i want to rate the food excellent and the service terrible, but i'll round up, since the atmosphere is cool.

the food was wonderful. everything we got (especially the pierogi of the day, which was avocado, potato, cheese, and chives, i think) was great! the guys enjoyed the beer they drank (i don't drink beer), though they were out of a lot of the beers they tried to order. my hawaiian mimosa was yummy, but getting my second one took a lot of work. my friend actually went to track her down after it hadn't come in ages and we hadn't seen her. it's a neat restaurant and i'd go back, but apparently theirpizzais really great and though it's still on their website, they do not havepizzaat this time. their oven burned. not sure if they're going to havepizzain the future or not.

also, many of our menus had extra pieces of menus for food that was no longer available that day and we only got 2 of the menus with the sandwiches on them for our entire party (6). another area where the service lacked in addition to the poor waitress.

what a wacky place! i always loved coming here and still do... i always make a point of bragging about it and bringing my friends here, and when we're finished, they understand why! i never really had a taste for ipa's until i went and tried a fresh pint of renegade black ipa... my favorite and my gateway into the wide world of the horridly hoppy! the pierogiepizzais a must try especially with bacon unless you really hate feeling a hair overstuffed... only complaint was the lack of tvs at the bar; had to contort a bit to get a view of the baseball game given our seats... otherwise, never fails to send me home ecstatic!

awesome beer in a unique atmosphere. despite the disaster that was my break up with my ex last summer, i still keep coming back to the place we first met in person- cbw! i ridiculously love their thunderhop ipa and it is always my go-to beer if none of the seasonal varieties peak my interest. i'm not a fan of the celestial gold but my (new-er) bf, who is not much of a beer drinker and prefers wine or mixed drinks, enjoyed it and said it's "perfect for non-beer drinkers". since i last reviewed any of the menu options, i have sampled a lot, hence the need for an update!
as far as apps go, the spinach, feta, and smoked gouda dip is great for sharing and has that oozy, cheesy "comfort" taste to it. this is always a winner in my book, particularly because gouda and feta are my two favorite types of cheeses. the chips are, well, just chips. maybe warmed pita bread would be a tastier substitution to the chips in the future. the bruschetta is also a solid appetizer to share. the ratio of toppings to bread (which usually annoys me when ordering bruschetta because i constantly feel like i'm left with either a lot of topping and no crostinis or the exact opposite) is perfect!
in addition to the wild boar bbqpizza(which will always be my favorite pie at cbw), i've also had the pleasure of enjoying the artichoke, spinach, and fetapizzaand the chicken and sundried tomato pizza. both were very flavorful and served pipping hot right out of the oven. the ingredients were very fresh and evenly distributed throughout the pie. the sundried tomatopizzai enjoyed actually was "on the house" because the bartender (such a quirky guy but well-meaning) clearly forgot to ring in the order (the big clue was when it had been 25 minutes and he asked what we had ordered again). being the pizzas here are a bit on the pricey end, i greatly appreciated this generosity particularly considering the inconvenience as well.
i've also had the opportunity to sample some of their sandwiches, and i was pretty impressed with those as well! i've tried the buffalo burger, the chicken and brie sandwich, and the pulled pork sandwich. the buffalo burger, cooked to a perfect mr, was so flavorful in it's natural juices that i did not use any condiments or have any add ons (like bacon or sauteed mushrooms or onions-perhaps next time since all of a sudden that sounds amazingly delicious!) with the chicken and brie sandwich, i loved how the brie complimented the granny smith apple slices on the sandwich! it was cheesy yet not overly so-very delicious! the pulled pork sandwich was very tasty too-particularly the bbq sauce which i believe to be the same used on the wild boar bbq pizza!
and just a general statement on the atmosphere-pretty freakin' awesome! how many people can say they have drank beer in a decommissioned catholic church?! for that fact alone, you should take my word and check out cbw for yourself!

still mediocre. stopped for a quick dinner today. bartender is quirky and condescending as usual. ordered 4 cheesepizzawhich was soooooo salty it was almost inedible. won't eat thepizzaagain there. had the chips and hot smoked gouda dip which was very good . beer was ok, but nothing to write home about as always. the place has a distinctive smell to it, mix of sulphur and old beer. i keep trying to give this place a fair shake but i just can't keep going back .

obviously, a unique atmosphere, and of course they have excellent beer. irish stout topped my list. salad and plate were at the perfect temp, totally fresh ingredients. the spinach / artichokepizzais awesome. not soggy at all from the ingredients. dough was tasty, crisp, and proportional in all the right places.

never to return because of the service. i have been to the church many times. the ambiance is amazing. still, after my last visit i will never return. the same bartender has been there for ages and his smug attitude about getting you a beer is a little much. the beers are only pretty good and oddly they all have the same after taste. i am not sure what is up with that. my beer snob friends are not high on this place in terms of the quality of the microbrew. i agree. the food is overpriced. i will say thepizzais excellent just stay away from the bar. also, when i ask to see a manager it would be nice of this person was out of high school.

rip-off. they usually have really good pizza, that's why i went there. however their oven is down for a long time but yet they will advertise thepizzaon their website. that's what made me mad. put a message on your website saying that the oven is down or at the very least don't advertise brick ovenpizzaif you don't got a brick oven!!!!

aligator perogies!. let's start with the idea of a restaurant (micro brewery) in a catholic church, you walk in thinking you'll see the organ pipes....oh no no, its the brewery! we sat outside, the special aligator perogies, were fantastic. i ordered the pork tacos, and could not ask for anything more tender. service was good, a nice explanation of the beers available, pizzaoven was inop, but plenty of other choice. there is no parking available except for on the street, so the weekends are very busy, we were here on thursday evening, and was a good steady stream of diners.

cool building, bad everything else. wandered over to church brew the other day for the first time, since we happened to be in the neighborhood. the restaurant/brewery is located in a beautiful old church, which was a nice, if slightly eerie setting for lunch.

the problem was everything else at church brew. to their credit, a few people in our party seemed to enjoy their sandwiches. but thepizza(served after those with sandwiches were finished eating) was pretty terrible. starchy, heavy, oily, and just... not good.

i really don't know what to say about their beer. i enjoy good craft/micros such as dogfish head, stone brewery, sierra nevada, etc, and was excited to try theirs (dunkel & stout). bad idea. how this over-carbonated, thinner-than-water stuff can be called beer i'm not sure. good for them for trying, honestly. but let's not sugar-coat it; these were some of the worst beers i've tried.

the service was below adequate, and we were left waiting on most occasions for simple things -- water, check, etc. it took so long to bring the check after asking that i was starting to consider leaving cash and walking out. wish i had; the bill was more than expected.

as for the brew-on-altar setup they have at the front of the church: i don't necessarily find it offensive that they have beer on the altar -- just that they have their beer on the altar.

whenever i come to pittsburgh the first place i think about eating is church brew works. there is something fantastic about sitting in a beautiful church drinking wonderfully flavorful brews accompanied by some if the bestpizzaon the east coast. today i dared to try the pittsburgh perogy pizza. as i expected i was not disappointed. a brave pie lined with mash potatoes, layered with carmelized onions and topped with cheddar cheese. in a word 'fantastic'. thank you brew works for making drinking in church fun.

as a restaurant, it ranks among the bottom of many a horrible restaurants in pittsburgh. thepizzais gross - bland taste, filled with processed cheese-like material, and very thick starchy crust. the beer however is great and the church building is certainly a great novelty. why not just turn this dive into a 100% pub and night cap joint.
