the first proper meal we had in tasmania was at a quirky café called laneway, devonport , located just a short drive from the exit point of the spirit of tasmania. as we hadn't had any breakfast (half a banana does not count), we were so glad and relieved to discover that it was already open at 7:15am. the menu was quite limited, but somehow all five of us ended up ordering different dishes. i had the smashed avocado and feta on sourdough with eggs, plus pancetta as an add-on (you could have either that or roasted mushrooms). it was generally a nice dish, however i found the pancetta quite overpowering. the poached eggs were quite inconsistent across everyone's dishes as some centres were very soft and others quite firm. i felt that they could have been fluffier as well. for a drink, i had hot chocolate (there's not much else when you don't drink coffee, is there?) and it was awesome! hubby ordered the vegetarian breakfast, which was essentially the same as the big breakfast dish, only

trendy cafe. devonport certainly needed a trendy hang out and laneway seems to have filled that void (and also paved the way for other small venues to open up in this coastal town). unfortunately, the quality of the coffee, food and service is inconsistent. it is great to see the owners supporting the locals by stocking and selling local produce i.e. cheeses, cured meats, condiments and alcohol etc.

fantastic coffee, great eggs, great sour dough, very hip.. and in devonport as well.. a great way to flush that disgusting spirit of tasmania food out of ones system.. ;-)

without a doubt, the best cup of coffee in tasmania. having just spent 7 weeks on the island state drinking numerous cups of milky, tasteless coffee, i can speak from experience.

although the setting and staff are nice it doesn't make up for coffee that is inconsistent and breakfast that leaves a bit to be desired. have been a few times and have never gone away thinking its great. head to playfish for good coffee.

great breakfast. we had breakfast after coming off the overnight ferry from melbourne. great food (the eggs were particularly good) and the coffee spot on. the menus had enough variety for a family of four (including one vego). really friendly staff.

the coffee is good. they use a brand i’ve never heard of: bristot. it was good – and very welcome after a bass strait crossing...the interesting thing about the ricotta pancakes was that the ricotta was not actually in the pancakes (that we could tell anyway) – but rather on top. this meant that the pancakes were a bit more middle of the road than they could have been. however, full points for the triple topping of lemon curd, ricotta, and blueberry compote. it was a great combo that saved the dish.

well worth a visit. i caught up with friends here today prior to heading to the airport for my trip home. great coffee - all of us ended up having two cups. there is an all-day breakfast menu plus a few lunch items. i had the avocado mashed with fetta on toast which came with a poached egg and crispy pancetta. my companions chose the eggs benedict with salmon and the ricotta hotcakes respectively. all three dishes were excellent.

that this gem exists in devonport is somewhat surprising, but it is a much needed addition to the north-west - and judging by the number of customers, the locals agree!

apparently they open at 7:30am so if you are coming off the ferry, head here for breakfast.
