curious about the name guglhupf, of guglhupf bakery and cafe , i gugl-ed it. basically it’s a german fruit/nut bundt-type cake. need to know more? read this . we thought we’d live dangerously and go for sunday brunch . luckily the weather cooperated so lots of people chose to sit outside on guglhupf’s expansive patio, leaving a half dozen empty tables inside. inside seats 100 people also – just to give you some perspective. that sounds like a crowd, but guglhupf is laid out in a way that camouflages those 200 diners with creative architecture. the feel is cozy inside and out. when i ordered a latte with my breakfast, i was asked to wait and pick it up at the counter before heading to our table. pic ordered a coffee and was handed a fun cup-saucer-biscuit combo. he filled the cup at nearby pots. my latte came with a biscuit on the saucer. first to arrive at our upstairs table was a basket of fantastic guglhupf bakery breads. the problem with this is that it pained me not to be able to e

despite my love of all things almond, the granola didn't win me over. strangely it's a little too sweet and salty, especially if used as a topping for fruit yogurt.

a must. this is, hands down, my favorite restaurant. i try to go every time i'm in the raleigh-durham area. the schnitzel, pork shank, pasta with wild mushrooms--they all blow me away. the bakery also makes consistently top-notch breads and pastries.

still can't pronounce the name though.

pronouncing this restaurant'€™s name is not easy ( guglhupf derives its moniker from a german specialty cake), but don'€™t let that stop you from heading to durham for a distinctive dining experience. while the restaurant serves lunch and dinner, breakfast/brunch is my favorite meal served here. and for good reason. take, for instance, the wild mushroom omelet with sauteed leeks and emmenthaler cheese. or maybe it's the breakfast cheese plate with st. andre cheese, seasonal fruit and assorted fresh breads. then there's the swoon-worthy chocolate croissant that all by itself is worth the price of admission. photo courtesy of jonathan fredin/s&a cherokee proprietor claudia cooper, who hails from heilbronn, germany, has seen the small bakery she opened in 1998 evolve into a full-scale restaurant. the bakery still thrives, but now an open, two-level dining room and spacious patio provide patrons abundant room to relax and enjoy themselves in a bona fide european-style cafã©. guglhupf impo

this is a unique place, with things i really like and things i really don't like. first let me say i wish the place was full service and that about covers all the dislikes. the witing in long lines and crowded counters and beverage areas can get too congested. plus you have to fetch your own silverware. still this place i like a lot because of the outdoor seating replete with trickling fountains, pastry shop, delightful beer selection and fresh delicious german food. friendly folks too. german potato salad is excellent!

while there, we dined at guglhupf. loved it. the cheese dish with figs was phenomenal, and i really like german beer. i felt as if i had been transported to munich again. i recommend the restaurant highly.

this place is top-notch. lunch was excellent, the pastries and desserts are as well. i think the mass amount of reviews of this place speaks to that. my wife and i will absolutely keep going here, it puts most places to shame.

amazing bakery, cafe service was less than stellar. my husband and i adore guglhupf's bakery! if we didn't mind weighing 500 lbs, we'd eat there every day! with that being said, their cafe service was not that great. we went there one time and the staff was excellent. the second time we went, we waited forever to place our order, we got the wrong sides and our waiter barely gave us the time of day. he kept passing by our table, looking straight us and didn't even bother to come over to see if we needed anything the entire time we were dining. i honestly don't know if we'll be back to the cafe, but we will certainly be back for the bakery!!

some details?. @jadeinus:
some details of your experience might help. you make some vague statements about "rude customer service" and not being helped by the manager, along with the usual self-important bs about being "regular customers."

i can't tell you how often i've witnessed that from customers with an entitled attitude who are in the wrong.

without details, your "review" comes off, at best, as a rant; at worst, it lacks enough specificity that it sounds fake.

maybe that's why the comment was deleted on fb?

not meaning this as a personal attack (i have no idea who you are, if the story is true, etc.). just saying this review isn't helpful at all without more details of the situation.

even a simple explanation of what you consider to be "rude" service would be informative.

guglhupf's rude customer service. here is the comment i just wrote on guglhupf's facebook right after realizing my husband david's complaint got deleted by them.

really shame on them!!

a good restaurant will accept compliments and complaints!!
i am just so disappointed!!! after not hearing any words from their owner for over 2 months. we sent her an email in details to describe how we had witnessed and self experienced the rude customer services they had provided despite being a such loyal regulars of theirs for over 2 years since we moved to durham. we just can't believe it!!

my words on guglhupf's facebook today:
"you guys are so unbelievable!! you only take good compliments but can't accept once loyal customers complaints?? we were very very regular of yours ( we had been going to your bakery and cafe every 2~3 times a week for 2 years since we moved to durham 2 years ago) until being treated so rude and didn't get any responses from your owner either.

very very disappointed!!

and you just took out my husband's complaint from your facebook! thats such terrible thing to do. people deserve to hear from different voices.
i wish it was just some staff's decision not the manager's or owner's. i wish....

how disappointed!!!
we stopped going to your bakery and cafe for quite some months only because we have waited and waited for over 2 months and still no words from your owner!!

word of mouth is a very basic factor to run a business and do it right.

i don't see that in yours!!"
