opposite route was the salt and pepper quail, which was split in half and cooked till it was crispy. the pieces were served on a bed of seasonings, ranging from salt to pepper, to chili to shallots. mixing these tastes in with the meat helped give it plenty of seasoning. the whole skin on the bird was crispy, and the consistency was dead on perfect for texture. as for the actual flesh, it was tender and juicy. this is not an elegant bird to eat, and will require the use of fingers to get the best out of it. i don't have quail often, but when i do it is always very good.

next coming up, it was the main course. the friend went for a vermicelli salad with sugar cane prawns. this was quite a light meal, that was filled with plenty of vermicelli noodles, a good serving of different herbs including coriander and more than a few pieces of prawns. in addition, a couple of sticks of sugar cane were mixed in to give it flavour. on the side is a small tub of dressing. mix all this together, and you have a fairly simple dish that uses several kinds of natural flavours. it is slightly acidic, crunchy and the occasional bits of meat are always a treat.

my dish was one of the chef's specials: a king prawn and tofu claypot. this was a stark contrast to the salad. this one was hot, it was thick in consistency and it was filled to the brim with all sorts of items. both the prawns and the tofu were both plump, plentiful and delicious; the prawns were sweet and crunchy, while the tofu was soft and moreish doing a great job soaking up all of the sauce. in with the aforementioned items was some crunchy capsicum. the sauce was what held it together. it was a mixture of sweet and sour flavours, with a bit of vinegar mixed in to it. a simple dish down to the bone, but one that had heaps of flavour nonetheless.

it goes without saying again that an iced white coffee was on the agenda; the mathematics was all there: vietnamese cuisine, i like coffee, the coffee was a beverage option, and i complete the formula by ordering it. one personal gripe, and this is personal with nothing against this place, is that the whole show of the coffee is skipped. what i mean by this is that i like to see the coffee slowly drip onto the bed of condensed milk before you stir it together and pour it over ice. again, preferences and it does not stop the coffee from tasting good anyway. it was strong, it was sweet and it was very creamy. this was so good that i managed to sneak another one in during a meal, and it has been a maneuver that i have done before to weasel in a sweet. which leads to the dessert course.

finishing off the meal, a dessert was ordered to split. the first choice was a banana fritter with ice cream (and caramel topping), however they were out of banana and it was deep fried ice cream instead. deep fried ice cream is a lot better than it should sound, and what has always interested me is how they get the ice cream to not melt when it is getting cooked. even more so here, the ice cream was so hard, it could not get split evenly with a spoon - instead it was separated from the coconut coating. the ice cream was creamy, went down a treat and the patterns done on the plate with the syrup were photo worthy.

deep down in this part of town, there is a reason that this place has survived for so many years - actually, make that several reasons. what needs to be said first is that the food is nothing short of delicious and it has a perfect faction - it's honest, the portion sizes are generous and quite good for the price (you can pay a motza easily in west end), plus the variety of items on the menu and no pretentious bullshit. you can rock up there on any day for lunch and dinner without pre-planning, and it will be both busy yet have plenty of tables free for customers.

when it comes to west end, it still stands as one of the most solid suburbs for sheer variety of dining options. it does not really lend itself that well to the trendy scene, as places can come and go in an instance. what it is good for is good and honest fare, where any cuisine will be given a go. among several other institutions, quanthanhis a survivor for the times and it deserves to be so.
