dish has a nice, down home feel with very solid southern food. my girlfriend and i shared the meatloaf sliders appetizer and the chicken and dumplings dish with a side of mashed sweet potatoes.
the meatloaf sliders were very good. the best part of the meal by far was the cajun spice on the meatloaf; if i come back to dish, i will probably order the meatloaf as my entree because it was excellent. the slider buns were a little dry and took away from the great meatloaf just slightly, but overall the sliders were still very good.
the chicken and dumplings were just okay in my opinion and my girlfriend's. a lot of people have raved about them being amazing, but they were definitely not life changing. the chicken was very tender and the dumplings were as well, but as a whole it wasn't extremely flavorful or memorable in any way. the mashed sweet potatoes on the side were amazing, however. nice and sweet but not too much so, and they had a little cinnamon taste that balanced it all perfectly. the biscuit was a little dry, and the deviled egg was pretty good.
overall, the food was good but not great with some things better than others. the service was solid as well, and the prices are pretty cheap, especially for the amount of food you get.

wonderful. i love this place. love everything about it. best bloody mary i've ever had. the waitress was fantastic. she made me and my partner feel very welcome, but she wasn't overwhelming. we started off with the black eyed pea hummus. it was outstanding. i would have been happy with just that and my epic bloody mary! i ordered the veggie sandwich and it was perfect. my man and i then split the key lime pie. holy crap is that good! i left feeling full, but not uncomfortable. i thought it was really well priced. it's also in such a cute part of charlotte. thanks for the great meal that ended a great day!

hmmm.... saw this place on the food network, and went to check it out. i had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, which came recommended by the waitress. the meatloaf itself was ok. it didnt blow me away, but it did it's job as a comfort food. the potatoes were a little dissapointing. they were kind of thin (not quite runny) and they threw some skins in there for texture. however, the meatloaf and potatoes were topped with an amazing gravy. i wish they would have brought a bowl of that stuff to dip every bite in. i also got green beans as a side, which were average. i paid about $11 for the plate and drink, which was a little more than i would normally pay for a weekday lunch. overall, i would give them a 6 out of 10. pretty good, but not great.

dish is a very eclectic place but when it comes to the food it's a nice balance of your down home comfort with a little twist of modern. our favorites are the classic meatloaf but spiced up a little, the chicken and dumplings are simple but amazing, and what's not to love about every meal coming with a deviled egg and a nice buttery biscuit?!

not sure how i feel after our first visit. pros and cons and it could be related to ordering off the breakfast menu. we stopped by for a quick lunch after working in the morning. i ordered huevos rancheros (why do i keep thinking i will find good western breakfasts out east?) and it was fine, but definitely not anything special. i ordered a side of biscuits and gravy and my heart sank when they came out with the typical boring pepper gravy on top. i always hope for some really good, unique, home made gravy and whenever i see that "looks like it came from a box" white stuff, im always sad. thumbs down on the biscuits and gravy. even if its not out of a box, it tastes like it is. meh. now the wife got the chicken pesto pita and it was pretty good. i came in planning to order the chicken and dumplings, maybe i should have stuck to the plan. we might go back and ill try to avoid my constant desire for a delicious brunch and order off the regular menu.

authentic southern food with a wonderful atmosphere. this is a wonderful place to eat lunch on a saturday afternoon. there is ample parking surrounding the area of plaza and midwood so that will not be an issue.
foodwise, everything was right on target. when i saw collard dip on the menu, i was extremely skeptical, but our friendly waitress told us that it was similar to spinach and artichoke dip so we delved on in. basically, i will go out of my way to say it is probably in my top five favorite appetizers of all time. you get your choice of pita bread or tortilla chips... go with the pita.
for my meal, i went with the black grilled chicken with grits and macaroni and cheese as a side. with all entrees, a deviled egg and biscuit are served as well. the mac and cheese and grits were typical of a good restaurant, except the prices were way more affordable. the deviled eggs tasted amazing with hints of paprika and mustard in the hard boiled egg. the chicken was the highlight by far though. it was topped with a black-eyed pea and corn salsa and really well marinated to where it remained flavorful and moist. the biscuit was also a great surprise with a sweet sugar-like topping on it.
my fiancee went with the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with deviled eggs. i only got to try a taste of the sandwich, but i was amazed with the consistency of the bread and melted cheese throughout it. i mean, there aren't many ways to judge a grilled cheese other than being done right or wrong.
the portions were amazing for dishes that were both under $10. so if you're hungry and want a fresh taste of southern cuisine, this place is one you will want to visit.

zuchinni bisque and mashed colliflower. excellent bisque texture with small and larger chunks of.zuchinni; the perfect amount of salt to hold flavours of vegetable and cream together. mashed calliflower is just that, with pepper to taste and served warm.
key lime pie with homemade whipped cream. good and tangy, not too tangy that it leaves a sandpapery, dry feel but still tangy and sweet. it's very balanced. creamy in color and crust holds together well. topped with homemade whipped cream. subtly sweet, soft & wet but not runny. whipped enough to hold a loose shape and delectible on the tongue.

cajun meatloaf slider
-spice hits immediately but isnt a peppery spice. a lingering spice that doesnt build quickly but stays even throughout. has a spicy sweet ketchup. meatloaf is hearty but not super filling as it is a slider. toped with american cheese and lettuce with pickle on top. i had a creamy mac & cheese.
superb service and this time i sat at the bar and bartender was engaging, laid back but very knowledgeble!

crazy busy but not crazy good. tried this place on a saturday night because it was conveniently close. obviously, it was packed, and parking was a beast. very little wait time though, as it is bigger inside than expected. the music was insanely loud and made it hard to carry on conversation. the clientele was very diverse, which i like because it makes for great people watching while waiting for the food. ordered pimiento dip with chips for appetizer. off brand chips, and the dip cooled way too quickly making for a un-scoopable clump in a bowl. ordered portobello pesto wrap for meal. i know pesto is oil based, but this wrap was swimming in it. good flavor but all the oil made me a bit sick. i am glad to have experienced this restaurant, as i like to try new places, but i most likely will not go back.

dish is a charlotte institution. perched at its post in plaza midwood since 2002 dish serves up warm, southern comfort food at prices that won’t hurt your wallet. i first tasted dish’s delicious homestyle cooking almost three years ago when i spent the summer in charlotte for an internship. dish was one of my supervising attorney’s favorite spots (along with the diamond) and we went to dish several times over the summer for lunch (peter loves dish so much that i gave him a dish gift card as a parting gift after spending a summer with him). he always order the chicken and dumplings, and i rotated through several of their sandwich offerings. my favorite part about anything you order–the deviled egg you get on the side. if that doesn’t remind you of family style cooking, then what does?
