yummy bingsoo.
old school ka-fey is a small cafe on pitt street, sydney with an interesting interior with a metal piping maze along one side of the wall with antique pieces attached. the menu is limited with a primary focus on bingsoo (flavoured shaved ice), they also serve brick toast. seating is limited and not pram friendly. you order at the cash register and receive a table number.
we came for dessert straight after lunch so we didn't order much. i just wanted to try the bingsoo and the brick toast was considered but all the options had nutella which i did not like so we decided against it.
when we arrived, we had to wait as it was surprisingly busy considering it was a cold day and every table had a bingsoo.
customer service was okay.
we ordered a strawberry cheese pie bingsoo. to drink, we ordered a thai milk tea frappe, lychee curacao blue, and strawberry soda.
the strawberry cheese pie bingsoo took a while to arrive. however, it did not disappoint in taste. it was topped with cream cheese, fresh strawberries, fairy floss, and strawberry syrup. it was pillowy soft and melted in your mouth. it had the right amount of sweetness and can be adjusted to taste as you add the extra shot of strawberry syrup. the cream was soft and delicious when eaten together. it tasted like i was eating strawberry jam ice cream, it was so good. the fairy floss was a hit with the kids. i was however disappointed with the limited number of strawberries. i was however surprised that there was some at the bottom of the bowl. definitely a hit with everyone as the plate was polished off.
the thai milk tea frappe was visually disappointing. from the pale colour, i already knew that they skimped on the powder as i could barely taste the thai milk tea. there was so much cream on top as well, it did however taste nice.
the lychee curacao blue was nice, not too sweet. it was topped with a pretty flower. however, there was not enough lychee flavour.
the strawberry soda was topped with mixed fruit. it tasted like a strawberry jam soda, it was nice. it was disappointing that it was served warm/room temperature, we had to wait for the ice to melt before we could really enjoy it.
verdict: definitely try the strawberry cheese pie bingsoo for a cool and satisfying dessert. be prepared to wait as seating is limited.
