have you ever heard of mastic ice cream? ... me neither! but since visiting hakiki turkish ice cream & baklava, i was so interested in finding out more about turkish ice cream and i came across these words. mastic ice cream or dondurma is made of mastic or arabic gum and a salep from dried orchid powder and these are what make the ice cream's stretchy and chewy texture. ...oh, did i just bore you?
other than the texture that is definitely not your usual ice cream texture, i also love the flavour. you'll find your favourite turkish desserts flavour here like turkish delight and baklava, but you'll also find your classic and familiar flavour like chocolate. and once in a while if you're lucky, you get to see the guy hand-churning the ice cream inside the lids next to the ice cream counter.
the place is very intimate with not many seats inside and outside. so, i recommend to take away rather than eating in. unless you want to enjoy their delightful turkish coffee that they serve with turkish delight on the side. or having your moment while enjoying what i think is the best baklava in sydney that i've tasted up to this point! then, yes, it's so worth to wait for your table.
