greatatmosphereand service, terrible food.. during my stay in pensacola, my party of three and i ate at three restaurants. we saved flounder's for last, and unfortunately, it disappointed. but let me state the positives first.
the first thing that strikes anyone in flounder's is the atmosphere. a giant fishing boat by the entrance sets the theme of the restaurant, which appeared to be an old fisherman's bar from the 50's that has been polished and shined and varnished to immortality. though i did not eat outside, i could hear the rumble of a live cover band through the walls, which were covered completely covered in old books and fishing gear and all sorts of paraphernalia.
the second good thing about the restaurant was the service. our waitress had a very positive demeanor, despite appearing somewhat worn from the two large families in her area, each complete with a screaming baby. she (our waitress) described each of our dishes eloquently, had a sense of humor about her, and seemed to at least somewhat enjoy working with us.
anyway, now i'll talk about the food. we ordered a cup of chowder, followed by the shrimp boat and the flounder dish (which, despite sharing the restaurant's name, was the only flounder on the menu, resulting in it being prominently displayed in the center of the middle page in the menu). the chowder was good, but the shrimp boat and flounder did not match in quality. the boiled shrimp in the boat were undercooked, while the fried shrimp were underseasoned and felt like mini-hush puppies that happened to have shrimp in them. ironically, the hush puppies were the best part of the dish.
moving on to the flounder. it was drowning in what i can only guess to be a tomato-based sauce with melted cheese on top, and stuffed with a shrimp and bread stuffing. it may have been halfway decent, had the celery not been so coarsely chopped. every other bite was drowning in the bitter stalk, such that i may as well have eaten a celery bunch to get the any taste of shrimp and fish out of my mouth.
flounder's is a restaurant that appeals to the family on vacation looking for a place to buy large quantities of fried food for their children. though the prices are somewhat reasonable, it is clear the establishment's primary customers are tourists, as i cannot imagine anyone going back for seconds.
