mixed review. i stopped in over the weekend for my birthday dinner. it was pretty quiet and not many people in the restaurant. cute setup. ordered fried catfish, catfish etouffee, and green bean casserole. the fried catfish was right, nawlins style and southern, just how i make it (i'm from florida). it is pretty hard to mess up fried catfish though. the green bean casserole and the catfish etouffee or another story. for some reason this cafe doesn't like to use cream. if you would have added just a bit of cream to the green bean casserole and the catfish etouffee, it would have been world's better. the mushroom soup was too lumpy in the green bean casserole, and should have more of a thinner consistency. the catfish etouffee was loaded with spice, and didn't have that sweet taste from the benefit of adding cream. i am having a really hard time finding a place in portland that doessouthernfood correct, and this might be as close as i can get.

a very casual bar like atmosphere with plastic booths. the service wasn't necessarily bad but it was definitely not attentive. several times we had to flag down our server. the food was just eh. the tofu in the tofu creole was inedible (fried so hard it was hard to bite) although the creole sauce was really good. the corn fritters are just bland hush puppies with a few pieces of corn in them. the mac n cheese was pretty average as well as the hoppin john. if you want foodsoutherncreole (well as good as you can get in the pnw

neighborlysoutherncomfort. my husband, family & different friends have dined here many times.. while it's a noisy environment, the food & bar are worth the visit!
their crayfish etouffee, jambalaya & the sides they offer are some of our favorites!

poor southern. this was a disappointing visit for four us that wanted to try some goodsoutherncooking. the fried okra was not battered well and was tough. the hush puppies were large and over cooked. my blackened catfish was also overcooked. i would not recommend this for a goodsouthernmeal. prices were reasonable.

first timer. lets just skip past the delicious drinks we ordered (the alamo and melissy's sidecar). we started out with pups on a pond (hushpuppies on chicken gravy). we got worried that we wouldnt be able to order dinner since this was a huge portion. no worries, we did it! delicious chicken gravy, kinda smokey and the hushpuppies were crisp on outside and tender inside great spice! my wife ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese as the sides. i ordered the fried catfish with biscuits and tater tot casserole as my sides. i had to eat the fish, it wouldnt reheat and we eyed dessert on the way in. the fish was supper tender with a great remoulade. very good complement. even my wife enjoyed the fish...which she does not eat very often. both our meals were delicious, we took remainder home so we could enjoy peach pie and milky way cake. ohh man im so glad i used this day as a cheat. i was overwhelmed with all the flavors and how well everything complimented each other. if this issoutherncooking i will be eating it often! perhaps if my mom were fromsouthernfinland i might have enjoyed the same? lol thank goodness for good olsouthernsoul food! next time i order the greens! maybe next time i will wait to take a picture before diving in...maybe.

uninspired, unimpressed. dont biscuits made with bits of bacon and cheese inside, covered in jalapeno country gravy sound gluttonously delicious? throw in a couple of scrambled eggs and some pepper bacon and after placing our order i was off to fantasy land, creating images of what was yet to come on the big screen in my mind. ye olde wife was probably pondering the same, only with a different lineup. accompanied by these thoughts and our red beers, time passed with ease. then the food arrived.
nicole had asked for scrambled eggs instead of poached with her eggs sardou, but the cook fumbled the message, so hers had to go back. as for mine, i was completely underwhelmed by what was in front of me. when i think of a down home, southernmeal, i recall the portions being a bit on the absurd side. what lay in front of me was the anti thesis of that: my little pile of eggs, the strips of bacon laying picturesquely beneath them, and a neat little pile of gravy that didnt even cover the entire lid of my biscuits. at this point im thinking "well, this better be some of the best god damn country gravy ive ever had in my life." sadly, it was not. one of the reasons i ordered this dish (it was their special, $9.95) is because jalapenos or green chile are awesome in gravy. the spiciness they provide brings it to another level. unfortunately for me there was zero happening in the heat index department. if there were jalapenos in this gravy there was certainly no evidence of it. the eggs were bland and forgettable. the pepper bacon was the only winner of the group, though that hardly made up for everything else.
my wifes re-do showed up rather quickly and looked pretty good. she though the hollandaise sauce was nice, but nothing exceptional. the only highlight from her side of the table were the grits, which had cheese in them and were very good. that being said, she was expecting much more from a dish priced at $11.50.
our server was the only other decent thing worth mentioning, he was very good about getting nicole's plate fixed and even took our 2 red beers off the final tab as way of an apology. so at least there was that, but not much else.
grade: c- (if you know whats possible with these 2 dishes, then you can understand how epically delta cafe has failed with them, especially for the money)
