huey's on the river

good food, slow service. my husband and i had dinner at huey's last pm. we were seated in the bar area by the hostess. we had a great view of the river and the ships. our food was verygoodbut the service was slow. our waiter had two tables inside plus three outside and he seemed to be unable to keep up. we ordered the french onion soup and the gumbo as starters. both were verygoodbut we had to wait quite a while for it to appear. for dinner i had the red beans and rice which was spicy and creamy just like they should be. my husband had the jambalaya pasta which had large chunks of sausage, chicken, and shrimp in it. he said it wad very good. very large portions of both were served. two people could split one entree and be completly satisfied. over all we would go back again, but would probably ask to be seated in the actual dining room rather than the bar.

spectacular view. my hubby had breakfast here (he's an early riser) as it was convenient to our hotel. he raved about howgoodit tasted. together we popped in for some light fare before the dinner crowd on a saturday. we were seated near the windows and enjoyed watching the boats and people pass along river street.

i enjoyed the coating on the fried green tomatoes, but prefer a different type of sauce (which was like a 1000 island dressing). i got a crock of french onion soup, which had a nice beefy broth and lots of onions. the cheese and bread in the soup were average.

hubby got the gumbo and was surprised by the portion size. he said it tasted good.

overall, huey's met our needs, and seemed to be better than many of the others along river street.

good vegeterian food available here... i loved taste and style...goodservants and verygoodservice they provided us and i loved the idea of outdoor seating....

this place was pretty good. not asgoodas people told me. but pretty good. the location is key. right on river street with a great view. the hostess was horrible. i sat there and watched whole groups wait to be helped as she was in the back talking. i had 3 waiters during dinner and they were a little disorganized as they ended up bringing two of what i ordered. i think they need to work on communication. beignets were just okay. nothing to write home about.

reallygoodservice and the food was amazing! we had everything from crawfish ettouffee, gumbo, shrimp and grits, crab cakes, bread pudding, and beignets.

we've been here a few times now and it doesn't disappoint. the atmosphere is fun because it's right on river street and while there are very few (like 2) outdoor tables the restaurant front is all windows so you can see the river and boats passing through. the fried green tomatoes are delicious with a sauce drizzled on top. we were a group of 6 and everyone was pleased with their meals. i thought the fried shrimp wasgoodbut i did try the hamburger special with bacon and jam and it was really good, great flavor. not much seating so if you're going during prime eating time or in tourist season you may have a wait but it's worth it. and it's not really over-priced..pretty much the saw as any other restaurant downtown.

huey's had been on my list of 'must try' places on river street due to the raving reviews that i have read. we went there on a saturday evening and the restaurant was fully occupied. we were told that there would be a 20-25 minute wait and we decided to be patient, hoping that it would be well worth it.

much like the reviews below, i have to say that the place was extremely loud. so it is not the ideal place if you want to have agoodconversation with your dinner companions. in terms of the interior, it is one of the better decorated places in savannah. it was clean and the views of bustling river street and the water were soothing. 

i decided to try the shrimp and scallop thermidor. the rest of my group went with pan seared scallops, shrimp and grits and pasta jambalaya. the salads that accompanied the meals were delicious. my thermidor was a little underwhelming as i would have preferred to have my shrimps and scallops seared before they were added to the pasta. however, there were generous amounts of shrimps and scallops in the dish. the pan seared scallops were full of flavour and seared to perfection. the grits were delicious too. 

although the food did not live up to my expectations, i give them a 3.5 because the atmosphere exceeded my expectations. i look forward to returning to huey's to try some of their other popular dishes.

the spinach artichoke app was delicious and i've never tasted suchgoodspinach artichoke dip. my shrimp and grits were seasoned perfectly and the cook was great. highly recommend both.

i love a taste of new orleans and this was a verygoodtaste. i'd recommend it in a second. enjoy.

huey's best breakfast on river street. huey’s is always on top. when you go for breakfast you have to order at least a dozen beignets with powdered sugar. if you have kids get two dozen, they we like the sugar high. if you or the kids need more sugar get the sugared pecan side that goes with the beignets. other restaurants may be empty but huey’s is always filled. if there is a wait, it will be worth the wait. we had a party of four. my two friends had omelets. the omelets are high and fluffy. you can get them filled with your favorite accompaniment. my lovely wife had the crab cake benedict. she raved on and on about howgoodthey were. i had the eggs blackstone. this is eggs benedict with a broiled tomato slice. i have to say my wife can make a perfect poached egg and i make the perfect hollandaise sauce. so when i go to a restaurant that is high volume i am always concerned that the rush will turn out hard eggs and poor sauce, not the case at huey’s. perfect eggs and hollandaise sauce.

lookedgoodfrom the outside. had the andouille sausage with red beans and and rice. it looked like it had been under the warmer all day. i could hang wall paper with the beans. they were all mush. wife had the gumbo with pastsa. again a bowl of mush. generally we found the food in savannah to be some of the worst in america. one place we found off the beaten track was the crystal beer parlour. great staff and great value tasty food.

great food on the river walk. we were visting family in the savannah area over the thanksgiving holidays, and touring the river street area. some of the family wanted to eat at the cotton exchange, but the foodies in the group held out for huey's. great choice. everyone got something different, and there were no complaints from anyone. i had the shrimp and scallops in thermador souce, which was excellent. the fried green tomato's are asgoodas i have had anywhere. my wife had the crawfish etouffee which is loaded with crawfish. we go to new orleans frequently, and this was asgoodas anything we have ever had in new orleans. don't miss this place, but be prepared for a wait to get in. even in the off season, we had about a twenty minute wait.
