the best. hands down, the bestpo-boyi have ever eaten. i highly recommend the fully dressed "johnny's special" (beef with grilled ham, american and swiss cheese, and lettuce, tomatoes, pickles & mayo). well worth the wait and well worth the mess you'll make eating it. my wife and i split one because we thought they were huge... don't do that - get your own; you won't regret it.

i have never found a single place anywhere that serves quite the number, variety and sheer crazy types of po'boy sandwiches as i have seen advertised on the wall at johnny's po-boys.  and still, a seafoodpo-boyis excellent and even better with bacon.

perfectpo-boysandwich!! do not miss this place. cash only-so be prepared.

roast beef is to die for and the standard for which my family and i judge all other rb po-boys by.

there will be a line...it moves quicker than you'd think. these guys have dealt with "that line" forever and know how to keep it going.

johnny's may not be the shiniest place or the most famous place...but it is pure nola!

roast beefpo-boyand gumbo!!! busy, fast and tasty. this is a decent value and the experience of eating at a new orleans pop spot is fun. the shrimppo-boywas ok but the roast beef was best.

johnny's po-boys serves typical cajun "fast food" grub. we had two po-boys, alligator sausage and cajun blackened chicken. both were very tasty, however, the shrimp gumbo that accompanied the alligator sausagepo-boywas, quite simply, terrible. it tasted like swamp water. the shrimp were pale and bland and the seasoning was poorly executed. a total waste of money.

at johnny's po-boys, it is of course imperative that you get a po-boy, a casual new orleans sandwich with meat stuffed inside french bread. the only question is what kind? with several dozen varieties to choose from, it is not an easy decision to make. i was intrigued by the alligator sausagepo-boyspecial , with half of an alligator sausage po-boy, seafood gumbo, and a drink.

i've been a johnny's fan since i had my firstpo-boyhere 40 years ago. but i'm afraid it has changed since then. day old bread. skimpy on the tomato. cold oysters. at $15.00 for a single po-boy, i expect the best. i always worry that a place has gone tourist when they explain back what's on a dressedpo-boyas if you don't know what you just ordered.

if you buy into the notion that a long line means good food...then head down to johnny's. it is literally shoulder to shoulder in this place, but they hustle to serve some of the best sandwiches anywhere. you can get a variety of sandwiches served on either french bread (po-boy), large bun, or triple decker texas toast. i have triedpo-boyand triple decker and you cannot go wrong with either one. bring cash, an appetite, and a little patience. you got to have johnny's if you come to the quarter.

master judge. finally got to johnny's for an oysterpo-boytoday. when i arrived just before lunch, there was no line and the service was really fast. thepo-boywas all i had hoped it would be, great breaded oysters and a lot of them, pillow soft bread, with full dressing, yum. by the time i had finished to meal, the line was out the door and orders were coming out of the assembly space fast and furious. the noticeable thing about the line was, no tourists, all locals (the tourists haven't been told since ten minutes later as i went past the central grocery, the line was halfway down the block, all tourists). this place is worth a trip all by itself. great food, good service, great atmosphere, doesn't get any better than that.

not as good as hoped, but good.. rave reviews on urbanspoon led us to think we were in for something amazing. what we got was something solid and tasty, but not overwhelming.

place was packed, portions were big. halfpo-boywith gumbo side was good.po-boywas decent but not terribly flavorful, gumbo served with it tasty but no seafood (and they don't claim otherwise).

combo specials all come with a fountain drink, which if you don't drink them, doesn't give you any value. would be nice if there were combos that didn't dictate the drink.

nobody at johnny's is sweating reviews, the place is jimmy jammed. it's pretty good.

crowded, but worth it. it's best to hit it just outside the normal rush if you don't want a huge crowd. that being said, thepo-boydoesn't get any better than the johnny's po-boy. and, don't be afraid to go a bit afield for the more creative ones - they are all absolutely terrific.

this place gets very busy and crowded but the line moves fairly fast. there is a lot of jostling for position as everyone patiently awaits their order. there is seating in the front which can be hectic to say the least. there is seating in the rear which is much more tame. and there are sweets and treats upstairs - ice creams, desserts, candy, etc. i had the shrimp po-boy, dressed, on french bread with a sweet tea. shrimp had a nice, crispy batter with some cajun seasoning, but not spicy at all. it was just a little bit over salted for me; otherwise, thepo-boywas good. humongous. don't see how one person can eat that whole thing on their own! at $10.50, it's a bargain. the sweet tea was very sweet. overall, i think the food was good, just don't think it's really worth a long wait. try it if the line isn't too far out the door; otherwise, catch it next time when the wait is reasonable.
