didn't find it "cheap". i'm a lifelong local but amazingly have never been to peg leg pete's for anything except drinks at night. i saw peg leg pete's listed under the "cheap eats" category on urbanspoon and thought that was somewhat misleading. i would put it in the next category up. this place is a great deal for oysters, that's for sure, and has a lot of affordable options, but it is still very easy to walk out of there with a hefty bill. there are half priced wine nights, and i believe now it is .60 cent oyster nights, so call for deals.the oyster prices are pretty darn good.
theservicewas excellent. our server was attentive but not overly so, our food arrived incredibly quickly and we didn't wait too long.
the side salad was nothing to write home about, just your standard iceberg situation. the crab claw appetizer was drenched in butter but no real trace of garlic. they were fairly lackluster so i recommend getting fried.
the oysters were great, even for summer when they aren't at their best. i got the sampler because i'd never had their baked oysters before and couldn't decide between imperial or cajun. i was surprised to discover my favorite of the bunch ended up being buffalo! a buffalo sauce, bleu cheese and breadcrumb topped oyster seemed pretty gimmicky and silly to me, but i really have to admit that it somehow worked really well. the peg leg pete's hot sauce was awesome, it has a very interesting flavor, almost like a tiger sauce, a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg or something like that? tastes awesome on oysters!
we split some snow crab legs and i was disappointed to find they were dreadfully overcooked, maybe even re-steamed or boiled. you can sort of tell when the legs look rather translucent, they bend instead of cracking open, the meat is all bunched up into nothing and hard to remove, etc. if you want snow crab, i know the place is kitschy but i would honestly recommend crabs we got 'em. it is gulf side with a nearly unbeatable view for a pcola beach restaurant, and they mainly do crab, so they have it down. for oysters i'm going to hands down say peg leg pete's is the best place in pensacola.
