i'm a frequent diner here. the service is great most of the time but still inconsistent. it seems like they're short staffed on random days because they're all college students. overall, thefood(especially the hibachi) is great and as for the servers, i think they are decent hard working kids trying their best to please the customers.

very disappointed. if this is the best that richmond has to offer in the way of japanese hibachi, i feel sorry for the city. i felt that kobe ranked pretty low in the list of hibachi restaurants i have been to in my life. first, the food.
my date and i started with some green tea, which was excellent (genmaicha, if my taste buds serve me correctly). the water was off-tasting city water that required a slice of lemon to cut the industrial taste. rather than a light, airy tempura batter, the greasy, limp vegetable ... thing that came out reminded me of something you would find at a southern diner. the thinly sliced sweet potato was limp and flavorless. the hamachi kama, however was fairly good, with a nice char on the outside and nicely cooked yellowtail inside - highly recommended.
however, the main meal was a let-down. i ordered the hibachi lobster with a side of scallops. the starter soup was probably supposed to be miso, but it reminded me of something out of a red and white can. no subtle miso flavor, no tofu; just an overpowering, tinny chicken broth accompanied by sliver of mushroom. the salad was not much better - standard iceberg lettuce with a flavorless and water attempt at a ginger dressing.
all that aside, the absolute let down was the lobster. although cooked ok, the delicate lobster flavor was annihilated by an overabundance of shoyu, rendering nearly inedible. the scallops that followed were slightly undercooked, although there was some flavor to them.
the highlight of a hibachi restaurant is supposed to be the chef - traditionally a combination of chef and entertainer. our chef had some moderate skills, but really didn't impress. the show contained a few staples (egg-hat toss,foodin the mouth toss, onion volcano), but nothing that would have made it stand out above even the most average show.
i felt like this was the kind of cattle-car commercial joint whose main concern was "get-'em-in; get-'em-out" rather than concentrating on a good (or even moderate) hibachi experience. i won't be back

great food!. i've been to many different hibachi restaurants before, but this was my first time at kobe.
thefoodwas excellent and i highly recommend the sushi - very fresh and flavorful. the hibachi was also excellent.
but the service didn't match the rest of the experience. our waiter seemed nervous, scattered, and overwhelmed. maybe it was his first day. i think the only reason he got our orders right was because we had to point to it on the menu. i could tell he was trying really hard but he was slow and we could hardly hear what he was saying.
i will probably go back to kobe because thefoodis excellent and reasonably priced... and hopefully that poor waiter has more experience by then!

it is really true about people complaining with waitresses however i found it very reasonable when i got to know that kobe is one of the restaurants that support college students by hiring them. and foods are delicious! and it is well worth waiting. hibachi usually take long time and plus with performance = more time. i don't know why people don't eat up-stair if don't want to wait for hibachi.. because they do hibachi upstair too. i want to give kobe 5 stars

i completely love kobe. even though there needs to be some adjustments among waiters, thefoodquality is really good and fresh. you must try before you review something.

terrible service. i don't write restaurants reviews because i used to work in the service industry i know and acknowledge the challenges faced day in and day out. whenever i have a bad experience i just don't cross that restaurant out because it could have been the cook, server or simply just a bad day, which doesn't excuse it as i have higher standards. however, again by knowing first-hand the challenges face i tend to give another opportunity to see if the restaurant, staff,foodquality or management have redeem themselves.

well, i gave kobe two opportunities and both were just terrible to the point i feel compelled to write this long bad review to detail my experiences and to warn you, this may happen to you. i picked the restaurant for my birthday celebration and my husband made a reservation for the whole family. it's the weekend of san patrick's and they can’t find my reservation, nor will one be available within 45 minutes or so. we were able to secure another reservation at la grotta. no apologies and no sympathy. as we are getting ready to leave suddenly a reservation was cancelled and they were able to accommodate us. it's already 8pm for an original 7:30pm reservation. also for a large group and a child, you bet we always make reservations for these types of events. the place was dirty, trash on the floor, dirty curtains covering chairs, boxes, just a mess that everyone can see so no need to have half dirty curtains.

the place was super-hot throughout the night. the ventilation was poor. certainly not conducive of a nice dinner with family. maybe the venue wasn't the right choice to begin with. the salad dressing is just tangy and leaves a bad after taste. not like your usual ginger sauces in other hibachi places. thefoodwas okay. nothing glamorous and perhaps a little greasy. the filet mignon and scallops were excellent.

few weeks after i went to kobe again for a co-worker's birthday celebration. this time i didn’t make any of my co-workers aware of my prior experience as i wanted to be opened minded. again, same lack of customer service when greeting you. just not welcoming with a southern charm as other rva restaurants. we wanted hibachi but we had to decide between express or with the “show”. since we were celebrating of course we picked the show. we were out of there an hour and half later at lunch time on a friday. the grill wasn’t on and when we arrived the couple in our same area had already been waiting for 20 minutes. not a good sign for starters. on a friday and pay date, they didn’t have pepsi or diet pepsi. we had to pick between sierra mist, water or tea. few of my co-workers picked tea which had to be returned because it looks like someone’s pee on a glass literally. it was like warm sewage water with no ice. pretty disgusting. after 40 minutes wait, we advise the server that we wanted to be moved to the express table and suddenly the chef appeared.foodwas consistent and was actually good. salad dressing again sour and tangy. what probably was extremely upsetting was that 8 people out of the 10 people at the hibachi got their tickets wrong. first server leaves with my credit card and took her like 10 minutes to come back. my ticket was fine but she just returned my credit card with no slip, so i wasn’t sure if she had run it or not. i asked her but she wasn’t able to answer. while this is happening everyone else realized that their tickets didn’t match to what they ate. even involving the manager she was to frazzle to even be in control of the situation. definitely will not go there again for dinner or hibachi. i do hear their sushi menu is fantastic and perhaps may try that sometime for lunch again. for a restaurant that has been in richmond for this long, cleanliness certainly is concerning. very messy and dirty place. if that is the front of the house, i can’t only imagine the back of the house- and this coming from someone that has managed restaurants before.

pitifully small portions. this is my second time eating at kobe. i purchased a groupon for my daughter's birthday dinner. big mistake! the portions were not substantial to begin with and with the groupon significantly decreased in size. the sushi portions were pitifully small. someone should advise management that the purpose of these types of promotions is to attract customers. a customer should leave feeling as if they got a deal and wanting to return based on quality offoodand service. even with my groupon discount i felt like i was ripped off.

terrible service. thefoodis good, but the waitress was no where to be found, our cocktails took 25 minutes, the chef thought he was on american idol because he not only sang us one of his songs but gave us an entire history of his singing career. i remember him from kenji, he tried to get us to buy his cd while we were eating dinner. he was inappropriate then at kenji and at kobe. when we finally found our waitress to get our checks that process took another 45 minutes. i eventually had to go upstairs and ask someone else to help us, they still messed up on multiple checks ( adding a bottle of wine, double charging) i was one step away from complaing to the manager, there were maybe 5 other tables filled in the entire restaurant so it wasnt even close to busy. not only will i never go back, i will tell all my friends to never go.

will never go back. i just left the downtown location and could not be more upset with our experience. we (party of 4) went in and waited 5 minutes before anyone would look at us to seat us. it was busy so we offered to sit at the bar. it took 10 minutes before anyone came over to bring us water. when i asked a question about one of the lunch specials, the gentleman (who later identified himself as the manager) shoved a menu at me and said "it even has pictures for you". half our party wanted to order the hibachi special but were told with only 2 chefs, there would be a long wait. they both amended their order to what we were old was the "quick" option. we placed our order and then waited. and waited. and waited. when we were finally able to flag the manager back down he rolled his eyes and informed us that he wasn’t our server. after another 10 minutes a girl brought us some soup and salad. we at that point told her we needed our order boxed up and our checks as it had already been an hour. another 15 minutes went by and she was mia. i finally asked for the manager and was told he would go to the kitchen and see what the delay was. he walked away and went to the front of the house. when i walked over to him he informed me that he had to find our server to ask about ourfoodas he would have no idea where our ticket may be. at that point i informed the manager we would be leaving. he rolled his eyes and tried to tell me we couldn’t. i asked who the general manager or owner was and he told me there wasn’t one because it is a privately owned establishment. instead of trying to explain to him what that meant, we left. hungry and frustrated. i will never return.

wow is all i can truly say. the service was horrendous. i got my sushi mere minutes before the chef came out and then she got the order wrong. not to include the fact that we waited for 20 mins after done eating before we got our check. my child was trying to interact with the chef and he pretty much ignored him. thefoodwas okay, nothing great. it was also incredibly overpriced. will i go again? oh no. i wouldn't even recommend it to friends.

good food, bad experience. four of us went on a sat evening. the server seemed out of it. the edamame appetizer came out after our soup/salad course. the first entree came at least 15 minutes before the others. she came back to the table at least 20 minutes after placing our orders to tell us that one of the entrees was not available. after this, the 2nd entree came out and it was another 10 minutes before the final 2 came out. note: 2 of these entrees were sushi and 1 was cold noodles. one diner got a steak and had to wait 5 minutes for a knife. there was a large (probably family) group with several children, who ran and screamed around the restaurant. thefoodwas tasty, but the portions were small. won't be going back.

excellent. we have tried numerous japanese restaurants in the area looking for authentic japanesefood(we are from ny) kobe is the closest to authentic japanesefoodthat we have found in the richmond area. their terriyaki, hibachi, and tempura are excellent. haven't had the sushi but i'm sure it is delicious as well. we live in short pump and drive down to the bottom just for the food.

not bad. i was a bit hesitant to try this place due to complaints about the service, but i was pleasantly surprised. my waiter was attentive and friendly,and the hibachi chef was very generous with the portions. thefoodwas pretty good, but it did leave a bit to be desired compared to other hibachi places. the sushi i had was also pretty average in quality. overall, a pretty good meal and good service, and the atmosphere seemed very relaxed. i would go here again.

first hibachi and sake, so much fun! our guy alan was great,foodwas just as good. so much fun, definitely go with friends.
