four people ordered two bingsoo to share and second one arrived when we finished first one. very unorganized service. even some one who came after us and get their order delivered before us because they are thai...

9.5/10

1) taro bingsoo - tastes exactly like my childhood bday cake from savoy cakes with little treasures inside for a bit of texture

2) thai milk tea bingsoo - extremely well executed flavour of thai milk tea

piled high and topped with a crown of cream and fairy floss, the bingsoo really is a sight to behold. it tasted as good as it looked too, the shaved ice impossibly fluffy and light, melting on the tongue with a refreshing sweetness, and a hint of bitterness from the tea. there’s even a little pot of condensed milk on the side if you like things super sugary. and that’s not even the full story. hidden at the bottom is a treasure trove of slippery jellies, and a handful of cornflakes, which may sound odd, but actually adds a delightful crunch to the cold creaminess.

the bingsu was really good! we tried the honeydew flavour, toppings were great and when we asked for extra condensed milk, they did so! also tried the brick toast but i found that it was too sweet and buttery where it was enjoyable at first but sickening after a few bites. however, those with a sweet tooth may like it. portion is massive and definitely can be shared between 2

old skool kafey is definitely on my list of the best dessert places in sydney cbd. before i start writing this review, i do have a confession to make. i have been here at least 5 times before and every single time i get the same thing, the old skool milk tea bingsu.

yummy bingsoo.

old school ka-fey is a small cafe on pitt street, sydney with an interesting interior with a metal piping maze along one side of the wall with antique pieces attached. the menu is limited with a primary focus on bingsoo (flavoured shaved ice), they also serve brick toast. seating is limited and not pram friendly. you order at the cash register and receive a table number.

we came for dessert straight after lunch so we didn't order much. i just wanted to try the bingsoo and the brick toast was considered but all the options had nutella which i did not like so we decided against it.

when we arrived, we had to wait as it was surprisingly busy considering it was a cold day and every table had a bingsoo.

customer service was okay.

we ordered a strawberry cheese pie bingsoo. to drink, we ordered a thai milk tea frappe, lychee curacao blue, and strawberry soda.

the strawberry cheese pie bingsoo took a while to arrive. however, it did not disappoint in taste. it was topped with cream cheese, fresh strawberries, fairy floss, and strawberry syrup. it was pillowy soft and melted in your mouth. it had the right amount of sweetness and can be adjusted to taste as you add the extra shot of strawberry syrup. the cream was soft and delicious when eaten together. it tasted like i was eating strawberry jam ice cream, it was so good. the fairy floss was a hit with the kids. i was however disappointed with the limited number of strawberries. i was however surprised that there was some at the bottom of the bowl. definitely a hit with everyone as the plate was polished off.

the thai milk tea frappe was visually disappointing. from the pale colour, i already knew that they skimped on the powder as i could barely taste the thai milk tea. there was so much cream on top as well, it did however taste nice.

the lychee curacao blue was nice, not too sweet. it was topped with a pretty flower. however, there was not enough lychee flavour.

the strawberry soda was topped with mixed fruit. it tasted like a strawberry jam soda, it was nice. it was disappointing that it was served warm/room temperature, we had to wait for the ice to melt before we could really enjoy it.

verdict: definitely try the strawberry cheese pie bingsoo for a cool and satisfying dessert. be prepared to wait as seating is limited.

how did it take me so long to try this!! the bingsu here is amazing - the thai milk tea and taro flavours were on point. didn’t taste like chunks of shaved ice, was finely grinder, flavour was evenly distributed and it literally just melted in my mouth. thai milk tea comes with grass jelly and corn flakes at the bottom, while taro comes with what seemed like sweet potato. wasn’t a huge fan of the sweet potato - personally think mochi would have been a better substitute.

this place does get quite busy so expect to be in line on weekends. we waited maybe 20 minutes to get seated. the downside to this place is that they have a policy that for every 2 people, you need to order a dish. so we came with 5 expecting another friend, so we needed to order 3. this really sucks if you’re already really full!! we ordered the matcha frappe but it tasted okay.

great delicious bingsoos & french toast + beautiful interior #they even hung a bike on the wall. cafe has a policy of 1 shared dish minimum between 2 ppl, or if odd no# persons then round up dishes required - may be a bit difficult if customers are full after dinner. thai milk tea bingsoo is super nice.

we got the strawberry cheese bingsu, thai milk tea bingsu and banana nutella toast. all tasted amazing 😝
the ambience is nice as well, except the fact that it's quite small so probably are not suitable for groups that have more than 5.
will come back later to try the other bingsu as well ☺️
