this place had great food. i had the filet and it was excellent. however when you get there know that if you sit on the "restaurant" side you can request a bar menu. great beer and very unique atmosphere. will definitely go back!

stunning service. a meet up group of about 15 initially that expanded to 18-19 over an hour period ate at cbw about 2 weeks ago. the food was fine. this posting is about the service.

excellent. the waitress, clearly experienced and helpful, did separate checks (not normally done), and managed the group's initial seating of about 15 to expanded to 18-19 over the next hour. this was a juggling act for her and she did it graciously -- the place was packed and very busy so for this to be so adeptly managed is testimony to a customer service focus. drink and food orders were managed without a hitch.

the beer sampler was fun -- highly recommend it.

cbw -- a great pittsburgh venue.

all-in-all, our experience at the church brew works was a good one. the atmosphere is unique and the decor provides a lot of visual stimulation. the food was delicious and the beer options plentiful.

what an awesome building! so glad it was saved! i am very picky with beer, so i don't care for the beer made here. however, the shrimp and grits and the strawberry salad are great!

no german food or traditional food on the menu. the menu was also all over the map...and not in an international fusion kind of way. too much pilsner and over cooked meat...meh maybe if the entrees weren't $22+ i'd expect less

from milwaukee with love. visiting from wi, we were glad to find this place. fantastic church setting, with the brew works on the altar.......every cheesehead's dream. had wienershnitzel off the octoberfest menu finished with capers, fried egg and anchovies.
a twist on the dish we love at maders on our home turf. good beer, good food, good atmosphere.

disappointing. food and beer were fine - we had pizza. waitress was busy but attentive. our issue was with the hostess(es) - we had 10 people, including 6 children. despite having two adjacent tables that could accomodate us, they insisted we put the children in a corner table four tables over. in addition, another two adjacent tables paid their check and left as we were being seated. although we requested, we were told there was "nothing we can do". this would have been fine if the tables didn't sit empty until after we had been served. to add further insult - the largest table sat empty until we were done. will not return.

fun place for visiting friends/family. fun atmosphere and good food. last time we were there it was the oktoberfest (food) menu.
this is the place we bring our out of town friends when they visit. actually we were just at a family gathering recently and my brother in law was asking about this place. they want to go back next time they go to a steelers game. it's unique and memorable in it's own way. keep it on your sightseeing radar.

underwhelming. my wife and i have been here twice now and we were, frankly, disappointed and underwhelmed. we went there for their valentines day specials two years ago. both meals were sub par. i got the lamb lollipops. the sauce was great but the lamb hadn't even been trimmed so all i got was fat and gristle. my wife got the pepper crusted parmesan steak and she said it was just way to peppery. at first i didn't believe her because she tends to be super sensitive to heat but i tried it and even i thought it was too much which is saying something because i love lots of pepper. definitely not worth the money which, if i remember correctly, was at least $70 before beer. speaking of the beer, i like that a lot. they have some unique brews. definitely not my favorite, but unique and well crafted.

the 2nd time we went, which was last weekend, we wanted to get some appetizers to go with our beer because we were sitting with friends and were going to be there a while. first we got the untraditional pierogie of the night which was a chicken and pork pierogie with a tomato sauce over the top of it. they were cooked well but were really really really bland. on top of that, they were $7 and you only got 4 very small pierogies. after that we got the spinach feta and gouda dip. it was delicious, but again they only gave you a small amount of dip. it was in a soup cup and was only half full so you can imagine that it didn't do much for the wife and i. keep in mind we are small people and they didn't even come close to filling us up. this appetizer was $7.75 and, again, i felt jipped. the one good food item i tried was a piece of my friend's pepperoni pizza. really good stuff from their brick oven and at $15.25 it's at a good price point for a scratch made pie. the only other thing i'd have to say is that our service was ok. they kept bringing me pints when i asked for glasses.

so, in summation:

the beer is good but not my favorite in the area
some of the food is good, some is not so good and, in general, is a little over priced.
service is average.

if you want to go to a brewery in the area, i'd recommend north country brewing in slippery rock for a less cafeteria like atmosphere and better food and beer. if you want something in the city, go to penn brewery any day over cbw.

if you think that dining in a church cannot be done, it can. if you think that beer and a house of worship don't go together, they do. where on earth does such a place exist? none other than the church brew works.  now obviously many people have dined inside a currently functioning church (i.e. a church supper), but the same can't be said about churches no longer active but whose unique features remain. i've only eaten at the church brew works once before and while it's a place i wouldn't mind dining at multiple times in the course of a year, it's much more suited for visitors due to its wow factor upon first entering off of busy liberty avenue. the building dates from the early 20th century when it operated as st. john's the baptist catholic church. the website notes that "the multi-colored glass of the rose window stands as a kaleidoscopic backdrop for the turn-of-the-century pipe organ located in the church's balcony" and "the hand-painted cypress beams on the high vaulted ceiling a
