this is an excellentplaceto burn a few hours.  of course there is always a good selection of fresh beers to try.  the food is pub food with a little fanciness.  i had a burger and it was great.  our server was attentive and personable.  very relaxed atmosphere.  i really like this place.

tasty food, sub par service. despite what all the reviews had said about poor food, my husband and i decided to try thisplaceout with some friends. the food was tasty, but service was not great. i recommend sitting on the outside patio deck. french onion soup and sweet potato fries delighted my taste buds.

thisplaceis well past its prime having, at one time, been a worthy spot to go.

the location (in an old church) and their own brewed beer is what makes it special. unfortunately that is where it stops.

the food is boring and old...not to mention that our party all ended up feeling sick after eating there. we all had the pittsburgh salad - some of us with chicken and others with salmon. in all cases the salad had too few fries, was unimaginative, and bland.

would not recommend thisplacefor more than a beer.

awesome beer in a unique atmosphere. despite the disaster that was my break up with my ex last summer, i still keep coming back to theplacewe first met in person- cbw! i ridiculously love their thunderhop ipa and it is always my go-to beer if none of the seasonal varieties peak my interest. i'm not a fan of the celestial gold but my (new-er) bf, who is not much of a beer drinker and prefers wine or mixed drinks, enjoyed it and said it's "perfect for non-beer drinkers". since i last reviewed any of the menu options, i have sampled a lot, hence the need for an update!
as far as apps go, the spinach, feta, and smoked gouda dip is great for sharing and has that oozy, cheesy "comfort" taste to it. this is always a winner in my book, particularly because gouda and feta are my two favorite types of cheeses. the chips are, well, just chips. maybe warmed pita bread would be a tastier substitution to the chips in the future. the bruschetta is also a solid appetizer to share. the ratio of toppings to bread (which usually annoys me when ordering bruschetta because i constantly feel like i'm left with either a lot of topping and no crostinis or the exact opposite) is perfect!
in addition to the wild boar bbq pizza (which will always be my favorite pie at cbw), i've also had the pleasure of enjoying the artichoke, spinach, and feta pizza and the chicken and sundried tomato pizza. both were very flavorful and served pipping hot right out of the oven. the ingredients were very fresh and evenly distributed throughout the pie. the sundried tomato pizza i enjoyed actually was "on the house" because the bartender (such a quirky guy but well-meaning) clearly forgot to ring in the order (the big clue was when it had been 25 minutes and he asked what we had ordered again). being the pizzas here are a bit on the pricey end, i greatly appreciated this generosity particularly considering the inconvenience as well.
i've also had the opportunity to sample some of their sandwiches, and i was pretty impressed with those as well! i've tried the buffalo burger, the chicken and brie sandwich, and the pulled pork sandwich. the buffalo burger, cooked to a perfect mr, was so flavorful in it's natural juices that i did not use any condiments or have any add ons (like bacon or sauteed mushrooms or onions-perhaps next time since all of a sudden that sounds amazingly delicious!) with the chicken and brie sandwich, i loved how the brie complimented the granny smith apple slices on the sandwich! it was cheesy yet not overly so-very delicious! the pulled pork sandwich was very tasty too-particularly the bbq sauce which i believe to be the same used on the wild boar bbq pizza!
and just a general statement on the atmosphere-pretty freakin' awesome! how many people can say they have drank beer in a decommissioned catholic church?! for that fact alone, you should take my word and check out cbw for yourself!

was visiting this past weekend for a concert and decided to try thisplaceout, as recommended by a coworker. the beer was tasty and unique (i'm a craft beer lover) and my friend and it split two appetizers, the spinach gouda dip and the traditional perogies. the dip was delicious, and i only wish it would have come on a larger bowl! the perogies were somewhat bland, but still tasty. overall, i love the atmosphere of thisplaceas well as the unique beer and tasty food. if i'm ever in the area again, i'll be back!

still mediocre. stopped for a quick dinner today. bartender is quirky and condescending as usual. ordered 4 cheese pizza which was soooooo salty it was almost inedible. won't eat the pizza again there. had the chips and hot smoked gouda dip which was very good . beer was ok, but nothing to write home about as always. theplacehas a distinctive smell to it, mix of sulphur and old beer. i keep trying to give thisplacea fair shake but i just can't keep going back .

stunning service. a meet up group of about 15 initially that expanded to 18-19 over an hour period ate at cbw about 2 weeks ago. the food was fine. this posting is about the service.

excellent. the waitress, clearly experienced and helpful, did separate checks (not normally done), and managed the group's initial seating of about 15 to expanded to 18-19 over the next hour. this was a juggling act for her and she did it graciously -- theplacewas packed and very busy so for this to be so adeptly managed is testimony to a customer service focus. drink and food orders were managed without a hitch.

the beer sampler was fun -- highly recommend it.

cbw -- a great pittsburgh venue.

funplacefor visiting friends/family. fun atmosphere and good food. last time we were there it was the oktoberfest (food) menu.
this is theplacewe bring our out of town friends when they visit. actually we were just at a family gathering recently and my brother in law was asking about this place. they want to go back next time they go to a steelers game. it's unique and memorable in it's own way. keep it on your sightseeing radar.

if you think that dining in a church cannot be done, it can. if you think that beer and a house of worship don't go together, they do. where on earth does such aplaceexist? none other than the church brew works.  now obviously many people have dined inside a currently functioning church (i.e. a church supper), but the same can't be said about churches no longer active but whose unique features remain. i've only eaten at the church brew works once before and while it's aplacei wouldn't mind dining at multiple times in the course of a year, it's much more suited for visitors due to its wow factor upon first entering off of busy liberty avenue. the building dates from the early 20th century when it operated as st. john's the baptist catholic church. the website notes that "the multi-colored glass of the rose window stands as a kaleidoscopic backdrop for the turn-of-the-century pipe organ located in the church's balcony" and "the hand-painted cypress beams on the high vaulted ceiling a

untraditionalplace& pierogies. love the why the cbw is set up, very unique space. it can be a little noisy. some untraditional items the menu. had the untraditional pierogies which had alligator and plantain and a spicy sauce. nice and tasty homemade pierogies. some interesting beers. some were liked and some not so much, but that is why you go, to try different beers. the air had the smell of beer being brewed.

service was good. we chose to linger and were not rushed.
