dish has a nice, down home feel with very solid southern food. my girlfriend and i shared the meatloaf sliders appetizer and the chicken and dumplings dish with a side of mashed sweet potatoes.
the meatloaf sliders were very good. the best part of the meal by far was the cajun spice on the meatloaf; if i come back to dish, i will probably order the meatloaf as my entree because it was excellent. the slider buns were a little dry and took away from the great meatloaf just slightly, but overall the sliders were still very good.
the chicken and dumplings were just okay in my opinion and my girlfriend's. a lot of people have raved about them being amazing, but they were definitely not life changing. the chicken was very tender and the dumplings were as well, but as a whole it wasn't extremely flavorful or memorable in any way. the mashed sweet potatoes on the side were amazing, however. nice and sweet but not too much so, and they had a little cinnamon taste that balanced it all perfectly. the biscuit was a little dry, and thedeviledegg was pretty good.
overall, the food was good but not great with some things better than others. the service was solid as well, and the prices are pretty cheap, especially for the amount of food you get.

dish is a very eclectic place but when it comes to the food it's a nice balance of your down home comfort with a little twist of modern. our favorites are the classic meatloaf but spiced up a little, the chicken and dumplings are simple but amazing, and what's not to love about every meal coming with adeviledegg and a nice buttery biscuit?!

authentic southern food with a wonderful atmosphere. this is a wonderful place to eat lunch on a saturday afternoon. there is ample parking surrounding the area of plaza and midwood so that will not be an issue.
foodwise, everything was right on target. when i saw collard dip on the menu, i was extremely skeptical, but our friendly waitress told us that it was similar to spinach and artichoke dip so we delved on in. basically, i will go out of my way to say it is probably in my top five favorite appetizers of all time. you get your choice of pita bread or tortilla chips... go with the pita.
for my meal, i went with the black grilled chicken with grits and macaroni and cheese as a side. with all entrees, adeviledegg and biscuit are served as well. the mac and cheese and grits were typical of a good restaurant, except the prices were way more affordable. thedeviledeggs tasted amazing with hints of paprika and mustard in the hard boiled egg. the chicken was the highlight by far though. it was topped with a black-eyed pea and corn salsa and really well marinated to where it remained flavorful and moist. the biscuit was also a great surprise with a sweet sugar-like topping on it.
my fiancee went with the grilled pimento cheese sandwich withdeviledeggs. i only got to try a taste of the sandwich, but i was amazed with the consistency of the bread and melted cheese throughout it. i mean, there aren't many ways to judge a grilled cheese other than being done right or wrong.
the portions were amazing for dishes that were both under $10. so if you're hungry and want a fresh taste of southern cuisine, this place is one you will want to visit.

dish is a charlotte institution. perched at its post in plaza midwood since 2002 dish serves up warm, southern comfort food at prices that won’t hurt your wallet. i first tasted dish’s delicious homestyle cooking almost three years ago when i spent the summer in charlotte for an internship. dish was one of my supervising attorney’s favorite spots (along with the diamond) and we went to dish several times over the summer for lunch (peter loves dish so much that i gave him a dish gift card as a parting gift after spending a summer with him). he always order the chicken and dumplings, and i rotated through several of their sandwich offerings. my favorite part about anything you order–thedeviledegg you get on the side. if that doesn’t remind you of family style cooking, then what does?

i won't be going back to dish. the restaurant was very busy which was good for their business, but our waitress had to serve this one whole section all by herself with no help. there were other staff members there, but no one was helping her take orders. i had the chicken & dumplings which was good, but i had a huge clump of dumpling that took up most of the bowl and it was raw on the inside due to the size of it. the greens were basically raw just blanched. they needed to be cooked a lot longer. thedeviledeggs were ok, served too warm for me but they were fine. my partner had the special which was fried perch and said it wasn't seasoned at all, just fish fried. the biscuit was really good. the sweet potato pie was gross and over priced, don't bother. our waitress was amazing and she did an awesome job especially considering the circumstances.

great for breakfast!. 3.5 stars overall. i've been to dish for both dinner and breakfast, and i have to say i preferred their breakfast. the prices are very reasonable for how much food you get, and i enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. but service can be attentive or not, depending on who is waiting on you. and the food can be hit or miss, depending on what you like.

dinner gets 3 stars. the black eyed pea hummus was an interesting concept, but the hummus was too thick to be able to scoop it out of the bowl with just a pita wedge - a fork was definitely needed here! it was also very filling.

their chicken and dumplings (made famous from an episode of diners, drive-ins, and dives) could have used more dumplings and less chicken. (i know, i'm probably the only person who would think that.) the gravy was quite thick, and i am not a fan of dark meat, so i probably won't get it again. their mac 'n cheese was quite good, though, as were their biscuits anddeviledeggs.

my hubby is a real fan of salmon patties, and he liked their version. he also enjoyed their collards and squash casserole.

their breakfast is a real bargain, and the food was a notch above dinner, so i would give them 4 stars here. i had the downhome breakfast served with eggs, hash brown casserole or grits, bacon, sausage, or soy sausage, biscuit, and tea or coffee. everything was really good, and the hash brown casserole was a good choice over the grits (it was yummy!). and all this was just $5!

my hubby had the carolina country breakfast, which had both grits and the hash brown casserole, and also had a bowl of pepper gravy for $6.50. the gravy was peppery, just the right consistency, and really good on the biscuit and eggs.

we know we'll be back again soon for breakfast. even the coffee was strong enough to satisfy us. i only wish they would open earlier than 10am!

simply put, just really good food. neighborhood gem. the waiting staff is always extremely courteous. its hard not to notice such a diverse group of customers. there are just as many grandparents as there are hs and college kids. chicken & dumplings and the salmon patties leave me speechless every time. great place to go for down home food. they serve adeviledegg and biscuit with every meal, you cant go wrong!!!

dish is a funky spot in plaza midwood that turns out great food including wonderful vegetables. recently my mom and i had lunch here and truly enjoyed going meatless with the wide selection on the veggie menu. i particularly enjoyed the tomato soup and the green beans and thedeviledegg and biscuit really added an extra touch. dish also has plenty of options for carnivores including burgers (veggie available), sandwiches such as fish, grilled eggplant and grilled pimento cheese, entrees like meatloaf, shrimp & grits and chicken & dumplings, a variety of salads and "south of the border" items like nachos, burritos and quesadillas. desserts are also offered including a wonderful sounding vanilla bourbon sweet potato pie - yum! i look forward to returning to dish again soon. in addition to lunch and dinner service, breakfast is also served on saturday from 10-3.

comfort food at it's best. dish comes thru every time! my husband loves the chicken and dumplings and i loves the chicken fried steak! there is something for everyone to a veggie plate, fish of the day, to the traditional items on the menu as meatloaf and mac and cheese. i love the fact that every dish comes with adeviledegg! welcome to the south! i would recommend everyone needs to try dish at least once. it won't disappoint!

this cozy little scene is located in the up in coming foodie hood plaza midwood of charlotte. featured on diners, drive-ins and dives as serving authentic southern fare, this born and bred southern gal and to try it out for herself! i chose the recommended and most popular dish at dish-the chicken n dumplins and let's not forget the apple cidar vinegar to pour on top! every entree is served with a scratch made biscuit and adeviledegg and whats more southern than that?? southern hospitality at it's best!

weird, loud, but vastly fun. i've been in charlotte since this place was the frighteningly wonderful ho toy (the only chinese place in town where there were more customers speaking chinese than english.) and dish strives for a similar odd authenticity.

the almost get it, too! actually the 'home cooking', soul/comfort food things are impressive. but i think that they frankly try to cover a bit too much ground: they could skip the fake southwestern/mexican items and not lose a lot of customers.

what does set this joint (and i use that term affectionately) apart are the small quirks:deviledeggs. decent biscuits, homemade pimento cheese (mine is a bit better but not enough to fight over. and it's a huge pain to make, so i'll let dish do it.)

expect to wait for a table, expect it to be very loud, but you can consistently get some really good (dare i say it?) nouvelle southern food.

what is all the hype about??? this is the only review you need to read!!!. i went to dish with a couple lady friends a while back on a friday night. the place was packed! it seemed like they didn't have a large wait staff for the amount of tables in the restaurant. it took forever just to get a waiter over to our table to see us. i started to check to see it i had put on deoderant, but everything checked out a-okay on my end after a quick once over.

i ordered the pot roast with mac & cheese and green beans. it took 45 to an hour for the food to come out. the locals were getting restless if you know what i mean. we were ready to naw on any arm or leg that made its way past our table.

the pot roast was okay, not great, but not bad. the flavor was good, the meat was somewhat tender, but not as tender as you would expect from a pot roast when the meat is slow cooked. i feel i could make a decent pot roast that could give dish a run for their money. the mac n' cheese did not have that thick cheesy texture you are used too from southern mac n' cheese. they use the smaller noodles like you see in the mac n cheese box. the cheese itself was there, but didn't make an impact with the taste buds. you guys had to get this mac n cheese out of the box. the green bean anddeviledegg that came with the meal were probably the best part.

the only southern comfort i got out of this meal was when i drank a couple glasses of southern comfort afterwards and resolved with a nice long break to the toilet with a creative loafing magazine. why isn't their an obituary section in cl? it should be located somewhere between the stories on idiot crooks and spicy personals!

...anyways...by the way... dish puts very little alcohol in their mixed drinks...what is with that! the girls i was with were complaining that they weren't getting drunk fast enough and the drinks cost a fortune. where's the alcohol... these broads need to get toasted?

i don't see what all the hype is about this place in plaza midwood and neither did the two fine woman i was with.

bland, bland, and more bland. we are new in town and decided to check out plaza midwood for the evening. we ended up walking around and found dish. we started off with fried green tomatoes which were great. from there, everything went down hill. i had the shrimp and grits and my wife had the pot roast. the only thing worth eating was the pot roast. the shrimp and grits, deviledegg, potatoes, and macaroni and cheese had no flavor whatsoever. disappointing comfort food.

loved it. my friend came to visit in the charlotte area. we were hoping to eat at penguin, but when we saw that they weren't open we went next door to dish. i wasn't disappointed in the least. the food was delicious. i ordered the cajun meatloaf, which i highly recommend. the plate came with all sorts of food: meatloaf, mashed potatoes, adeviledegg, a biscuit, and a side. i highly recommend this restaurant.

very disappointed. i came here for a take-out order of salmon cakes, macaroni and cheese, greens withdeviledegg and an extra side of slaw. on a positive note, the order was ready very quickly and the staff was nice. now back to the food facts. the salmon cakes were very bready and the salmon so overcooked it was brown and very greasy. the greens had absolutely no flavor, not even salt or pepper, the mac and cheese had no s&p either and were doled out in a very underwhelming size portion. worse than that, they were bland and mediocre. the coleslaw was at best, ok. kfc or bojangles is better (but my taste vary and i like all kinds including earthfares). thedeviledeggs were awful.deviledeggs, are a southern tradition and i have never had one that did not include at least one of the two following ingredients: paprika or relish. they had no flavor, no sweet, no salt, no nuttin.
i know this place is famous around charlotte and i hate to put them down. maybe another meal, someday. their prices are very reasonable and the staff very friendly. the menu offers lots to chose from so i am sure there is something there i would like better,
