friday for lunch chris took me to one of pittsburgh's breweries, the church brew works! it is an old church that is now a brewery. on the inside… i got one of the special draft beers, a herbal wheat beer. it was really tasty! it had a very citrusy flavor, i really liked it. chris and i also split the one of the specials: the broccoli and pesto pierogies! getting pierogies in pittsburgh is a must. for lunch i got the vegetarian polenta with roasted tomatoes and mushrooms in a goat cheese sauce. it was delicious! i've only had polenta a handful of times, but i really like it so i should eat more of it! another fantastic lunch in pittsburgh! i swear thefoodat the restaurants in pittsburgh is always so good. after our lunch it was time to head to the marathon race expo. it was as huge as ever! i think pittsburgh has the biggest race expo i've been to yet. the shirts are pretty sweet, too! well, today has been pretty relaxing so far. we took a trip to trader joe's and now we're getting

go for the beer, not the food. church brew works has two strengths. the first is being one of the more interesting restaurant settings in pittsburgh being housed in a former church. the space is wide open and there is a patio for outside eating when nice to make this a unique setting for a meal; it is similar to a beer hall in some ways. seeing all the original stained glass is neat and the wide open setting is a bit loud but not overbearing. the second strength is the beer. one of the better local microbrews in the city you will enjoy at least one recipe. it’s a pretty standard fair in terms of the types of beer they offer but they are good.

thefoodthough is another matter. it’s okay, but that’s it. you can find most of what they offer at other restaurants and nothing particularly stands out as special. i can’t think of any dish that makes me want to eat there in terms of originality or flavor. on top of that all thefoodneeds a price reduction to be more in line with the quality. service varies; i’ve had good and bad at both peak and non-peak hours so it’s hard to judge that as a whole.

if you go here, go to drink with some friends. if your insistent on eating, i suggest sticking to the more limited bar menu over the standard entrée menu to limit how much you overpay for exotic sounding but average food.

tasty food, sub par service. despite what all the reviews had said about poor food, my husband and i decided to try this place out with some friends. thefoodwas tasty, but service was not great. i recommend sitting on the outside patio deck. french onion soup and sweet potato fries delighted my taste buds.

this place is well past its prime having, at one time, been a worthy spot to go.

the location (in an old church) and their own brewed beer is what makes it special. unfortunately that is where it stops.

thefoodis boring and old...not to mention that our party all ended up feeling sick after eating there. we all had the pittsburgh salad - some of us with chicken and others with salmon. in all cases the salad had too few fries, was unimaginative, and bland.

would not recommend this place for more than a beer.

you're paying for the environment and novelty of being in a church. thefoodwas decent, but i'd of expected more for the money spent.

staff were friendly and answered questions about the location.

i want to rate thefoodexcellent and the service terrible, but i'll round up, since the atmosphere is cool.

thefoodwas wonderful. everything we got (especially the pierogi of the day, which was avocado, potato, cheese, and chives, i think) was great! the guys enjoyed the beer they drank (i don't drink beer), though they were out of a lot of the beers they tried to order. my hawaiian mimosa was yummy, but getting my second one took a lot of work. my friend actually went to track her down after it hadn't come in ages and we hadn't seen her. it's a neat restaurant and i'd go back, but apparently their pizza is really great and though it's still on their website, they do not have pizza at this time. their oven burned. not sure if they're going to have pizza in the future or not.

also, many of our menus had extra pieces of menus forfoodthat was no longer available that day and we only got 2 of the menus with the sandwiches on them for our entire party (6). another area where the service lacked in addition to the poor waitress.

church brew works, sitting inside this massive old chapel in pittsburgh’s lawrenceville neighborhood, this one servesfoodand local beer into the late hours with its fearless motto: “and on the eighth day … man created beer.”

used to be good/not anymore. i was there on tuesday and was very unhappy with the quality of the food. one of our party had the salmon dish . the salmon was good but it was served with some kind of greens that were an overcooked, slimey ,greasey mess. that ruined the taste of the salmon. i ordered a dish that i thought would be stew like dish made with wild boar. it turned out to be canned pinto beans with some kind of tomato sauce and a little bit of shreaded meat. who knows what kind of meat and the dish looked like dogfoodright out of the can without any flavor.i could have prepared this dish at home for less than two dollars.
when we first entered we were given a menu and there wasn't much of a selaction to choose from. we ordered from this menu and a little while later we started to see the other patrons being served items that we didn't have on our menu. if you are going to have two menus, you need to give the patrons both of them.
on a positive note, our waiter gave us good service.
i have dined here many times in the past, but your current dinner menu is terrible.

fire the chef, keep the brew master!. had a pretty horrible eating experience at cbw. we had 2 appetizers and 2 main dishes and 2 of them were mediocre, the 2 main courses were outright inedible. overcooked, tasted stale, no flavor etc. good they have some decent beers but overall the quality offoodwas not justifying the pretty steep price.
advice to management: get one of these restaurant 'turnaround' chefs in, fire your chef, create a small but high quality menu and ensure highest quality offoodall the time. this might save you from the inevitable demise.

stunning service. a meet up group of about 15 initially that expanded to 18-19 over an hour period ate at cbw about 2 weeks ago. thefoodwas fine. this posting is about the service.

excellent. the waitress, clearly experienced and helpful, did separate checks (not normally done), and managed the group's initial seating of about 15 to expanded to 18-19 over the next hour. this was a juggling act for her and she did it graciously -- the place was packed and very busy so for this to be so adeptly managed is testimony to a customer service focus. drink andfoodorders were managed without a hitch.

the beer sampler was fun -- highly recommend it.

cbw -- a great pittsburgh venue.
