hey dolls, i pray that everyone had a fantastic thanksgiving holiday!  i most certainly did.  i traveled to louisiana to spend the holiday with family.  on my way to grandma's, i decided to spend a few hours in the french quarters of new orleans!  and what's a trip to the nola without beignets and poboys right!??!  soooo... my first stop was the infamous cafe du monde! if you have ever heard of foods synonymous with new orleans, you've probably heard the words gumbo, jambalaya, pralines, and of course beignets ("ben-yays").  cafe du monde is the original french market coffee stand that has been in existence since 1862.  the fact that they've been around so long ought to tell you something about their likability! they only serve these delectable french-style doughnuts and coffee (soda and oj too)....that's got to be one of my favorite combinations! i got the standard order of beignets, which comes with three, and a cafe au lait which is coffee mixed half and half with hot milk.   if you

i've been a johnny's fan since i had my first po-boy here 40 years ago. but i'm afraid it has changed since then. day old bread. skimpy on the tomato. cold oysters. at $15.00 for a single po-boy, i expect the best. i always worry that a place has gone tourist when they explain back what's on a dressed po-boy as if you don't know what you just ordered.

ok poboys. i guess i should have done my homework before going... i heard everyone talking about a hot sausage poboy... omg, that was a waste of money. i could have pressed together 2 rudy farm sausages and had a better meal. the roast beef poboy is just ok.. didn't eat the shrimp but they do load the sandwich with shrimp. seems like this is a better breakfast spot than anything. nothing to write home about.

damn good po'boy. i had to have a real po'boy while i was in new orleans and i decided this was the place to have it. i'm definitely happy with my decision. the place is pretty small and it seems they run out of food well before they close, so make sure to get there early.
i went with the half alligator sausage po'boy with a side of gumbo. the half po'boy was pretty big and it had a good amount of tasty gator sausage. the sausage had some good spice to it and a nice snap to it's casing. the gumbo was also delicious and had a huge helping of shrimp to it (at least 5 good size shrimp).
if you're looking for a good new orleans po'boy, then you can't go wrong with this place!

they close at 4:30pm...we got there at 4 and they were out of shrimp for the shrimp po~boy...so get there early! we ate the alligator sausage po~boy and gumbo~both were good but did have some gi consequences later! there's a paper menu with more description than the counter board~look at that before placing your order!

if you buy into the notion that a long line means good food...then head down to johnny's. it is literally shoulder to shoulder in this place, but they hustle to serve some of the best sandwiches anywhere. you can get a variety of sandwiches served on either french bread (po-boy), large bun, or triple decker texas toast. i have tried po-boy and triple decker and you cannot go wrong with either one. bring cash, an appetite, and a little patience. you got to have johnny's if you come to the quarter.

autocorrect got me. they have the best gumbo we tried.

-----27 jul, 2012-----

this was the only place we made time to go to twice while in nola. that is because they had the best humbled we ate while there. i also loved the shrimp po-boy. i absolutely crave this place and can't wait to go back.

so sad this place was not good. i had been looking forward to eating here because of all the reviews. staff was rude, food was bland and flavourless. ive sadly had better gumbo from a campbells can.. it was salty and gross and i ate two bites. the po'boy was nothing to write home about and you have to pay extra for shredded lettuce and a tiny slice of tomato. the best thing about this place was the soft drink. i don't know what all the good reviews are about. i will not be back :(

this place was crowded, some staff were friendly enough but most were not. the alligator sausage po boy was tasty and the bread was good. the gumbo was a different matter. the gumbo was salty and tasted like some terrible canned gravy. the iced tea was horribly over sweetend. if you go here, stick to the po boys.
