dish has a nice, down home feel with very solid southern food. my girlfriend and i shared the meatloaf sliders appetizer and the chicken and dumplings dish with a side of mashed sweet potatoes.
the meatloaf sliders were very good. the best part of the meal by far was the cajun spice on the meatloaf; if i come back to dish, i will probably order the meatloaf as my entree because it was excellent. the slider buns were a little dry and took away from the great meatloaf just slightly, but overall the sliders were still very good.
the chicken and dumplings were just okay in my opinion and my girlfriend's. a lot of people have raved about them being amazing, but they were definitely not life changing. the chicken was very tender and the dumplings were as well, but as a whole it wasn't extremely flavorful or memorable in any way. the mashed sweet potatoes on the side were amazing, however. nice and sweet but not too much so, and they had a little cinnamon taste that balanced it all perfectly. the biscuit was a little dry, and the deviled egg was pretty good.
overall, the food wasgoodbut not great with some things better than others. the service was solid as well, and the prices are pretty cheap, especially for the amount of food you get.

not sure how i feel after our first visit. pros and cons and it could be related to ordering off the breakfast menu. we stopped by for a quick lunch after working in the morning. i ordered huevos rancheros (why do i keep thinking i will findgoodwestern breakfasts out east?) and it was fine, but definitely not anything special. i ordered a side of biscuits and gravy and my heart sank when they came out with the typical boring pepper gravy on top. i always hope for some really good, unique, home made gravy and whenever i see that "looks like it came from a box" white stuff, im always sad. thumbs down on the biscuits and gravy. even if its not out of a box, it tastes like it is. meh. now the wife got the chicken pesto pita and it was pretty good. i came in planning to order the chicken and dumplings, maybe i should have stuck to the plan. we might go back and ill try to avoid my constant desire for a delicious brunch and order off the regular menu.

authentic southern food with a wonderful atmosphere. this is a wonderful place to eat lunch on a saturday afternoon. there is ample parking surrounding the area of plaza and midwood so that will not be an issue.
foodwise, everything was right on target. when i saw collard dip on the menu, i was extremely skeptical, but our friendly waitress told us that it was similar to spinach and artichoke dip so we delved on in. basically, i will go out of my way to say it is probably in my top five favorite appetizers of all time. you get your choice of pita bread or tortilla chips... go with the pita.
for my meal, i went with the black grilled chicken with grits and macaroni and cheese as a side. with all entrees, a deviled egg and biscuit are served as well. the mac and cheese and grits were typical of agoodrestaurant, except the prices were way more affordable. the deviled eggs tasted amazing with hints of paprika and mustard in the hard boiled egg. the chicken was the highlight by far though. it was topped with a black-eyed pea and corn salsa and really well marinated to where it remained flavorful and moist. the biscuit was also a great surprise with a sweet sugar-like topping on it.
my fiancee went with the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with deviled eggs. i only got to try a taste of the sandwich, but i was amazed with the consistency of the bread and melted cheese throughout it. i mean, there aren't many ways to judge a grilled cheese other than being done right or wrong.
the portions were amazing for dishes that were both under $10. so if you're hungry and want a fresh taste of southern cuisine, this place is one you will want to visit.

zuchinni bisque and mashed colliflower. excellent bisque texture with small and larger chunks of.zuchinni; the perfect amount of salt to hold flavours of vegetable and cream together. mashed calliflower is just that, with pepper to taste and served warm.
key lime pie with homemade whipped cream.goodand tangy, not too tangy that it leaves a sandpapery, dry feel but still tangy and sweet. it's very balanced. creamy in color and crust holds together well. topped with homemade whipped cream. subtly sweet, soft & wet but not runny. whipped enough to hold a loose shape and delectible on the tongue.

cajun meatloaf slider
-spice hits immediately but isnt a peppery spice. a lingering spice that doesnt build quickly but stays even throughout. has a spicy sweet ketchup. meatloaf is hearty but not super filling as it is a slider. toped with american cheese and lettuce with pickle on top. i had a creamy mac & cheese.
superb service and this time i sat at the bar and bartender was engaging, laid back but very knowledgeble!

crazy busy but not crazy good. tried this place on a saturday night because it was conveniently close. obviously, it was packed, and parking was a beast. very little wait time though, as it is bigger inside than expected. the music was insanely loud and made it hard to carry on conversation. the clientele was very diverse, which i like because it makes for great people watching while waiting for the food. ordered pimiento dip with chips for appetizer. off brand chips, and the dip cooled way too quickly making for a un-scoopable clump in a bowl. ordered portobello pesto wrap for meal. i know pesto is oil based, but this wrap was swimming in it.goodflavor but all the oil made me a bit sick. i am glad to have experienced this restaurant, as i like to try new places, but i most likely will not go back.

we really wanted to love "dish" because of the other reviews on urbanspoon, but our experience was mostly mediocre. a good, solid offering was chicken & dumplings and key lime pie. everything else, not so much. that includes the pot roast (a little salty), the mashed sweet potatoes (bland), the collards side, the biscuits (dry and bland), and the collard dip. verygoodservice.

i won't be going back to dish. the restaurant was very busy which wasgoodfor their business, but our waitress had to serve this one whole section all by herself with no help. there were other staff members there, but no one was helping her take orders. i had the chicken & dumplings which was good, but i had a huge clump of dumpling that took up most of the bowl and it was raw on the inside due to the size of it. the greens were basically raw just blanched. they needed to be cooked a lot longer. the deviled eggs were ok, served too warm for me but they were fine. my partner had the special which was fried perch and said it wasn't seasoned at all, just fish fried. the biscuit was really good. the sweet potato pie was gross and over priced, don't bother. our waitress was amazing and she did an awesome job especially considering the circumstances.

nice place!. we had dinner here this past saturday night. saw it on the show diners, drive-ins and dives so figured we give it a try. really nice, comfortable restaurant with very attentive but not overbearing service. we started with the potato poppers and fried green tomatoes. they were bothgoodespecially the poppers. also, both dishes were fried but not greasy or overly salted. the entrees were the chicken with dumplings, salmon patties and the blackened tilapia sandwich. all three dishes were excellent especially the tilapia. my daughter loved the chicken with dumplings and my wife liked the salmon patties. can't wait to return!

great for breakfast!. 3.5 stars overall. i've been to dish for both dinner and breakfast, and i have to say i preferred their breakfast. the prices are very reasonable for how much food you get, and i enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. but service can be attentive or not, depending on who is waiting on you. and the food can be hit or miss, depending on what you like.

dinner gets 3 stars. the black eyed pea hummus was an interesting concept, but the hummus was too thick to be able to scoop it out of the bowl with just a pita wedge - a fork was definitely needed here! it was also very filling.

their chicken and dumplings (made famous from an episode of diners, drive-ins, and dives) could have used more dumplings and less chicken. (i know, i'm probably the only person who would think that.) the gravy was quite thick, and i am not a fan of dark meat, so i probably won't get it again. their mac 'n cheese was quite good, though, as were their biscuits and deviled eggs.

my hubby is a real fan of salmon patties, and he liked their version. he also enjoyed their collards and squash casserole.

their breakfast is a real bargain, and the food was a notch above dinner, so i would give them 4 stars here. i had the downhome breakfast served with eggs, hash brown casserole or grits, bacon, sausage, or soy sausage, biscuit, and tea or coffee. everything was really good, and the hash brown casserole was agoodchoice over the grits (it was yummy!). and all this was just $5!

my hubby had the carolina country breakfast, which had both grits and the hash brown casserole, and also had a bowl of pepper gravy for $6.50. the gravy was peppery, just the right consistency, and reallygoodon the biscuit and eggs.

we know we'll be back again soon for breakfast. even the coffee was strong enough to satisfy us. i only wish they would open earlier than 10am!

simply put, just reallygoodfood. neighborhood gem. the waiting staff is always extremely courteous. its hard not to notice such a diverse group of customers. there are just as many grandparents as there are hs and college kids. chicken & dumplings and the salmon patties leave me speechless every time. great place to go for down home food. they serve a deviled egg and biscuit with every meal, you cant go wrong!!!

friends recommended dish and we had seen it on ddd so we gave it a shot for a friday lunch. the first thing we liked is that unlike some ddd restaurants, there was no mention of the appearance on the show. they aren't trying to ride their 15 minutes, they're just doing their thing. i went for the meatloaf, which was just fine as was the accompanying mac&cheese. my wife had a 3 veggie plate with greens, squash casserole and mac&cheese. it was all good, verygoodeven, but not amazing. the chicken and dumplings is what had been recommended, maybe we should have listened. maybe next time, because it wasgoodenough to merit a return trip.

weird, loud, but vastly fun. i've been in charlotte since this place was the frighteningly wonderful ho toy (the only chinese place in town where there were more customers speaking chinese than english.) and dish strives for a similar odd authenticity.

the almost get it, too! actually the 'home cooking', soul/comfort food things are impressive. but i think that they frankly try to cover a bit too much ground: they could skip the fake southwestern/mexican items and not lose a lot of customers.

what does set this joint (and i use that term affectionately) apart are the small quirks: deviled eggs. decent biscuits, homemade pimento cheese (mine is a bit better but not enough to fight over. and it's a huge pain to make, so i'll let dish do it.)

expect to wait for a table, expect it to be very loud, but you can consistently get some reallygood(dare i say it?) nouvelle southern food.
