the food and pastries were both amazing. i loved the little butter cookie that they give you with your coffee. the coffee had great flavor and paired perfectly with the apple danish. my boyfriend's omelette with the gruyere cheese was top notch, the caramelized onions added a nice sweetness. the service was fast and friendly.

first of all, bakery should be a different review. we loved the bakery and will be back often. the apple crostata is to die for.

second, the restaurant...service is terrible! staff is arrogant, slow, and forgetful. food is absolutely not authentic. the "german potato salad" is missing 3-4 ingredients from every recipe i've ever seen. steak was over salted. we wanted dessert really bad but after the cranky service we decided we didn't want to pay $9 per person for dessert. doubt i'll be back. the spätzle came out cold and was flavorless.

10/12: i was here with my team for a dinner. we had sausages, mussels, cheese for starter. i ordered a lamb shank for entrée. highly recommended place for food and beer. for service i would say they have a scope for improvement..otherwise a nice place.

after visiting guglhupf, it seems like a nice place to grab a lunch/brunch bite, drink some coffee in the afternoon, or to study. i was really impressed by the environment- very laid back, nice decorations, and there were options for inside seating upstairs and downstairs as well as outside seating. they offered a number of options when we went for lunch and had quite a few pastries in the display case.
i ordered the schnitzel, my girlfriend ordered the southwestern omelet, and we split an apple danish from the case. my schnitzel was fried perfectly. it was still tender on the inside but had a nice crust. it lacked seasoning or flavor, however, and the salad it came with was just a basic set of greens. my girlfriend's omelet was a pretty standard omelet. i don't like eggs much, but it seemed very average and she agreed. the danish was good and had a really nice flaky crust. the apples were really tart, and we both would've preferred something sweeter, but the flakiness of the pastry was spot on. based on this, i would think that a lot of the scones, muffins, cookies, etc. here are probably very high quality but i'll have to come back and try some more options to see!

unfortunately finding a duo of cookies to be a bit too crisp for my own personal tastes, while the sugar to butter ratio trended a touch to sweet for my mother, it was with the restaurant’s eponymous item that our breakfast concluded and opting for a ‘small’ loaf that was first sliced at the table and then picked at throughout the day it should only be said that the sizable austrian bundt is every bit worthy its ‘signature’ status, each yeasty bite featuring subtle citrus tones beneath the crunchy caster sugar exterior while raisins, nuts, and other dried fruits punctuated the experience with explosive bits of flavor amidst all the wispy eggs, flour, and butter.

very overrated and disappointing. located in a very bad section in durham. the chocolate pastry looked beautiful but had no taste . service is slow and food is overpriced. definitely not worth the high ratings.

this pan roasted chicken receipe simply melts in your mouth. the german dumplings sneak up on your taste buds and give them a gentle burst of flavor as you savor the wild rice and spring onions! ....omg!

the guglhupf bakery in durham is a bakery, pâtisserie and café with a german twist. featuring plates like bratwurst with sauerkraut and a schnitzel option on their lunch menu, there is more standard fare available as well; grilled panini sandwiches, salads and a typical club. or you can opt for a roasted beet sandwich, a frittata, or a käseplatte-cheese assortment. i chose to try the smoked salmon, served with a bread basket, hard-boiled egg, cornichons, capers and red onions. my mocha was delicious, the salmon was great, but the two boys who wouldn’t eat their grilled cheese sandwich and threatened to wreak havoc in the beautiful dining room changed what would have been an excellent dining experience into fast food. it’s too bad we are not in the durham area more often, as i would like to try guglhupf for dinner, or sample the various fresh breads, pastries, cakes and tarts that were on display.

definitely a place to go to enjoy the atmosphere and drink a coffee and munch on a croissant but not the place to go for lunch if you want anything special. breakfast was your typical boring breakfast items that i could make just as well and for cheaper at home. lunch had some decent sandwiches but nothing that will blow your too off. have not tried dinner here yet but wouldn't be opposed.

meh. we had the omelet and the fritata and they were both greasy and overcooked. the atmosphere was great on the patio but the food ws underwhelming.

had late lunch yesterday and the experience was sub-par. ordering was slow (took 9 minutes with only one person in front of me), beer order was wrong (only two choices, still missed it), sandwiches delivered 15 minutes later. french dip was dry and tasteless, rare tuna sandwich wasn't rare and when returned, was cooked exactly as before--- too much. we asked to have that item removed from the bill and were told, 'too bad' . and this was for a birthday celebration. great venue, fabulous looking crowd, but the food isn't interesting or good and the service is decidedly uninspired.

great food, great atmosphere. great brunch. everything was very high quality, nice atmosphere. it was our first time, so maybe we were missing something, but we found seating to be a bit hectic: find a table and try to save it while also waiting in line to order at the counter? still, very happy. the coffee was tops and came with a little butter cookie. we went to the adjacent bakery and got some of the same cookies ($16/lb) and fresh bread.

nope. mediocre charcuterie, some good breads, but no real quality baked goods. my wife has tried a couple of the sandwiches and likes them, but i haven't been too impressed with anything there.

food this good deserves better than paper tablecloths or shorts-sneakers which i saw in the dining room. and while i’m not the absolute biggest fan of german food, i really did love my meal at guglhupf. they stay true to their roots without being stuffy or boring. no skinny-minny hostess up front in a short dress with an attitude
