kunga is a small tibetan food join in the heart of the darjeeling market, next to ramada hotel. timings on zomato says 8 am to 9.30 pm. but the place takes the last order at 6.30 pm so please ensure u go before 6.30 pm. since we reached at 8.30 pm. the food is simply amazing! i think i have never had such tibetan food before, the poke momo’s were very flavourful and juicy, the thukpa, the noodles everything was very delicious. please note that the quantity is huge, a plate of mono serves 10 giant momo’s so be careful while ordering. and the price is extremely reasonable. the quality of food is very good too, i say this because i was the last person to leave therestaurantand even the people working were having the food cooked from the same kitchen !

a place that i was waiting to visit since long. had the chance this time and tried chili pork with mixed fried rice and fresh lime soda. 1plate is enough for two people. it cost us around 600 and it's really cheap out there. the food tastes too good. a must visit for every non-vegetarian and meat-lover. since therestaurantis not a big one, in festival season, you might have to wait outside therestaurantfor hours but can assure that the wait is worthy enough.

during our trip to darjeeling, i asked our guide about a local eatery where we can have lunch & taste the popular local foods & got to know about this place.
this tinyrestaurantnamed kunga is truly a hidden gem. if you are a fan of tibetan flavours like me, it's a must visit place..
the location is very near to ramada hotel at mall road..
we opted for:
chicken phing ( glass noodles ) with lots of veggies like carrot, simrai ( local leafy vegetable )
best to have with sweet & sour chicken.
also, we had chicken cheese steamed momos without wich our trip wouldn't be completed.
the portion amount is good enough for 2 people. also, the staffs behaviour is very homely. a must visit place.

one important point - shop timing 10am to 6 pm
(zomato showing wrong timing)

a bit over hyped, not worth the hassle.
we waited more than an hour to be seated.
since its tiny place, managing reservation is much needed. therestaurantliterally has no way to manage their reservation. where as there could've been many ways to handle like writing down names, giving token etc. but they are not bothered. total chaos outside. then someone appears and they let them in ahead of us and we are wondering whats going on.
coming to food. apart from momos, we didn't find anything great.
overall a bad experience that too off season. i am not sure what must be happening over there when tons of tourists are coming.

kunga is definitely a hidden gem of darjeeling. if you love to taste authentic tibetan foods, then this place will never disappoint you.
✴️ location : this smallrestaurantis located on the way to ramada from keventer's just beside the taxi stand.
✴️ ambiance : the dining of the place is quite small but well arranged. hygiene is properly maintained. if you are group of two, you may have to share the table with others because of the huge rush.

✴️foods : we have ordered for main course only,
☑️ chicken fried rice
☑️ pork chilly

the foods are being served within 10 to 15 minutes. both the dishes tasted superb. chicken fried rice was the best fried rice i have ever tasted in my life. it was full of veggies and chicken along with a delicious flavour. pork chilly tasted finger licking good. it was spicy, tangy and yummy. the quantity was enough for sharing between two people. quality was good enough.
✴️ service : they serve foods very prompt. the lady who was serving treated us with a big smile 😊. they serve a notepad for taking the orders and you have to write down what you are ordering for. they only take cash payment. prices are comparatively low than the other renowned restaurants in darjeeling.

so, if you are in darjeeling and you love to explore your taste buds , then you should definitely try out this budget friendly small restaurant.

when it comes to the food in darjeeling, it amazes me how people always stick to keventer's and glenary's. nothing... absolutely nothing short of "heavenly bliss" comes to mind when you get the true taste of 'queen of the hills' inside the kunga restaurant.you've got to earn the food here! quite literally. the place is small, and if you don't have the patience to wait outside for a good 15-20 minutes, you don't deserve the goodness that awaits! and when you get a seat, order anything that's there on the menu without any apprehension. there is not a single item on the menu that can drop your hopes even by a percent.just make sure to order in moderation. their portions are quite big, and you'll be proven wrong if you think a plate of any item is not large enough for two people. they will pack what you can't finish though!so when you're in darjeeling next time, make sure to visit kunga (it's right in between the clock tower and keventer's). and one last thing... therestauranttimings are not correctly listed on zomato. it opens at 10 am and shuts shop by 6:30 pm.

an absolute delicacy at the heart of darjeeling serving the best dishes at an extremely affordable price. therestaurantspecialises in tibetian cuisines.

ambience: a small place with a seating capacity of 10-15 people. minimally decorated and polite staffs compliment the smooth service at the place. the owner is also good.

the food we tried-
pork steamed momo:
10 pieces of large sized momos were given in a plate. the momos were filled with ample amount of meat and tasted great. the best steamed momo i ever had. soup wasn't provided with it. a must try tibetian delicacy.
thukpa:
the mix thukpa had all types of meat in it and sufficient amount of noodles with a really tasty and healthy soup. the quantity of a plate is sufficient for 3 people. it was delicious in taste as well.

altogether a great food joint in darjeeling. a must visit for everyone. but one thing should be kept in mind that you might have to wait for 30mins to get a table in rush hours.

happy fooding!!
