3 of 4 stars (good, casual dining).. (see explanation of ratings below)

funky, cluttered, dark interior. patio may be a better choice to sit (depending on the weather).

great margarita. salty lamb biria. chili relleno was too bitter.

they changed our favorite soup! different owners? different chef?

same friendly wait staff.

usually, this place is very busy. be prepared for a wait at peak times.

about my ratings:

i divide restaurants into three categories.

1) fast food and "fast-casual" (low-priced, no table service).

2) casual, mid-priced dining (table service, average entrée price: $10-$20).

3) fine, high-end dining (linen napkins, no plastic cups, no tv's in dining room, average entrée priced at more than $20, can vary depending on the city).

fine dining can earn a max of five stars. casual dining can earn a max of four stars. fast food can earn a max of three stars.

very funky atmosphere and fantastic, authentic food. not to be confused withdostaquitos centro (which is downtown), the north raleigh location has been in business for sixteen years and is still going strong! it really is unique and one of the triangle's very best. not fancy, mind you, but a very funky atmosphere and fantastic, authentic food.

some might be quick to call this "mexican" food, but there are several dishes which are more common south of mexico's border.

we've never had a bad meal here. it's one of those places that you really should take visitors because they probably have never been to any other place quite like it.

on our last visit, total bill was $97 (three diners, no dessert, one non-drinker, tip included).

we were in raleigh for the weekend. dinner atdostaquitos on a thursday night: a bit of a wait, not terrible. restaurant was crowded and noisy and dim, but we liked the decor. the salsa was weirdly sweet and the sour cream sauce on one of my enchiladas was even sweeter! the refried beans were bland. everything else--black beans, steak fajitas, child's quesadilla--was delicious. so we went back for lunch on saturday and had the worst service i have ever had in a restaurant. the server who took our order basically stopped at our table snd said, "oh, i guess i'll take your order since no one else has." seriously? there were *maybe* three occupied tables beside ours and two servers working, and we couldn't get orders taken, drinks refilled, dessert ordered...it took forever. no fun with a 2-year-old! the food was still good but i'd hardly recommend the restaurant now.

less than mediocre. to walk indostaquitos reminded me of a dark gloomy cave. the chips were stale, the salsa was revolting and we ordered a drink that featured "fresh" limes and the limes were completely dehydrated....when we asked for fresh limes, the same dry, juicless limes were returned to the table (probably due to the poor lighthing).
the wait staff is uninformed of featured specials and sadly, they only offer sweet and low...ewwwww it's2011...where the hell is the equal or splenda???
after 10 minutes, we decided this place was ridiculous and we decided to go to a real mexican restaruant who wouldn't charge us an arm and a leg for a taco.

it's been a very, very long time since i've been to a mexican restaurant. i make quesadillas all the time, but other than the occasional chipotle, this has been a side of food i've been neglecting. i set about to set this right on saturday evening. since i don't actually know much about mexican food, and i don't even speak spanish, i wanted to try and find something highly rated, while still having a menu in english. carnitas we arrived atdostaquitos at about 5:45pm. i was worried when we first came in, the outside seating looked packed. when asked if we wanted outside or inside, we just asked for the first available. they seated us inside, and i guess i should have realized pretty quickly that this was a big mistake. i have very poor night vision, and could barely find my seat. i needed my cell phone light to be able to read the menu, and it took several minutes for my eyes to adjust enough to be able to find the salsa and chips. i had to use a flash and my pictures still turned out

dos... what's happened?!?. i will start by sayingdostaquitos has been my absolutely favorite mexican restaurant in raleigh for about a decade. i love the atmosphere and the food. over the years i have seen their prices increase again and again. this is understandable, as the demand is high and economy slow. that being said, what happened?? i recently went back todosand they have made a number of changes, one of which was to reduce the portion size (and not the price) of a few entrees. come on guys, don't call an entree enchiladas and then bring out a plate with a few tiny taquitos on it! no bueno!!

authentic and just lovely. oh,dostaquitos, i dream about you at night...

i love that when you walk into this place you feel like you could be somewhere in central america. i love the crazy amounts of artwork they have displayed on the walls (including the graffiti) and the frida theme they have in the women's bathroom. it's a unique experience and that's what dining out should be.

the food and drink is obviously a big winner, too. amazing steak tacos here. whatever they marinate their steak in is to die for. their fajitas are delicious and of fresh quality, their pico de gallo and salsa are well made and i always fill up on their yummy salsa before i make it to my meal. they have a wonderful mango shake for non-drinkers and terrific margaritas that aren't watered down like a "number 16 please" typical mexican place.

i generally like the servers, too. i feel like they are friendly and cute but not invading your personal space or conversations too much. i have also found them to be helpful and actually having a valid opinion when asking them for help in ordering.

i've taken many people here for their first visit, and 90% of the time, it's a big winner. it's definitely one of my favorite places in town; the prices are very reasonable and you are getting a meal that you can't make better at home because the latina grandmother doesn't share her secret recipes with anyone...

a restaurant with some character in n. raleigh!. surprising, while situated in one of the ugliest strip shopping centers in raleigh, dostaquitos is a really cool joint. step inside and you'll appreciate the latino sanford & son decorating style. you won't find another place like it. since north raleigh is chain restaurant hell -- this place is a nice change.

food is yummy. drinks are great (especially the mojitos). i usually order from the specials on the back of the menu. every once in awhile, i've ended up with something i don't love. so, for the less adventurous, i'd suggest sticking to the regular menu.

definitely check it out.
